They have a big memorial in the front of the cemetery to honor all the boys who died in that area but back where his family was buried was a Tombstone for him and on the Tombstone was his serial number. ~ Janeen Davis Proctor ~

    3. Jeannie, On the subject of Immigration and passenger lists, you may need to know this: The microfilm index file of passenger lists of vessels arriving in New York between 1820 and 1897, does not include all records available on the film of ship manifests. I was searching at NARA for my great grandfather's arrival in 1871 but his vessel (the Bark Gauss from Bremen, arr. NYC 30 Dec 1871) was not listed. Had he not been a Pollack from Prussia, listed in the "Germans to America" books, I would have had to go through the rolls one by one. My search included arrivals in Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia as well as New York. These are the NARA numbers for the microfilms. Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels arriving at [Baltimore (1832-1866, City Lists), M326; (1832-1866, Federal Lists), M327], [Philadelphia (1808-1906), M360], [Boston (1848-1891), M265]. Passenger lists themselves: [New York (1820-1897 Unindexed), M237], [New York (Indexed) T275 & M1464] I think, [Baltimore, (1820-1891), M255]. Chuck

    3. The New York City passenger lists have been filmed for these time periods: Soundex for alien passenger arrivals from 7/1/1902 to 6/30/1948 Soundex to passenger arrivals, 1944-1948 Contrary to what nearly all of us have been told, the passenger list information was not initiated at the port of entry, but was paper-work done at the port they sailed from in Europe. It's a myth, by and large, that officials at Ellis Island changed spellings and/or names. Seems it would be possible also to go for the naturalization records which would give tremendous information in this time period. I've pasted the following information from the Immigration and Naturalization Service web page: Naturalization Certificate Files (C-Files) INS naturalization certificate files, known as C-Files, include a duplicate copy of all naturalization records dated after September 26, 1906. All C-Files contain at least a copy of the Declaration of Intention (184k) to become a US Citizen (to 1952), Petition for Naturalization (279k), and Certificate of Naturalization (223k). Occasional files contain additional documents or correspondence. C-Files include all US naturalizations from all States and Territories, and from all courts (Federal, State, and local). INS maintains an index to the C-Files, and can retrieve individual records based on name, date of birth, and place of birth. C-Files from 1906 to 1956 have been microfilmed, and are available via Freedom of Information/Privacy Act request to INS Headquarters in Washington, D.C. For naturalization records after 1956, Freedom of Information requests should be sent to the appropriate INS District Office.

    3. http://www.ishaah.com/Wall.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sunday, May 27, 2001 WASHINGTON - President Bush urged Americans on Saturday to take a moment this Memorial Day weekend to "appreciate the price that was paid for our own lives" by those who serve in the nation's armed forces. In his weekly radio address, taped before he went to Camp David, Md., for the weekend, Bush said he would mark Memorial Day by holding a White House breakfast Monday for military veterans "who knew and remember the people who never came back from our nation's wars." "We are in their debt, more than a lifetime of Memorial Days could ever repay," Bush said. "In the end, all we can do is be thankful. All we can do is remember and always appreciate the price that was paid for our own lives and our own freedom." The president, who served in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, referred fleetingly to the military service of his father, a Navy aviator during World War II. "Most of us know war veterans; I had the privilege of being raised by one," Bush said. "Usually, they are reticent about their experiences. It is often difficult for them to think back on those names and faces, on the ones who never lived to be called veterans. But on Memorial Day, we accept our obligation to do just that." He called on Americans to "remember the heroism, the hardship, the national gain and personal loss" of war. Presidents, he said, have made the decisions in the White House, but the success - or failure - of those decisions rested on the shoulders of the men and women who fought those wars. "America has been given so much, but of all our assets, resources and strengths, none have counted for more than the courage of young soldiers in the face of battle," Bush said. "Victory has always come down to the people flying the planes, manning the ships, carrying the gun and the pack. ... They have defended us. They have died for us. They have never disappointed us." After Monday's breakfast, Bush plans to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery before flying to Mesa, Ariz., for another Memorial Day ceremony.

He was born ca. 1866/67 in Harrison Co., Ky., 5th known child of Andrew Jackson & Elizabeth (Craig) Hicks. He is only one of two brothers who was known to have left Harrison Co., Ky. before his mother's death. He was last known to be living July 6, 1916, the date of death of his half-brother, and he was said to have been living at Mt. Sterling, Ky. on that date. Brothers of Doctor/Richard were: Edward Wyatt(e), Alvin, Absalom, Hugh G., Jacob, and Clark B./P. Hicks. No known sisters. I look forward to hearing any tips, information, etc. Thanks. You must be a direct and only descendent to get the information for WWII which is still not released because of the Privacy Act. MOst of the info for WWI can be released if there is any. In my case, both for my brother Straka and father Straka I got the following information: "The record needed to answer your inquiry is not in our files. If the record were here on July 12, 1973, it would have been in the area that suffered the most damage in the fire on that date and may have been destroyed." The inforation used for the attached NA FORM 13038, Certification of Military Service, was obtained from an alternate source. This will serve as verification of military service and may be used for any official purposes. However, complete records cannot be reconstructed. (I wanted such things as medals and battlefield commissions, etc. which they both had many of.) Apparently, I will never find out anything about them. The address in St. Louis , MO is 9700 Page Avenue, and it must be presented on the National Archived Form 13045.
