Thank you for the info on Baxter Alma
Alma, I checked back through the Census's. I could not find a single Baxter that came from anywhere but Muhlenburg, Ky. All the way back into the 1830 Census. It all seems to have started with John Baxter. This is the earliest property purchase. It shows 4 separate purchases. I would order this record to see if it has any of the information about where they came from. Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Hello,Does anyone know where the Baxter's in Muhlenberg were from ? Parents, siblings etc ? Thank you Alma
Most likely your line of thought is in the right direction. The probable cause was, free land. Most land grants were for a small number of acre's. However: people like Henry Rhoades and others who had fought in the Revolutionary War that were promoted to Officers from Lt. to General were granted several hundred acres of land, depending on their rank. Henry was a Capt. and his grant is said to have been about 1600 acres. At that time Muhlenberg County had not yet been established What is your comment on this subject?
I have a question: what was the attaction in the very early days to Muhlenberg Co??? Why did they come? I know that some had Rev War land grants but was there anything else that brought them all here.........to this tiny neck in the woods along the Green River? Just curious Cheryl Cessna ----- Original Message ----- From: "kyfisher" <kyfisher@BELLSOUTH.NET> To: <KYMUHLEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 16, 2006 8:23 AM Subject: [KYMUHLEN] Randolph / Nichols > This is a great list .. very helpful people here. > > I would like to connect with anyone researching John Randolph of Virginia > who went from Nelson County to South Carrollton (originally Randolph's > Landing) very early. Charlotte, Yes .. that is my John Randolph, son of John and Anne. My theory on Elizabeth Bland? is that if she is actually a Bland, she is a niece of John Bland of Nelson Co. He left a bequest to niece Nancy, an orphan of his brother. He does not name the brother. Nancy and Elizabeth could be sisters, both being nieces of John. He wouldn't have left anything to Elizabeth because she was already married to a fairly wealthy man. What is so confusing is that the Turkey Island Randolphs also married Blands, they just seem to fit together in some way. Who knows? I read somewhere that a William Randolph, b. 1670 in England, was the father of John Randolph Sr., and was brought here by William of Turkey Island. It implied that they were related in some way. Of course I have no proof that any of these theories have any validity. Thanks for the info. OH .. let me make one correction in your info below. Margaret Randolph, b. Oct. 20, 1784 m. James Nicholls (not Elizabeth) ... Prudence, who married Jesse Reno was Elizabeth Prudence. Nice to meet another Prince William Randolph Cousin ! Hi, Lettie John Randolph,1742- 1775, and known as John Randolph of Matoax, is the son of Richard Randolph (1690-1748) of Curles and Jane Bolling. Jane Bolling is a direct descendant of Pocahontas. John Randolph, b. 1742, married Frances Bland. John Randolph and Frances Bland had three sons: Richard Randolph, 1770-1796, Theodorick Randolph, 1771-1792, and John Randolph, 1773-1833. (This would be John Randolph of Roanoke, who died unmarried and without issue.) Richard Randolph was the only son to have married. He married Judith Randolph, the daughter of Thomas Mann Randolph, 1741-1793, and Anne Cary of Ampthill. They were cousins. Richard Randolph and Judith Randolph had two sons, St. George and Tudor, who both died unmarried and without issue. Theodorick Randolph, the second son of John Randolph, 1742-1775, and Frances Bland, also died unmarried and without issue. Frances Bland Randolph married St. George Tucker after the death of John Randolph in 1775. You have: "John R Randolph Ann Cary, Henrico, VA, 26 June 1742 VA. 28 October 1775" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Those are the dates of John Randolph, son of Richard Randolph and Jane Bolling. He did not marry Anne Cary. Thomas Mann Randolph married Anne Cary. (see above). "Then there is 1 Birth under Captain John: Randolph, Wood Leroy - Born: 11 February 1796 Father: Randolph , John Captain b: 16 NOV 1773 in Chesterfield Co., VA. - d. 4 FEB 1855 in Jackson Co., GA Mother: Hinton , Nancy Ann b. 15 DEC 1776 in Amelia Co., VA " ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is another Randolph line, known as the line of Joseph Randolph of Spotsylvania Co. Va. They are not related by DNA to the Turkey Island, Va. Randolph line or the Prince William Va. line, in addition to the records that we have. Joseph Randolph of Spotsylvania had a son John Randolph, known as "Capt. Jack" Randolph, and he married Nancy Hinton. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Margaret Randolph was the daughter of John Randolph Jr.(died 1822, Baton Rouge, Louisiana) and Elizabeth Bland (died 1804, Muhlenberg Co. Ky.), of the Prince William Randolph line. She is the grand-daughter of John Randolph, d. 1789, Prince William County, Virginia, and Ann Osborne. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I found a John Robert Randolph b. Abt. 1750 to1758 in Prince William County, Virginia d. 22 DEC 1822 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana born to John Randolph & Ann Osborne it shows a Margaret Randolph b. 20 OCT 1784 The mother of this Margaret is Elizabeth Bland. He too is called Captain." This is the correct information for Margaret Randolph who married James Nicholls!!!! The Randolph genealogy is very difficult and very easy to get confused; there are so many different lines, and there is a great duplication of names, even within the same family branch...plus so many of them kept marrying their cousins, etc. I belong to a private Randolph research site, which has helped me immensely in sorting them out. If you are interested in joining, please let me know and I will send you an invitation. DeAnna, Are you researching John Randolph, the son of John Randolph, who died in 1789, Prince William Co. Virginia, and Ann Osborne? Their son, John Randolph, was born 1750-52, Prince William Co. Va. and died Dec. 26, 1822, East Baton Rouge Parish, La. He married Elizabeth .......(Family tradition says she was Elizabeth Bland, who may be related to John Bland and Margaret Osborne, sister of Ann Osborne, who married John Randolph, d. 1789. She is not named in John Bland's will, though, and the reason for the question. There is no close relationship with this John Bland/Margaret Osborne and Frances Bland, daughter of Theodorick Bland, who married John Randolph, the son of Richard Randolph/Jane Bolling, and grandson of William Randolph/Mary Isham. John Bland/Margaret Osborne migrated from Prince William Co. Virginia to Nelson County, Ky. Their daughter Mary (Molly) Bland married Thomas Osborne Randolph, a brother to John Randolph, Jr., b. 1750-52, in 1790, Nelson Co. Ky. Thomas Osborne Randolph/Mary Molly Bland and family, eventually migrated to White Co. Ill. John Randolph, Jr./Elizabeth Bland(?) had four children: 1. John Randolph, III, b. abt. 1777, married 1.Polly McFarland 2. Mary Catherine Kleinpeter. 2. Prudence Randolph, b. abt. 1778, married Jesse Reno. 3. Elizabeth Randolph, b. 1784, married James Nicholls. 4. Robert Randolph, b. abt. 1782, married Polly Cross. Some of my information is from Blanche Randolph's book, "The Randolphs of Prince William County, Virginia". I descend from William Randolph, b. about 1756, the brother of John Randolph/Elizabeth Bland(?), his son, Robert Randolph, b. abt. 1786, Prince Wm. Co. Va. Sometimes Robert Randolph, son of John Randolph, Jr., and Robert Randolph, the son of William Randolph, have been confused in the genealogies. They were first cousins, and grandsons of John Randolph, d. 1789, Pr.Wm.Co Va./Ann Osborne. My Robert migrated eventually to Callaway Co. Missouri and died there in 1860. Blanche Randolph does not have any more information about your brick wall, "My brick wall has always been James Nichols ancestry, his father was James, his mother was Sarah? and some say they came from Maryland." DNA has proven that the Prince William Randolph line is not related to the Turkey Island Randolph line. (William Randolph I/Mary Isham) The earliest ancestor with proof, of the Prince William Randolph line, is John Randolph, died 1789, Prince William Co. Va. Lettie, This is my guy ... I found a John Robert Randolph b. He too is called Captain. I sure never knew that he remarried !! Where are you getting this stuff ?? This is great !! I went to the Moorman Cemetery ... Someone had apparently replaced Margaret's stone and they put James Nicholls birth date on HER stone. They both have the same date. DeAnna
Lettie, Thank you for all your effort on my behalf !!! Otto Rothert's "History of Muhlenberg County" says that my John is a cousin to John of Roanoke (very famous man) but I have never been able to find that connection. Margaret's mother is Elizabeth ? Some say Bland .. good possibility but I question the fact that they did not have a child named Bland Randolph. This was a practice that I saw regularly with the other Blands in Va. The John Bland of Nelson Co. was married to Margaret Osborne, whose sister Anne was married to a John Randolph who may have been my John's parents. ... are you starting to see a pattern here? I never saw John listed in the DAR books except the Bicentennial Edition, it does list his wife as Elizabeth Bland ... who knows? They did come to Nelson Co. with the family of John Bland, who remained here. Seems to be some connection. James Nichols parents and brother, Henry Maynard Nicholls, remained in Nelson and the homestead which was built 1790s is still here. It is now a Bed and Breakfast. John and at least one son went to Baton Rouge after his wife died. She apparently was buried on the family property and seems to be no sign of any tombstone. I have been to Baton Rouge and I think I copied all available records for him until his death there. John was a "colorful" character. It seems that he got in trouble on a fairly regular basis ... for public profanity. He just paid his fine and went on about his business until he got caught again. Thanks for everything .. but don't get bogged down with those "Randolphs of Virginia" they have been researched forwards and backwards because they were so famous. I don't think they would claim my branch of that family!!! My brick wall has always been James Nichols ancestry, his father was James, his mother was Sarah? and some say they came from Maryland. DeAnna
DeAnna, It was nice of them to replace the stone but they should have made sure it was correct first! Most of it, I find on www.Ancestry.com , I like to make good use of my account. I may start doing this for a living in a few years. I just love it! I will send you an invitation into my Web Site. I collect Genealogy information. Bibles, Photo Albums and Cemetery Photos. Mostly from the 1800's. I started out trying to find my own Families. It was frustrating! You cannot find info that is not posted. So, I started buying & posting. DeAnna, Margaret died 10 Oct 1855 and James Nicholls died 26 Feb 1847 They are buried at Moorman Cemetery, Muhlenberg Co., KY. Maraget had 3 known siblings: Elizabeth, Robert & John Elizabeth d. 1804 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. Maybe that is why they never had a Bland Nicholls. John remarried to Repsy Lamb. This was fun! I wish I could find my families that easily! DeAnna, I, too am confused! Here's more! Spouse: Birth: Death: John Randolph, Frances Bland, Henrico, Curles, VA, 29 June 1742 Roanoke, Bdfrd, VA, 28 October 1775 Frances Bland, John R Randolph, Amelia County, VA, 24 September 1752 Amelia County, Mattoax, VA, 18 January 1788 John R Randolph Ann Cary, Henrico, VA, 26 June 1742 VA. 28 October 1775 Looks very similar! John R Randolph Ann Cary married 22 September 1761 VA. However this death date would rule out this John as her father. Even though the Birth Index shows them having children in 1780, 1782 & 1784. So I can see the problem! Then there is 1 Birth under Captain John: Randolph, Wood Leroy - Born: 11 February 1796 Father: Randolph , John Captain b: 16 NOV 1773 in Chesterfield Co., VA. - d. 4 FEB 1855 in Jackson Co., GA Mother: Hinton , Nancy Ann b. 15 DEC 1776 in Amelia Co., VA They had 12 children but no Margaret. They married: Dec 18, 1793 (She cannot be the mother of Margaret.) I wonder how many wives the Captain had. (I found 2.) The good captain may have been Margaret's brother instead of Father. I found a John Robert Randolph b. This is a great list .. very helpful people here. I would like to connect with anyone researching John Randolph of Virginia who went from Nelson County to South Carrollton (originally Randolph's Landing) very early. John's brother Robert also was there early. His daughter, Margaret Randolph m. James Nicholls/Nichols in Nelson Co., 1800. The two families went almost immediately to Muhlenberg. John Randolph may have been known as "Capt. Jack" not because of his rank in the Rev. War but because he operated a boat landing and store on the Green River where people stopped to rest and did business while taking their goods to sell at Natchez & New Orleans. I found some records of him when I visited a few years ago but James and Margaret Nichols must have led a quiet life, rearing their large family on the farm and not getting involved in anything that may have led to more records regarding them. Thank you DeAnna
DeAnna, In which case you may want these. Spouse: Birth: Death: John Randolph Frances Bland Henrico, Curles, VA 29 June 1742 Roanoke, Bdfrd, VA 28 October 1775 Frances Bland John R Randolph Amelia County, VA 24 September 1752 Amelia County, Mattoax, VA 18 January 1788 However this death date would rule out this John as her father. Even though the Birth Index shows them having children in 1782 & 1784. So I can see the problem! Then there is 1 Birth under Captain John: Randolph, Wood Leroy Randolph , John Captain Hinton , Nancy Ann 11 February 1796 I'm still looking!
