This is a brief summary of my interest in Montgomery County, Kentucky Around 1791, Henry Cooper and his family make the journey to Montgomery County from Berkeley County, Virginia. Henry purchases land near the Greenbrier Reservoir area south of Mt. Sterling. Apparently he and his family have some influence in this county. Rev. Howe mentions this family several times in his travels through the area. Henry was born 1760 in Virginia and died 1820 in Montgomery County, KY. Henry's father was John Adam Cooper who died May 1778 in Berkeley County, Virginia. Henry's mother was Elizabeth Strupe. The point of concern here is the change of surname either with his father or grandfather. Apparently sometime prior to 1756, the Cooper name was Keiffer/Kuffer or other spellings similar. I have not been able to isolate a particular Keiffer to link my ancestry. DNA has helped some, but the data base is still too small. I have a good data base on Henry and his children as well as his brother George who is 10 years younger (wife's name is Mary ? - ! no children). Henry Also has a sister in the area named Elizabeth who marries a Smith (2 children). Henry's children married into the Merritt, Myers, Orr, James, Walker, Motley and Weagle families, but I have yet to learn anything about the Coopers through these marriage connections. By 1850, Henry's descendants have pretty well left Montgomery County, yet some 30 years later, a descendant reappears in Montgomery County buying some land either on or near the original home place. However, again, I have not been able to learn more about Henry or his father or his grandfather from any of these individuals. If anyone ever encounters any information on this Cooper family, I would be happy to hear about it.
