Kevin, Thank you for the try. I wasn't quite sure where I fit into the family but it looks as though William Bell is my 5th great grandfather. William Bell's son, Josiah Bell through his daughter Mary Ann Bell who married Joseph McCown to his son James' daughter, Lillie McCown married my Samuel Bard Larkins. His son, Erwin Larkins was my grandfather. My how time flies, Your Cousin, Patrick Larkins
Kevin, I was reading your June 2nd posting of Bell data and had a question. You stated: "William Bell Jr. married a second time to the widow of Aaron Smith. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Poole, daughter of Joseph Poole......" Later you mention, "To William Bell Jr. and Mildred Poole.." Was Elizabeth also know as Mildred? I'm obtaining some info from Muhlenberg County, KY Heritage Vol #1 Dec 1978 to Vol #6 Dec 1984. Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to check for you. Patrick, Good catch, I really don't know the answer to your question. This info was copied from R.T.Martin's history of the family. He was a member of the family and some of the descendants were still alive at the time he wrote this in 1910, so he may be referring to her by the name she was commonly known as. It must have been confusing with all the Elizabeths running around. R . T. MARTIN WROTE A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SIX BELL BROTHERS, WHO CAME TO MUHLENBERG COUNTY IN 1797. ( R. T. Martin, Muhlenberg county historian, was born on Feb. 27, 1841. He was the third son of Thomas L. and Mahala (Bell) Martin. Mahala Bell was the daughter of Josiah Bell. In 1910 Mr. Martin wrote a short but very complete history of the Bell connections in Muhlenberg from which I quote: "One hundred and thirteen years ago (1797) six Bell brothers came to Kentucky from Virginia. They were William, Josiah, Samuel, Robert, Thomas, and James. James, the youngest brother, located in Louisville, Ky., where he remained several years and then returned to Virginia where he lived and died. He was born in 1778." Samuel, the third of the Bell brothers, born in 1772, located at Glasgow, Barren County, Ky., which county was organized in 1789. Samuel never married. He lived and died at Glasgow. TO MUHLENBERG William, Josiah, Robert, and Thomas Bell came to Muhlenberg County in 1797 and assisted in the organization of the county. William Bell, the oldest of the Bell brothers, born in 1768, died 1826, was one of the first magistrates of the county, and acted as one of the first associate Circuit Judges of the county. He represented the county in the Legislature in 1814. He was married in Virginia to Sarah Nighting and to this union were born and reared six boys and three girls. The boys were Samuel, who married Mary Bell, the daughter of Robert Bell. To Mary and Samuel Bell were born two sons and one daughter, John, Joseph and Mary. The family moved to Illinois where Bell died. His wife married James Smith. He died and then she married a Rev. Williams. ANSLEM BELL Anslem, a son of Judge William Bell, born in 1802, married Rebecca Robertson, daughter of David Robertson. To that union were born and reared four girls and one son, Sarah, Josephine, Cintha and Emily; David the boy died in early manhood. William Bell Jr., son of Judge Bell, born in 1807, died 1867, first married Lucy Smith, who died in 1851. She was a daughter of William Smith, and to that union was born one son, Thompson in 1834, and is now (1910) in his seventy-sixth year. He is the only living monument to represent the name of the Bell brothers in the county. They had three daughters, Sarah, Susan and Ellen. William Bell, Jr., married the second time to the widow of Aaron Smith. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Poole, daughter of Joseph Poole, who was the father of Ferdinah, Reason, Henry, Pincney and David Poole, all dead. To William Bell, Jr., and Mildred Poole was born and reared one daughter, Elizabeth, who now survives. .JESSE K. BELL Jesse K. Bell, a son of Judge William Bell, left the county when a young man and went down South. He became a steamboat captain and ran the rivers for many years from New Orleans to Louisville. James and Wylie Bell, sons of Judge Bell, Located in the western part of the state near Paducah. Wylie Bell never married. James Bell raised a family, perhaps some of them yet survive. Elizabeth Bell, daughter of Judge Bell, married Jas. Taggart, a man of prominence, once surveyor of the county. He also represented the county in the Legislature in 1838. To this union were born and reared four sons and three daughters, Liza Ann, Elvira, Elizabeth, William, James, Thomas and Jesse. William Taggart married Elizabeth Craig. James, Jr., married Anne Poole, daughter of Joseph Poole. Thomas Taggart married Mary Lee. Jesse went to Kansas. Eliza Ann married Harvey Robertson, Elvira married Henry Welborn. This Outgoing message has been scanned by Norton's Anti Virus 2005 and is virus free. Jean Wells, I certainly do appreciate this cemetery information on some of the children of David Robertson and Rachel Dennis of Muhlenberg Co. KY. I neglected to say in another message that Permelia Jane (Campbell) Roberterson-Robinson was b. 16 Sep 1804 in Muhlenberg Co. KY and died 03 Jul 1855 in or near Gonzales, Gonzales Co. Texas. Gonzales Texas is one of the oldest towns in Texas & has an active historical society, however they have no record of the death and burial of Permelia Jane Robertson-Robinson. Their historian told me most likely she was buried on the land where the family was living at that time, which was the custom of that day. James William Robertson-Robinson was b. 29 Sep 1802 in Muhlenberg Co. KY and killed by a runaway horse 30 Sep 1858 between Candlish and Berclair, then Goliad (now Bee Co.) Texas. By the time William was found they had to bury him under a large Live Oak tree at the site. I will post information about their 6 children at a later date. Again, thank all of you that have been so much help to me. This Outgoing message has been scanned by Norton's Anti Virus 2005 and is virus free. THANK YOU for these marriage dates. I wonder if the "Wesley G. Langley and Mary G. (or C.) Dennis: if this Mary could have been Mary Ann Dennis d/o Abraham Dennis & Tabitha Rice? I had Robert Bell and Margaret W. Langley in my file but no marriage date so THANKS a lot for this.............and had Jeremiah Langley so THANKS AGAIN for his wife Elizabeth Wilson of Muhlenberg Co. I don't know if Your "Robertson or Robinson married into the Shelton's" is one of our ROBERTSON-ROBINSONS or not. I don't have the Shelton name in my file, but it's sure possible. "Our ROBINSONS" were the same family as DAVID ROBERTSON and Rachel DENNIS of Muhlenberg Co. We descend from James William ROBERTSON who migrated to Texas in 1853 with his wife Permelia Jane (Campbell) d/o one of the James Campbell's of Muhlenberg Co. and Sarah (Sally) McCord. When William and 4 of his children got to Texas the name was Recorded and Used as ROBINSON ever since then. This surely made it difficult for us to find his Muhlenberg Co. family but we finally made the connection. Our family had always "Presumed" that Robert ROBERTSON (and Mary Dennis) of Muhlenberg Co. was a "BROTHER" to David ROBERTSON..............but I have no proof of this myself but would sure like to have some. We know that Mary Dennis was a sister to Rachel Dennis but we may have just jumped to the conclusion that Robert and David were brothers. I have quite a bit on the ROBERTSON families of Muhlenberg Co. but am trying to get more and get what I have documented. I would appreciate anyone with information and I'm happy to share what I have in my file and it is always open for correction. Not to James Henry Gossett that I know of, but my husband is related to Delila Underwood who was married to Benjamin Dukes on his mother's side. Joyce
It was written by Paul Camplin who was a member of the Filson Club, KY Historical Society and Past Pres of the Muhlenberg Co Art & Historical Society. Published in 1984 by Caney Station Books; Route 1, Box 1; Greenville KY 42345. I live in Ohio and bought my copy on ebay in the last couple years. I'm pretty sure the library in Greenville would have a copy. It's a really nice book. It goes town by town and gives a history of the town and names a lot of the people who lived in the towns. It also has lots of pictures. We actually found my husband's aunt and uncle (different towns - not married to each other) in the photos. Hope this helps! Joyce
thanks so much, Joyce! will check with my library to see if they can help locate one. what years are included in this book? my Clark family has many coal miners. am reading any and everything that mentions coal mining, company store, etc... trying to find as much info as possible. i have a "brickwall" John B. Clark (1848VA-1901KY). John listed as coal miner in two Rockcastle Co. KY census. John married Amelia Burton/Burden 1872 in Ohio Co. KY. this is the first sighting of John in KY. also, hoping to find where my great-aunt Ida B. Clark (Luthur) Black was living in Muhlenberg Co. KY when she gave birth to James T. Black 10/20/1912 and Naomi Black 8/28/1914. Both births are listed in Muhlenberg Co. KY. Ida and Luthur Black left Bell Co. KY after 1910 and the next time i find them, ca1920, they are in Indiana and Luthur is once again a coal miner. am hoping to find them living with a relative in Muhlenberg. the KY CD for births just has the mother's maiden name and the baby's county of birth. any help or advice is very much appreciated! charlotte JycMThomas@aol.com wrote: It was written by Paul Camplin who was a member of the Filson Club, KY Historical Society and Past Pres of the Muhlenberg Co Art & Historical Society. Perhaps this will help narrow down your search... According to Paul Camplin in "A New History of Muhlenberg County" published in 1984, in the chapter on Martwick, page 77: A small theater, usually referred to as the "opera house" (traveling troupes performed there in the beginning), was built at the back of the company store. It was managed by Albert (Ab) Mercer, the affable mine superintendent, and Guy Martin Sr. Garland Gary sold tickets and in later years Agnes Gary, Garland's daughter, pumped the player piano which accompanied the slient moves then shown. Unofrtunately, the book does not contain a photo, but perhaps this will help you to find the photo you are looking for. Good luck! Joyce Thomas Gossett
Yes, Paul Camplin's Muhlenberg County History book is at the Muhlenberg County Genealogy/Local History Library in Greenville. If they do not have copies there for sale, Mr. Camplin may have a copy left for sale.
