My mother, Ima Dee Sargent Elam born in Blairs Mills, Morgan Co. always gave us sassafras tea in the spring to thin our blood and gave us lots of sorghum molasses in the fall to thicken it for winter. For croup it was a spoon of sugar with just a touch of corn liquor. For a chest cold it was a mustard pack (you had to be careful with this one or you would get blistered skin).
