    1. [KYMONTGO-L] Children of RW Veteran John McCullough
    2. I am requesting assistance in documenting the lineage between George W. McCullough, b. approx 1802 in Montgomery County KY and RW Veteran John McCullough, b 1-1755 in PA. I need a credible source to show the father-son relationship between John McCullough and George Mc, b 1802. John McCullough came directly to KY from the RW after the war ended, most probably with his brother, James. John McCullough was on the tax rolls for four counties in KY for about a 20 year period. The last year he is on record is 1818. I believe he came to live in Ripley County, IN with his family. Thank you for any help you can give me. Alan McCullough

Machpelah Cemetery is owned and operated by Watson Lodge #32, International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). During to 1960s, the records of the lodge (including the cemetery) were completely destroyed when the lodge building burned. Some of those records have been reconstructed to allow continued operation of the cemetery, but most data has been lost forever. The reconstruction does include a plat map of the older side of the cemetery indicating the owners of the various plots (but no record of who is buried in those plots unless they were single grave plots). There have been efforts to completely document the cemetery. The largest of these efforts was that by Mrs. Hazel M. Boyd who compiled the information. Other have done smaller parts of Machpelah and have published their efforts on the Internet. Mrs. Boyd died recently and her records were left to the Montgomery County Historical Society (which I believe has placed a copy in the local library as noted above). Also I believe a copy (maybe only partial) of her cemetery project is in the Library of the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort. 3. Dear Mary, Although I am very partial to Jeanne's UFO theory :-) I know about family disappearing in Montgomery county! I'd be happy to snoop around a bit for you. Do you have any of Thelma Dunn's Montgomery county books? I have several, but what I really need are the tax books or the actual marriage bonds. What place names do you have associated with your Coopers? There are about 20-25 Coopers buried in Machpelah cemetery in Mt. Sterling, but unfortunately the records for Machpelah were destroyed in a fire. I can certainly scan the pages with Coopers & send them on to you. Also, have you checked the US GenWeb sites for the western counties of Virginia? I've had family that went from Scott Co. VA to Lee Co. VA to someplace in Tennessee, & from there to Montgomery Co KY. Why--- I have no idea. Also, do you have any deeds associated with the Coopers. When I finally got over my fear of courthouses, I found that Mt. Sterling has a wonderfully easy alphabetical directory to deeds, which led to copies of the actual deeds, which were full of juicy information! Let me know-- if you know-- specifically what info you'd like--- tax records, marriage bond info, whatever. If I can get my hands on it I'll be happy to scan it for you. 2. There was also one of Samuel's sons who was Samuel Varner Whitsett, Jr. who may have been the one belonging to your information. That son lived until 1840. Thanks. Joan (Whitsett) Benton

    2. Thank you for the great tips.........I believe Samuel and Margaret were members of the St. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Mt. Sterling, KY. That is one of the few tidbits of info I have about them. Of course, I believe they might have been members of different churches at different times........? The info about buying land is very probable. I am going to copy the e-mail you sent and keep it with my files... maybe someday more pieces of the puzzle will fit together. Thank you very much. 3. Joan (Whitesett) Benton, The Lulbegrud Baptist Church Records have quite a bit of information on my wife's family (Griffin, Treadway, Coons, etc). The church records begin about 1793 and have info (with gaps) past 1845. The Samuel Whitesett who bought land (see below) from John Treadway and Elizabeth Griffin may be your Samuel Whitesett. The fact that the land was sold for just 5 1/2 shillings indicates some family relationship--usually. John Treadway and Elizabeth Griffin are my wife's direct ancestors. The LDS has the Lulbegrud Baptist Church records on film (I believe the film number is 183,193--you can easily check this on the LDS Family Search Library online). Also: Montgomery Co, Kentucky --County Court Deeds: v 4-5, 1806-1812 LDS Film # 252,349 ---7 August 1804 v. 4, page 229-230 Indenture between John Treadway and Elizabeth his wife, and Samuel Whitesett, dated 7 August 1804. John Treadway and Elizabeth his wife sold the land to Samuel Whitsett for 5 shillings. The 22 1/2 acres of land was located on the waters of Lulbegrud Creek, Montgomery Co, KY. Let me know if this is of interest to you. Sincerely, Ron Grabyan [email protected] wrote: > I am descended from Samuel Varner Whitsett who either bought or "staked out" > land on Lulbegrud Creek in 1786. 2. I am descended from Samuel Varner Whitsett who either bought or "staked out" land on Lulbegrud Creek in 1786. I understand that he lived with his family in that area until his death in 1815. He didn't actually move from there, but the name of the area kept changing due to counties being formed from other counties as the state became more populated. Thus records sometimes list him as in Bourbon, Clark, or Montgomery Counties. I have a detailed family tree from him to the present family members in my line, but I don't know very much about the family or the area in those times. I would appreciate any clues as to how to find out what their life was like then. Thanks. Joan (Whitsett) Benton

    3. Alas, my elusive kinsman You've led me quite a chase I thought I'd found your courthouse But the Yankees burned the place. You always kept your bags packed Although you had no fame, and Just for the fun of it Twice you changed your name. You never owed any man, or At least I found no bills In spite of eleven offspring You never left a will. They say our name's from Europe Came state side on a ship Either they lost the passenger list Or granddad gave them the slip. I'm the only one looking Another searcher I can't find I pray (maybe that's his fathers name) As I go out of my mind. They said you had a headstone In a shady plot I've been there twenty times, and Can't even find the lot. You never wrote a letter Your Bible we can't find It's probably in some attic Out of sight and out of mind. You first married a .....Jackson And just to set the tone The other four were Sarahs And everyone a Jones. You cost me two fortunes One of which I did not have My wife, my house and Fido God, how I miss that yellow lab. But somewhere you slipped up, Ole Boy, Somewhere you left a track And if I don't find you this year Well...... Next year I'll be back!
