    3. Jim, First off, thank you so much for responding ! We went to Morgan County today, searching for the cemetery in the Grassy Creek Area. Unfortunely, after much searching, we were unable to locate the cemetery where John C. & Nancy are buried. We did find two cemeteries, but not the correct one. Is it possible to give us more detailed directions?? We would really appreciate it. We are planning a return visit to Morgan County soon, to search some more. 2. RIGHT ON VIVIAN & RUBY - We have exchanged data over the years (forget on who). BUT, the other day a gal wrote me for info, she then put it online, she SOMEHOW had put the total information WRONG and did not know how to get it back off. So now, the WRONG info is circling around about our families. Can't win sometimes, makes you wonder if you SHOULD share. I know the excitement when you contact the direct line and are able to fill in some dates etc. It is frustrating though. I have been working on our lines since 1975, my sister began helping in 1978, so as you say, have invested lots of time and $. Glad you wrote this, maybe it will help someone?????? 2. Over the years (over 20 now) I have worked on Genealogy. I have traveled many miles, spent lots of money staying in motels, eating out and copying numerous books (ie: marriage books, birth, death, etc) and the family Histories of lots of people who were kind enough to share them with the Historical/Genealogical Societies, and have amassed a little Library with which I can help several people who need look-ups in and around Bath, Morgan, Fleming, Rowan, Bourbon, Montgomery, Menifee, Counties as most of you have as well. I have bought several Census books from people who worked very hard transcribing them from the original microfilm and was delighted to be able to buy it.......Can I now copy a bunch of them and sell them to retrieve my money? I have never sold anything to anyone. I have sent my own books around this United States for other people to copy until they are unbelievably "Ratty" but not for money. They have been taken apart so many times that one kind soul actually had some new copies and covers made for me before they sent them back ( You know who you are and you are a "Doll" for doing that) We are all trying to do the same thing....."Trace Our Lineage". I will never give you permission to sell any of my works...... and please don't even think of it. You are free to use it and free to share it. I believe they say that a "Poor Mans Patent" is the one that is put in an envelope and mailed to himself....and never opened. Until and unless someone tries to infringe on it. This might be a good thing for all of us to do just in case someone decides to write a book using your material without permission. I was excited to get my PC and just knew I would find a lot of good sharing people and most of you are "Such Dears" but.....I am really on my Soap Box over the selling of other peoples material. I apologise to the list owners if I am out of line but this is something I feel passionately over and I really do not feel I am alone in it. If you want to UN-SUB me for it I will take my punishment. The records referred to were filmed by the Kentucky Historical Society sometime during the 1950's. I believe the LDS microfilms are basically copies of the Historical Society microfilms with their own headers attached, but I could be wrong on that. I've never used the copies at the Kentucky libraries or archives. (I only get to Ky about once every other year, and spend my rare time there consulting things that aren't easily available from here in California.) I do not know when the book became incorrectly bound. It may well have been sometime in the 1800's, long before they were filmed by anybody. I simply noticed this anomaly on the microfilm that I was using. The original records are not in the counties. They were annual reports sent to the state auditor. See my page on Rowan County birth records for a more complete description: http://www.best.com/~tpettit/rowan/birth-ov.html I'm just going to send you a few entries, showing both the incorrect maiden name of mother from the jumbled pages, and the corrected maiden name by using the right continuation page. You can use them to judge whether the transcription by Richard Lyons is correct or not. (I'll include some Cassity births for Linda. :-) >From page 6, with corrections by using the same line from the right hand page that is bound with the left hand side of page 5 Line 15 29 Aug 1855 child: William H. 3. So, this mix-up only pertains to the LDS film? That would mean the book fell apart after the Morgan County microfilms were made but before the LDS made their film. Who rebound the book? If the actual books still exist in Morgan County, have they been corrected and yet again rebound or are those certain pages still in the incorrect order? 2. Hi everyone! I checked with Richard Lyons who is the one that compiled the Vital Statistics Volumes 1-5 for Morgan Co. He did not obtain his information from the LDS microfilms at all. He searched through microfilm for his information at the State of Kentucky. The vital statistics that are on the Morgan County page are directly from Mr. Lyons volumes and have nothing to do with the LDS ones Teri Pettit was referring to. I am still working on transcribing them and getting all the information online. Thanks for being patient everyone. Deanna Morgan CC

    1. mixup in 1855 birth record microfilm for Morgan Co
    2. Teri Pettit
    3. Kentucky researchers, This message is being sent to KYROOTS and to the discussion lists for Morgan Co. KY and for two of the counties which were created from parts of it after 1855, namely Rowan (1856) and Elliott (1869). If you use the LDS microfilms, and in particular film #0216,835 which contains birth, death and marriage records for Montgomery and Morgan counties, or if you utilize any transcriptions made from that film, you will want to be aware of a very serious and pervasive, but easily overlooked, error in the filmed 1855 birth records for Morgan Co. It appears that at some point the ledger became unbound, and when it was rebound the pages were inserted in the wrong order. The birth records span across both the left and right hand sides of a ledger, which is numbered only on the left hand page. The left hand page contains the date, child's name, gender, alive vs dead, place of birth, full name of father, and half of the column for maiden name of mother, usually containing only her first name. The right hand page contains the second half of the column for maiden name of mother (usually containing her surname), race, residence of parents, name of midwife or doctor, and other comments (e.g., if the mother died at birth it may be mentioned.) Except for pages 4 and 10, the left and right hand pages as filmed do NOT go together! If someone doesn't notice it, they are likely to obtain the wrong mother's name. Since all the records are written by the same clerk, and almost all of the mother's names are entered with the binding passing neatly between the first and last names, it is very easy to overlook this jumbling unless you are familiar enough with the families to notice that the maiden names are wrong. Here is the order that the pages are bound and filmed: LEFT RIGHT first half of page 1 second half of page 9 first half of page 8 second half of page 2 first half of page 3 second half of page 7 first half of page 6 second half of page 5 first half of page 4 second half of page 4 (OK) first half of page 5 second half of page 6 first half of page 7 second half of page 3 first half of page 2 second half of page 8 first half of page 9 second half of page 1 first half of page 10 second half of page 10 (OK) The identification of the right hand pages was determined in two ways: by looking for long names that cross the binding (e.g., "Bl" on the left page and "ankenship" on the right, or "Mary Elizab" on the left page and "eth" on the right), and by comparison with Morgan County marriage records. Deanna, do you think this would be worth mentioning on the page for Morgan County Vital Records? http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymorgan/mddates.htm Teri Pettit || home: 1048 Almanor Ave. Adobe Systems Inc. || Menlo Park, CA 94025 San Jose, CA 95110-2704 || (650) 326-2363 (408) 536-3086 || email: [email protected] KYGenWeb County Coordinator for Rowan Co.
