Colonial Episcopal clergy "read" for their orders, which usually meant not a university education but studying theology with a well-seasoned pastor, who then vouched for the candidate when it came time for ordination. However, to be ordained, one had to go to England--- only a Bishop could ordain a priest or deacon. The clergy in Virginia were under the auspices of the Bishop of London. So they had to go to London and present themselves for any examination that the Bishop thought suitable, & then hopefully be ordained. Ordination included a loyalty oath to the British crown.
