Below is an excerpt from a speech given by Shelby S. Elam at an Elam Family Reunion held in Florress, KY (September 1, 1951) This excerpt is in reference to the names for the Elam families - I call them "clans". Shelby S. Elam was a grandson of Jeremiah Elam of White Oak, Ky and his Great Grandfather was Walter "Waltus" Elam. He writes in his speech: "Gilbert Elam, a cousin of Grandpa Elam, settled on the Wheelrim Fork of Johnson Creek in Magoffin County. His descendants were designated as the Wheelrim Elams. Minrod, another cousin of Granpa's, settled on Caney Creek and his descendants were called the Caney Elams. Since my great-grandfather had settled on the Licking River, his descendants were dubbed the River Elams." . . . Shelby S. Elam ************************ Note: I am not sure of the reference to Magoffin Co. as it was not formed until 1860. Cordially - Joe Greene P.S. The original full speech is three typed pages. I will re-type it all into the computer sometime soon and send it to this group.
