    3. In Ella's Scrapbook there is an article about "A Mystery Murder." "About the close of the Civil War, Joe Hicumbottom came from North Carolina to visit with his sisters, Mrs. Hiram Greear and Mrs. Calvin Stamper. Joe liked the country and decided to stay for awhile, making his home with his sister, Mrs. Stamper. Not so long after Joe came to KY, his cousin, George came for a visit with him. Joe introduced him to his acquaintances....." "The Pratts had some girls with whom Joe was acquainted, and, of course took his cousin up there to meet them." Cries were heard during the night by neighbors (Amyx). A man was begging some one not to kill him. Next morning, a man could be seen crouching in the path across the creek. The Amyxs crossed over and found Joe Hicumbottom down on his knees, with both his eyes gouged out--dead. "George Hicumbottom was never seen afterwards." "The Pratts claimed that the boys left there in the best of humor, and no one else had known of any ill feeling between them. It was just another unsolved mystery". J. Monroe Gevedon, Grassy Creek, KY. Anyone have any information about this Joe or George? My ancestor, Jack Higginbotham, is not mentioned. Jack lived as an Indian in the mountains south of White Oak. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo.
