    1. Tax Lists 1813-1818 - 1810 census

    3. Does anybody have access to - or a printed copy of - the tax lists for Montgomery Co. from 1813-1818? I found my Josiah Bryant on the tax list in 1803, 1810 and 1812 but the film I was looking at only went through 1812. In 1818 Josiah is in Floyd Co. I would like to know if he is on any of the other tax lists in Montgomery Co. I would also like to know if Gabriel Bryant appears on the tax lists during that time (1813-1818). Gabriel is Josiah's son and they are both on the 1820 census in Floyd Co. Josiah is on the 1810 census in Montgomery Co. but there are two children listed with him I cannot identify. On the 1810 tax list it shows two male adults living in Josiah's residence. I can't identify the other adult either. The tax list was made in April. Does anybody know what the enumeration date was for the census? Thanks, Marsha DeepRoots@sisna.com

    3. Lee: I'll get the group sheets in the mail in the next day or two. I've never seen any evidence of a twin sister for Thamer or Tamer. I think both names refer to same person. I had contact with a Smith family member at one time, but no longer hear from him, but it was not Allen T Smith. Madison Stevens is the proper name as I saw it in several deeds in Walker Co, TX. Mary Zelo Zasco has had her name butchered all to pieces at one time or another. Family legend has it this was name of a Russian entertainer that they took a liking to and gave the name to their daughter. Andrew J Stevens did go by the name of Jack. I have seen the transcription of old William Calk's diary and would like to have a copy of your book. Thanks. Paul Dafft

    3. Hi Paul - You wrote on the Montgomery Co, KY List: >Lee - Elizabeth Stevens married Eward T Freeman 4 Oct 1809 in Madison Co, >KY and I do have the info on all 10 of their children. They moved to >Greene Co, AL, Noxubee Co, MS, Union Psh, La and then to Sevier (now >Little River) Co, AR, where they died. Their dau Sophia is my Great >Grandmother. Elizabeth Calk Stevens apparently died in Greene Co, AL and >old Thomas then came to Shelby Co, TN and from there went to Texas in >1834 where he died about 1842.Send me your snail mail address and I will >send you some group sheets. I use an old family tree program and can't >foward it. I could probably read your data, but maybe not. Anyway, my address is below. >Tamer Stevens, born 18 Jun 1798, Madison Co, KY, died 24 Sep 1853, Walker >Co, TX Tamer apparently had a twin sister. I have no further information on her although I suspect she may have died young since she is not noted on other lists of Thomas & Elizabeth's children. This is according to information I got from Allen T. Smith of El Paso, TX in July 1994. He is the G-GS of Tamer and was born in 1919. I have had no further contact with him, so I do not know if he is still living there. >Madison V Stevens, born c1808 KY, died c1845 Walker Co, TX I believe I have him as Matthew instead of Madison. This also according to Allen Smith. He show no other information than the name. >Mary Zelo Zasko Stevens, born 11 Aug 1811 Montg Co, KY, died 26 Apr 1894, >Walker Co, TX Allen Smith has her third name as Zarco instead of Zasko. Obviously one is wrong -- probably a mis-reading of a hand-written entry. The name appears to be of easter European origin and what little I know of those names leads me to think Zasko would be the correct spelling. >Joseph B Stevens, born 3 Apr 1813, died c1889 Little River Co., AR By process of elimination, I believe this is who Allen Smith has as Jack. Joseph is probably from the Steven's side as the name does not appear in Elizabeth's ancestry -- either Calk or Catlett. Again I suspect a misreading somewhere, and since his brother Andrew's middle name is Jackson, my guess is that Allen's data is in error here. >Andrew Jackson Stevens, born c1817 KY, died c1876 Grimes Co, TX Considering the above comments in relation to Joseph, would Andrew's nickname have been Jack? Thanks for the data, it fills in a lot of holes. I'll be glad to get anything further you may have. If I can help in any way, let me know. Incidentally, I just published for our local Montgomery County Historical Society a small book that contains various document about the county and has a transcription of William Calk's Journal of his travels in 1775 from Virginia to Montgomery County. The Society is using this as a part of its fund-raising for its museum project. If you like, I can get a copy for you. 2. Bob, Thanks for your speedy response and family info. I find that I don't seem to have anything in my files on the Strange/Payne family at this time. I've researched many counties and branches over the years. I'm almost certain that if you look into Harrison Co., In (Corydon) you will find more on the Strange family in the early 1800's. Good luck in your research. Mike

I do not know who William Whitehead Payne's father was. I know they moved to Kentucky from Viriginia when he was about 4 years old. My great grandfather (Willis Franklin) moved to Mt. Pulaski, IL area after the civil war, married and raised his family in that are. I have also been in contact with Francis Payne, whose great grandfather was Moses Payne (married Sarah Ann Buckles), another of the siblings of Louisa and Willis Franklin. Mary Payne Barringer

    1. Re: [KYMONTGO-L] Payne's late 1700's early 1800's
    2. Hi Mike, I don't have much of anything on the Payne line, as yet, since it is a small branch of my Strange family line, but here is what I have: Stephen Strange, Sr. (b. Bet. 1760 - 1769 in Halifax Co., Virginia; d. 17 May 1817 in Montgomery Co., Kentucky) married Anna Crook (b. Abt. 1770 in Virginia Colony; d. 11 Aug 1830 in Hendricks Co., Indiana {where I live now} on 11 Jan 1791 in Madison Co.,Virginia (now Kentucky). They had nine children (Mary Polly Strange, William Strange, John Strange, Sr., Absolom Strange, Edward Strange, Hezekiah Strange, Elizabeth Crook Strange, Sarah "Sallie" Strange and Thomas Strange). Mary Polly Strange (b. 11 Oct 1791 in Montgomery Co., Kentucky; d. unknown in Hendricks Co., Indiana) married Thomas Hardwick, Jr. (b. Abt. 1775 in Virginia Colony; d. Bet. 1847 - 1848 in Hadley, Hendricks Co., Indiana) on Abt. 1808 in Montgomery Co., Kentucky. They had at least four children (Anne Hardwick, John Wesley Hardwick, James Hardwick and Lucinda Hardwick). Anne Hardwick (b. 03 Mar 1809; d. 28 Jun 1853) married Simeon Rice Payne. They had at least two children (Sarah Jane Payne and Mary Ann Payne). I'm afraid that is all I have on the Payne family. As you can see, they are way out on a small branch from my main Strange family line, so I haven't chased down their info as yet. I don't have any birth dates or places for any of them. Wish I could have been of more help. Bob in Indiana In a message dated 8/25/2006 8:29:55 A.M. 2. I have a Simeon Rice Payne (b. early 1800s) and his daughters, Sarah Jane and Mary Ann. My connection is slight, by way of his wife, Anne Hardwick (b. March 3, 1809; d. June 28, 1853). I probably don't have much to help anyone with. My main connection is the Strange family.
