I have a letter written to her % of John Turley in Mt Sterling. I would appreciate any help or information. Thank you in advance for any help. Charlotte I have researched some of the Payne family ca. 1800- 1900. This group passed from PA. thru OH to KY, back to OH and KY to IN in the late 1790's to early 1820's. I don't recognize the two women you reference but would love to know if they may be connected to my Payne line. Can you tell me what the date of the letter you mentioned was? If you have any further info on these women and their history I would love to see if there may be a connection. Thanks Mike

    3. My GG grandfather John Charles DeForrest was born 1830 in Louisville, KY. I believe he was orphaned at an early age. Census records say his father was born in PA. I was able to find one and only one DeForest in KY for the 1830 census. William DeForest. He was also listed in the Louisville City Directory of 1832. Steamboat pilot. Dangerous. "Peruvian" exploded in 1833 killing all crew and passengers. The William DeForest family included 5 daughters in 1830 and they show up in Mt. Sterling, KY for the 1840 census. Mary DeForest was head of the household. Does your book include any references to DeForests? Thanks for your help. 3. Thank you for your reply Lee. I was afraid that would be the answer but I had to give it a shot. My 4G-gf, Josiah Bryant, was supposed to have been a millwright. He lived in Montgomery Co. but did not own any land. We've been trying to figure out how he made a living and whose land he was living on. He's on the 1810 census there, as well as the 1803, 1810 and 1812 tax lists. He seems to have been a poor man and has been quite a challenge for us to research. A good question, but I do not know of any comprehensive county history. A number of state or regional histories have various information on the counties, but I don't think any record anything about millwrights. Lacking a county history, we tend to fall back to Carl B Boyd, Jr and Hazel Mason Boyd, "A History of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, 1792-1918" (Mt. Sterling, Kentucky: Carl B. Boyd, Jr., 1984). Boy say that there are no firm records of mills in Mt. Sterling (and we would assume the nearby county area) before 1869. Then they continue by noting four mills in the town and their history from immediately after the Civil War. Boyd does not note who the millwright, but even that is not likely to help you since they would be far removed from you 1810-1820 timeframe. I do know of a mill (from 1780) operating in what would currently be Bath County known as Gill's Mill. It was located on the Licking River at what was later called Cogswell. The location is now under the waters of Cave Run Lake near the Twin Known Recreation Area. I do not know who built it although my 3G-GF purchased it in 1783 and expanded it considerably. It was primarily for lumber although it did other milling including flour, etc. Hope this helps - Lee Hoffman/KY TMG Tips: <http://www.tmgtips.com> My website: <http://www.tmgtips.com/lhoffman> A user of the best genealogy program, The Master Genealogist (TMG)

    3. I am forwarding this to people that I think might be interested. I know that some of you are out of state, but you may know people in Kentucky with similar interests. I know that we all receive e-mails that are hoaxes. Since I received this from a person at the Kentucky Heritage Council, I trust it and ask that you send it to as many people as you think will be interested. Thank you in advance, Edie Suttle, jsattle9@fuse.net We Need Your Help to Create a License Plate for Kentucky that Acknowledges Historic Preservation in the Commonwealth! Several preservation minded folks have formed a group to promote the creation of a Kentucky special issue license plate that focuses on historic preservation in Kentucky. Other states (i.e. Georgia http://www.gashpo.org/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=327) have already created such plates and it serves not only as a way to promote awareness of historic preservation in Kentucky but also to generate funds to promote historic preservation in all of its forms on a statewide level. Nine hundred (900) potential applicants are needed to show a perceived interest and to allow for the creation of such a plate. (KRS 200 SB 157) At this point we simply would like the name(s) of those interested as well as mailing addresses to generate an interest list. At a later date we will provide those on the list with the appropriate application. This basic information can be sent to eric.ky.plp@gmail.com <mailto:eric.ky.plp@gmail.com> and will not be made publicly available. If you know of other individuals or groups that are interested please forward this e-mail along. Through this process and this group we hope to generate and show interest in the cause and also develop and choose a final design that will be used to show (through your license plate) that historic preservation is an important issue in Kentucky and is truly important to a wide variety of people. Please join the e-mail based group Kentucky Preservation License Plates by sending an e-mail to subscribe-kyplp@googlegroups.com <mailto:subscribe-kyplp@googlegroups.com> and look forward to future e-mails describing what exactly you can do to have a say in this process. 3. On the 1900 census for Montgomery County Kentucky Dist 4 there is a listing for Stephen Burgess wife Nancy J and daughter Louisa b Nov 1878 and son-in-law John T Smith b 1869. I believe this daughter Louisa was listed as Mary in previous census records. Possibly her name was Mary Louise. Am looking for John T. and Louisa in later census but can not find them. Of course Smith like looking for needle in haystack. Does anyone have any information on John T. and who he married lists his birth as March 1869. Thanks JoAnn

They had both attended a revival in Lexington. The year was sometime in the late 1830's or 1831. (This info. is from Notes by David Miles Vandeman, on the Biography of Jeremiah Vandeman in Vol.23S page #154 &155 of the Draper Manuscripts).
