    1. John L. LINK in 1900 census
    2. Teri Pettit
    3. I have some questions about the children listed with John L. LINK in the 1900 census of Morgan County. To give better context, I am going to list first all the census records that I have for John. You may want to skip to the "****" line, and then refer back if necessary. 1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #272: Simon Link, 42; Mary, 39; James, 17; John, 14; Lucretia, 12; Lucinda, 10; Thomas, 7; Robert, 5; Mahala, 2. Simon born Pennsylvania, all others born in Kentucky. (The next household is that of Samuel PETTIT and his second wife Rebecca Jane FOSTER.) 1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky records as family #70: John Lynk, 24; Rodah A., 29; Mary C., 4; James B., 3; Casea W., 1. All born in Ky. 1870 census of Rowan Co., KY, Pearce prec., dated 15 June, lists on p. 123, family #10: Link, John, 37, farmer; Rhoda, 38; James, 12; Cassandra, 10; Robert, 9; Nancy, 8; Simeon, 5. Also listed with the family is Andrew Brown, 26, farm laborer. All born in Kentucky. [John is not in the 1880 census of Rowan Co. He had probably returned to Morgan Co. already, but I don't have that census.] 1900 Soundex index lists in Morgan Co., Pleasant Run, E.D. 76, p. 4, line 10: John L. Link, 64, July 1835; wife Nancy, 17, Sept 1882; son David H., 12, July 1887; boarder Preston Petitt, 26, Nov 1873. All born in Kentucky. [Morgan Co. marriage records John L. Link m. Jane Alfrey 21 Aug 1895] 1910 Soundex index lists in Morgan Co., index as 062 0152 0109: John L. Link, 74; wife Nancy J., 25; son David H., 22; dau-in-law Martha J., 15. All born in Kentucky. (Note that the age for Nancy Jane is two years younger than that implied by the 1900 census. The 1882 birthdate is more believable, since she married in 1895. 13 is very young to be marrying a 59-year-old man, but it's better than 11.) ****** OK, that's the context, here are the questions about the 1900 listing: (1) Who were the parents of the boarder Preston PETITT? Where did he come from and where did he go? I have not found him in any other census years. John Link had at least one out-of-wedlock son, John Tom PETTIT born 4 Apr 1869 in Morgan Co., whose mother was John Link's unmarried neighbor, Lizzie PETTIT d/o Samuel PETTIT & Nancy SHARP. My GG Grandfather is Lizzie's older brother Preston PETTIT born 1837. I am wondering if Preston Petitt born Nov 1873 might be another illegitimate son of John Link and Lizzie Pettit, named after Lizzie's brother. But he might simply be an unrelated boarder. What might help resolve this is finding the younger Preston in the 1880 census, where he should be listed as about age 6 or 7. But I can't find him anywhere in 1880 (not even in the statewide Soundex) nor in 1910 nor the Kentucky Death Records. What happened to him? Did he perhaps go by another name? (2) Who was the mother of John LINK's son David H. LINK born July 1887? He seems too young to be a son of John's first wife Rhoda SEXTON, who would have been at least 55 in 1887, if she was still alive. (I don't know when she died.) But I don't know who John Link was married to in 1887, if anybody. Did he have another wife between Rhoda SEXTON and Nancy Jane ALFREY? David Hopkins Pettit b. 1905, son of John Link's son John Tom Pettit, may have been named after this David H. Link, who would be his half uncle. I am hoping that there may be some descendants of John LINK on this mailing list who can add to this picture. 2. Laura McKenzie
    3. Hi, a member of the Eastern KY- Hampshire Co VA Brown minilist has scanned a load of information for me. This information gives clues to the origins of the following Browns: Coleman Brown Thomas C. Brown James Brown m. Nancy Auxier Nathaniel Brown (grandfather of Nancy Auxier) Rachel Brown Friend of Floyd Co KY (b. ca 1810 Monroe Co Va) and more than likely John Brown/Catherine Borders If anyone would like the information forwarded to them, they are large file attachments. I'm not positive how they are working yet... I'm getting feedback this morning as the whether they can be read or not. If you'd like the information or if you'd like to join the collaborative effort in weeding out our Browns, please let me know. Thanks! Laura Brown McKenzie (descedant of Thomas C. Brown -twice, James Brown, Nathaniel Brown, and Rachel Brown Friend)

    2. Danny & Diane Parsons
    3. Greetings to all, I am hoping that someone out there in "Cyperland" can help me. Looking for info on a Sam Vancleve and a Lula Ferguson-Vancleve. In the 1910 Morgan County census, Panthers Branch Precinct # 233 it reads ; Vancleve,Sam M2 23 Ky Farmer Lula (married 2 yrs ) M2 23 4 ch,3 living John F. 6 Azza (Dau) 5 Corbet 1 The Azza listed here is my grandmother, Azza Havens Barnett. John F. is John Frank Havens, This two childern are by Lula Ferguson's 1st spouse, Williiam "Wiliie" B. Havens, who was the son of, William F. Havens & Hannah ( surname unknown ). And was born about 1878 and died ( i think ) in 1904. Lula Ferguson is the daughter of John C. Ferguson and Nancy Caroline Nickels, she was born March 1886. My grandmother ( Azza Havens Barnett) passed away May 31,1981 in Plymouth, Ohio......She never spoke of her mother ,Lula Ferguson, just always said that her Dad died young and she was raised by her grandparents. And, believe it or not, her children( at least the ones I have spoken to) have no idea what happened to her mother and are unsure of how her father did die. I only found out by last week that a second husband did exsist.....to say nothing of more children !! So, I am hoping that someone will read this and be able to fill in some of the blanks for me. I "think" John Frank Havens married a lady by the name of, Minnie Lacy. Thanks....... Diane Montgomery-Parsons Danny W. 2. Laura McKenzie
    3. I'm looking for B.F. Taylor b.1872 Kentucky married to Emma Savage b. 1876 Iowa (she is listed both ways in different records) The marriage record is as follows: B.F. Taylor, 24, born Ky married Emma Savage, 20, born WV on 11-17-1886 in Kanawha County. Does anyone have any B. F Taylors? (I'm guessing Benjamin Franklin). Mom remembers the family as living near the Big Sandy but thought I'd try a few places as she is pretty vague about some of her family. Any Taylor info greatly appreciated!

    3. I live in Elliott co. and I think the Kentuckian humor is terrible, all my life I have been subjected to this kind of thing in different places and when something happens in Eastern Ky that makes the news they just think it is due to the barefoot hillbillies and that we just don't know any better, but, and I am here to let all know that we live in modern times and are knowledgable people, and I think there is people in all parts of the country that some well to do people look down on, so if living in this area is what it takes to be constantly put down then Thank God I am living here because I don't think there is anywhere else in the world that I would rather be. I don't want to offend anyone but I do think this went just a bit far. Edna

    3. Col. Frank I Elam Wrote: > Dr. Rice - I am sure sorry that I offended you or >anyone else with Kentucky humor. I was born and raised in >East Kentucky as were my > parents. <Snip...Snip> I quite understand that no malice was intended. However, the very fact that those outside the Commonwealth saw more humor in the jokes than those living here, should give reason to pause. We are capable of laughing at ourselves here; in fact, in the past we laughed right along with everyone else. But, we now understand how the region has been harmed by these very unflattering jokes, ...albeit unintentionally. While others were having a laugh at our expense, our children were dealing with crippled self-esteem. So, dear friends, it's not a matter of being "serious minded" as Buck suggested, we are some of the best story tellers and liars in the world, it's a matter of characterizing an entire region in a very, very undesirable light. Perhaps you have to live here in order to understand that. Thin skinned, you say ? Perhaps, a little of that too. However, these type jokes have, undeniably, produced prejudice against this region. Folks, those of us that live here, live with those very unflattering labels. And, good folks, it's much easier to "laugh at yourself", if you don't happen to live here... My last word, ...again I apologize to the List and to the List Owner for this thread. Dr. Bill Rice Wolfe County

    1. Re: Kentuckians - can we laugh at ourselves a little?
    2. Laura McKenzie
    3. I descend from Abraham Lemaster, the emmigrant, four times, at least. I descend from Daniel Brown (progenitor of the Eastern KY Browns) 3 times and two other probably related Browns as well. I descend from Ben Hamilton three times, Edward Hill twice, William Ferguson twice. I have always thought it was neat. Since each marriage took place by at least 3rd cousins, I don't feel there's anything to be ashamed of. I thought the O.J. joke was a bit funny considering the above information. I have to say though that when I was on a list for Native Americans and they started making fun of Kentuckians, they really got it from me! But I think we should all have the ability to laugh at ourselves a little and take the jokes as they were intended. Remember the British made terrible fun of Colonials and because they were able to laugh at themselves, there was no sting to the jokes. The only joke I have ever remembered I heard from my West Virginian uncle in his kitchen when I was four (he lives outside of Louisa towards Inez). It was the one about the West Virginian who got into a terrible accident on the freeway and the state trooper asked him if he saw the yield sign. He said," I sure did officer, and I yield and yield but they still kept a comin." Considering half my family is from across the Big Sandy in WV, I don't take offense at the joke. My mom (the West Virginian) and I still laugh at it. I know Frank meant no harm so how about if we let him alone now about it. -----Original Message----- From: Frank I Elam <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, April 20, 1999 9:39 PM Subject: Re: Kentuckians - Boo ! >Dr. Rice - I am sure sorry that I offended you or anyone else with >Kentucky humor.
