That is interesting that Evan was born in Ky and died in IL. Evan would have been the same generation as my Bird Hensley. Now let me say that Bird was in Cabell County in what is now WV before I find him in Illinois. It is his wife, Nancy Webb, who is said to have been born in KY. I find Bird in a court record accepting something delivered to Solomon Hensley when he is quite young....perhaps 16...I can't get my hands on the information right now but it would have been after 1815 and before 1829. I haven't yet found any record of any of the other Cabell County Hensleys going to Illinois---but you know, I haven't looked that hard at that. And I should also add that the part of WV that the Hensleys were living in was quite close to the KY/WV border. I wonder if your Hensley is related to my gg grandmother Julia A. Hensley b 1839, parents were Evan S. Hensley b 1809 and Annis Anderson. Elijah Hensley (Evan's father) died in 1815. Evan Hensley had 10 children; Emily, John, Julia, Joseph, William, James, Isabella, Charlotte, Sarah, and Laura. Julia married Nathan Williams 1823-1880. Evan was born in KY and died in IL. Katy
Hi, Pat. I do not have anything to help you with the below. But I am on the KyMont mail list because of my Hensley and Webb family lines. My brick wall is Nancy Webb who marries Bird Hensley in Clay county, Illinois in 1829. I know that Nancy was born in Ky and is the daughter of William and Nancy WEbb. I find a marriage in 1794 between William Webb and Nancy Smith in Bourbon county. I have a gr-aunt who stated at one time that her Webb family was from Mt. Sterling. I have no reason at this time to think that the marriage is my ancestors....but I do keep looking at it as a possibility. Interestingly enough, William and Nancy Hensley name their second born, Lucinda. She is born in 1830 in Clay County, Illinois. The other piece of family lore that has been passed down is that My Hensley family was originally from Albemarle County. I suspect that when I am able to tear down my brick wall, I will find my Hensleys descended from the Hensley family I find in the early 1700's in Albemarle who then move into the area that I keep looking for a good name for: southwestern VA, southeastern KY, northeastern TN, and north western NC.....basically the area that if you place a quarter on the boundary of VA, WV and Ky now and draw around it.....well you get the idea....from there I suspect that they moved up into eastern Ky and western WV and then further west to Illinois.... Just thought that I would say hi and hope that perhaps some chatting about these people could lead to cracks in the wall for both of us...Marsha in WV Don and Pat Ward wrote: > I have Susanna Hensley, b about 1799, married Adam Vert, son of Jacob > Vert. Thank you, Marilyn... That's all I needed to know for sure. Now I guess I will have to keep researching Frederick's father, but I doubt if I find who his father was. Helen
I have the book: "Wills Ancestry in America: From England to New Jersey and Migration Throughout the United States" by Peggy Rose Wills Newkirk, 2001. The William Wills, who is the descendant of Dr. Daniel Wills, Quaker, was born about 1744 and lived part of his life in Philadelphia, PA where he was a ferryman. He died in 1790 in New Jersey. He was married to Ruth Reynolds. Their son, William Wills, Jr.was born in 1773 in Camden NJ and died in 1832 in Blanchester, Clinton Co., Ohio. William Jr. was married to Martha Jones. Dr. Daniel Wills did have a brother named William, who died in Barbados in 1671. This William mentions only two sons in his will dated October, 1671. Their names were Samuel and Micajah. I do not see the possibility of Frederick William Willis's father, William, being a direct descendant of Dr. Daniel Wills. We need to be careful not to take everything we find on the internet as truth! I have found several instances on Ancestry where people have taken my own family information and added it to their own without verification or permission. Marilyn
I have my reservations about Frederick William's father William Wills being the William, son of Daniel Wills. I am acquainted with the person who researched Daniel's family all the way back to England and she does NOT believe that these two William' are the same person. She has published a book on Daniel's line, which I have, I will find it and see what she recorded about Daniel's son William Wills, born in NJ. Marilyn
I do think it's possible but don't have hard evidence yet. I'm not an experienced researcher, but I've been told you have to have more than just a website to prove info before adding it to your final records. If however the website is accurate we've all struck gold!! There are probably dozens of researchers searching the Frederick W. Wills line that have been working on this for YEARS and have been stumped at Frederick's father. I can put you in touch with Ruth Wills she has some good strategies for the next step. Here is her website. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rwills53/td0001.htm Here is the website that claims to take Frederick back to Daniel. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~smithhouse/smithgen/smithfam/aqwg105.htm#2760 Traci On 12/28/05, Hholst44@aol.com <Hholst44@aol.com> wrote: > > Traci, > Do you think if it is possible that Frederick William Wills is descending > from Dr. Daniel Wills I? Traci, Do you think if it is possible that Frederick William Wills is descending from Dr. Daniel Wills I? I really need to know for sure. Helen
Marilyn and Anne, Here are two pages you might find interesting if you're looking for Wills info. I have some stories about Frederick William Wills. If you haven't seen them yet, let me know and I'll send you a word doc. Samuel and Margaret (Tuttle) Whitsett left Lancaster Co., PA and went to Mt. Sterling area, KY in late 1700s. Of their many children I descend from Joseph Whitsett who married Rebecca Stewart, daughter of Ezekiel Stewart. Whitsetts were Scots-Irish Presbyterians so I presume they joined that first Presbyterian Church formed in Mt. Sterling...... have no actual data, though. Ezekiel Stewart and wife, Rachel Larrison, came from NJ. After several children Joseph and Rebecca divorced...... would love to know more about what this was all about....... Soon after Joseph remarried and left for Gibson Co., IN to join a brother who had also gone there. Wonder if Rebecca resisted the idea and wanted to stay in KY with her family..... I may never know...... Can't believe how hard that pioneer life must have been on our grandmothers. Joan (Whitsett) Benton
William Lane left a will dated 23 May 1808 which was admitted to probate in Montgomery County on 5 Dec 1808. In the will, he mentions his wife, Letty L. Lane and his son, Henry Smith Lane naming both along with a friend, Benjamin Thompson as executor of his estate. He also notes bequest to "my other children". Since the son, Henry Smith Lane would probably be of age to be named as an executor then he probably would have been born about 1785-1789. According to the biography of Henry Smith Lane given at <htttp://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=L000060>, he was born 24 Feb 1811. Is this Henry Smith Lane a Junior? And is his father the Henry Smith Lane mentioned as a son of Willima Lane above? My genealogy lines have the GRIFFIN, WILLIAMS, SHULTZ, BECRAFT families from Montgomery Co. and Bath CO.
Looking for information on these families in Montgomery and Bath counties: William Hensley b. 1772 son of Joseph Hensley William Rayburn b ~ 1835 son of Seldon Rayburn and Jane Hensley William Boyd b. ~ 1810 [probably not related to all the other Bath County Boyds, unless he is a son of Spencer Boyd Sr.] James Wade son of Dawson Wade William Frame Allen Jackson Pat Boyd Ward North Carolina
I have Susanna Hensley, b about 1799, married Adam Vert, son of Jacob Vert. However, I don't have much on them. In 1859, Susan Virt etc, is named as defendant in a court case in Montgomery County over a piece of land that probably belonged to William Hensley b ~1772 d 1855 Montgomery Co KY. This William Hensley was the son of Joseph Hensley of VA and Montgomery CO KY. I have had to use deeds and court records to come up with William's children, but I believe them to be Susannah b. ~1799, Lucinda b. ~ 1806, Jane b. ~1809, Jackson C b. ~1817, and Milton b. 1824. James Harvey Hensley b. ~1820 may have been one of his children, and there were probably more, as court records mention 7 heirs in 1855. I don't know where my information that Susannah Hensley married Adam Vert came from. The Verts lived near Joseph Hensley in Montgomery County, as shown by early censuses. Apparently, Adam Vert died in Rush Co Indiana about 1845. Susannah is shown living with probable children in Indiana in 1850 and 1860, and in Kansas in 1880, but I don't have a list of her children. Do you have any more information on Susannah Hensley? I would love to find out more. Pat Ward North Carolina ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vickie A. Full information is a good idea and shame on me for not thinking about it! I wanted to respond before I forgot again after going through my mailbox. I am looking for information on Jonathan Wells purported to be born 1791, Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Cy, KY. He married Mary "Polly" Jones about 1813 place unknown currently. He is my brick wall and nothing more is known of him. Thanks! Jean in RI
