I am searching for information on the Walter M. Elam family that lived in West Liberty during the lates 1800's and early 1900's. Walter was married to Emily Johnson August 2, 1864 in Morgan County. Walter was the son of Walter Walker Elam and Eleanor Catherine Wheeler. Emily was the daughter of Elisha Johnson and Eleanor Fortner. Walter M. was born August, 1849 and Emily was born September 1, 1847 and died January 31, 1921. WalterM. and Emily had the following children: Lou Ida, Louise, Henry Clay, Ann, Green L., John H., Harlan Wesley, Nellie Jane, Barbara M., and Robert C. Walter M. and Emily divorced when Walter M. moved to Oklahoma with Emily's sister-in-law Mary Ellen Day Johnson. Mary Ellen was the daughter of Amberson and Lucinda Day. I know that Emily died in Morgan country and is buried in South Fork Cemetery near Malone in Morgan County. I would like to find more about what happend to the children in particular Robet C. Elam who I believe is my grandfather. Robert was born Ocotber 1889. He is listed in the 1900 Morgan County census with Emily. Any help or direction on any of these fammilies or their living relatives would be most appreciated. Bruce Elam
The Morgan County, KY Cemetery Records. by Joe H. Nickell, J. Wendell Nickell and Ella T. Nickell, ($25) lists Emily 9/2/1848-1/30/1921 in the SouthFork Cemetery. I don't find a Walter M. Walter associated with her. From your listing below it doesn't seem this is you Emily though. That Record shows quite a few residents of the Southfork Cemetery, but by surname and not by cemetery. The manuscript covers some 600 cemeteries in Morgan Co. It was a priceless book for my NICKELL research in Morgan Co. Look for it, and other books, on Wm. Lynn NICKELL's Web Page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymorgan/books.html Don Bruce Elam wrote: > > I am searching for information on the Walter M. Does anyone know if: Priscilla NICKELL, b.Jan 1845, m.5 Mar 1866, d.1918, wife of William E "Dr. Bill" LEWIS, b.Feb 1844, m.5 Mar 1866, d.4 Feb 1914, might be LEWIS ELLEN P age: 81 MORGAN Co. 11-20-1918 Vol:072 DC:35998 DV:1918 I found that recently in the KY DI but hesitate to "assume" that Ellen is Prescilla. Thanks, Don
Hello Bruce - we are distant cousins of sorts. You are in much luck. Do to the hard work and dedication of quite a few Elams (that I have encountered on this and other boards) there exists great documentation of the Elams of Morgan County all the way back to before 1600. Of course there are some missing persons here and there. My grandmother was Nettie Margaret Manning Elam - her mother was Laura Belle Elam. Laura Belle descends from the Walter Walker Elam line via her mother Ellen (Ellender?) Catherine Elam who seems to be the sister of your Walter M. Elam. Also, my grandfather Ulysses Grant Elam is of an adjacent Elam line that converges with the Walter Walker Elam line as a descendant of William Cannon Elam (m. Susannah Reigns/Raines) There is a significant Elam database on Rootsweb that details all this (thanks to those hardworking Elams I spoke of). If you haven't seen this database then contact me directly and I'll look up the exact URL. And, I am sure you will get other Elam respondants Also, my mother is still alive and kicking at age 85 not far from our original home in Greenup Co. My mother is one of the last living Elams of that generation. It is possible that (if you wish) I could put you in contact with her. Mom has vivid recollections of my grandmother and grandfather's stories about life and times in Grassy Creek, West Liberty, and vicinity - Malone, etc. Talk to you later "cousin" Cordially - Joe Greene ***************************** Bruce Elam wrote: > I am searching for information on the Walter M.
