My gggg grandfather John Maddox lived in Morgan County, KY. He was on the census 1830, Morgan County, KY, West Liberty TWP Roll 40, Book 1, Pg 69a-b Can anyone tell me where this is? Can anyone tell me Methodists churches in the area in this time period? John married Mahalia Gillmore on January 17, 1825 in Morgan, and I was hoping to also find it in a church record, as their daughter's obit said her mothers name was Mahalia Yost. To me this would mean she was born a Yost and married a Gillmore previously, before she married John. But I don't know this, until I find proof. Also if you know the churches, can you give me a address to contact them? I also need the address for the court house, if anyone knows it. There was also a George Maddox there in 1830, Morgan County, KY, West Liberty TWP Roll 40, Book 1,Pg 74a-b I am wondering if maybe this might not be John's father. Thanks Denise in MO
Denise in MO wrote asking about Methodist churches in Morgan Co. and the location of the courthouse: The old courthouse is on Main Street between Court Street and Prestonsburg St., I believe. Main Street is Rt. 460 as it comes in from the south (Index/Ezel/Mt. Sterling) and Rt. 7 as it comes in from the north (Wrigley, Sandy Hook, Grayson). Rt. 7 joins Rt. 460 at Prestonsburg St. where both turn east for Cottle, White Oak, and Salyersville. The County Clerks office holds marriage, wills, deeds, mortgage and estate records. I do not know what church records they might have. There are some church records on the website listed above. Hope this helps in some way. Frankie
Frankie, Thanks so much! I was following my Maddox ancestor from Missouri, back to KY, and I was having trouble finding much. The only trouble is I believe Morgan was reorganized after the 1840 census, and I may also have to look at surrounding counties. I will print your letter, and get busy! Thanks so very much!
