    2. Comment on Deism, which was mentioned, with a question mark.......... I believe that Deism was a sort of vague belief in a God who "spun the world into existence," and then left it to follow the naturalistic laws that He put in place. Many of the founding fathers of our country had this sort of belief. Belief in something like this without confidence in the Bible's record of human history and a God who is interacting with humans would be grounds for denying membership in a conservative Christian church. That is my take on why that person was not allowed membership in the Lulbegrud Baptist Church. Joan Benton

    2. One further item regarding the DeWitt family. I'm a little more alert this morning and have just noticed a Maysey DeWitt on the membership list from the early days. There is a notation beside her name, "Dec'd", but there is no date. Perhaps this will be of further help to Vickie. Tom Haddow

    2. The minutes of the Lulbegrud Church for Saturday, November 3, 1793, state that Peter DeWitt was that day received into membership " ... by Experience & Baptism." There are gaps in continuity in my copies made from the LDS microfilm, but several pages later, under the date of September 16, no year stated, I find, " ... Peter Dewitt excluded for openly professing Deism(?), denying the scriptures ..." At that point, my page breaks and continues at some later date without further explanation. Vickie may very well want to view the LDS microfilm himself for a possibly more complete version of events. Meanwhile, Vickie, I have it in my Treadway database that Moses Treadway, on July 9, 1794, in Clark County, Kentucky, was married to a Catherine DeWitt, daughter of Peter DeWitt and Jane Bray. This Moses would have been the son of John Treadway, Sr., an original member of the Lulbegrud Church, who died in his 90's in Montgomery County, Ky. I would be interested in hearing what you may know of her and her family. There appears to be some contradictory information in the book, History of the Tredway Family, in that several descendants of a Moses Treadway state that he was married to a Mary DeWitt in 1790 in what was to become Montgomery County. It could be that the one Moses married two sisters, or they could all be entirely unrelated. However, I would welcome your input. Tom Haddow

    1. [KYMONTGO-L] COCKRELL
    2. I am new to the list and researching the COCKRELL family that lived near Mount Sterling. My cousins and I are planning on meeting there in mid May and researching the family. I received some information yesterday that indicated some of the family were buried in the Spratt Cemetery on the farm of Bennie Turkey, Camargo Road. Does anyone know exactly where this is? Also, would be interested in hearing from anyone connected with this family. Other names connected are SPLAWN, TIPTON, SPRATT, CALMES, ANDERSON, OLDHAM and REDMON. Thanks Ardelle in Colorado

    2. Family records state that my ancestors, Samuel Whitsett (also sometimes listed as Whitesides) and his wife, Margaret, were members of the St. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Mt. Sterling, KY. I also believe that Samuel's older relative, William, was a circuit rider based in that church. I am not clear whether or not William was Samuel's older brother or not, but he was definitely a close relative. I am just starting to learn about Montgomery Co., KY. If anyone knows about the history of that church, I would love to hear details. Joan Benton

    2. I believe presbyters are the elders of the church. The Presbyterian churches have a board of ruling elders that are in charge. If the church was just beginning, several leaders, or presbyters were probably in charge. They may not have called a minister yet. Joan Benton [email protected]

    3. Ok...we now know the people in the Lulbegrud Baptist Church...does anyone know the members of the St. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Mt. Sterling and the Presbyterian Spring Creek Church.? My Coopers supported Rev. Howe (a Presbyterian) and I feel they must have belonged to one of these two Churches after Rev. Howe left the area. Any takers on the membership??? Mary Rigdon

    3. Sharlene, Jacob Coons (b 1740, Culpeper Co, VA; d 22 Sep 1807, Montgomery Co, KY) and his wife, Elizabeth Hanback are my wife's direct ancestors. Elizabeth died in Oct 1793. Jacob remarried in 1793-1794 to Letitia Kemper (1762-1845). This Jacob's children were: with Elizabeth Hanback: Mary Coons (b 1766) James Coons (b 1768-1771) John Coons (b 9 May 1773) Phoebe Coons (b abt 1775) Martin Coons (b 1779) Elizabeth Coons Anne Coons with Letitia Kemper: Jacob Coons (b abt 1794) Nancy Coons (b aft 1796) Henry Coons (b 1797) Joseph Coons (b abt 1800) Church records from the Lulbegrud Baptist Church seem to identify Jacob Coons and wife Letitia as members in 1993-1994. I do not know who the Nancy Coons is who is also on the list. A Jacob Coons is also identified as representing the Mt. Sterling Baptist Church in 1804 at the Northern Kentucky United Baptist Church Association Meeting. 3. Sharlene, A presbyter is a minister or elder of the Presbyterian Church. Presbyterianism takes its name from the system of church government under which it operates. Presbyters are representatives of the body of believers, and as such act as judication and spiritual overseers. 3. Unfortunately the Kentucky census for 1800 was destroyed. You'll have to go by the Montgomery Co tax lists. Many libraries have them on microfilm. Ancestry.com uses the 1800 tax list in lieu of the census for KY. It does show a John Myers on the 1800 tax list for Montgomery Co. If you check each year after 1800 in a library, you could probably pinpoint the year John moved to Nicholas Co.
