Good Morning Robbin and Welcome! I monitor this list because I descend from Jeremiah SEE who is believed to have been born in Montgomery Co. KY and I am always looking for family. I also have family in Gallatin Co KY and Switzerland Co IN and there was a lot of "crossing over" the county lines and rivers. I have met a number of very nice people and have even been able to assist a few. Looking forward to working with you. Nancy English Heil Researching in the area: ANDREWS, ENGLISH, LAND, SCOTT, SEE and many related lines.
Marcia, I find the Nikell (Nichol) surname in my tree by marriage to my grandmother's sister in Switzerland County IN which is not too far from Montgomery Co., KY. You might try looking there. Good morning everyone! It's time for an introduction as Jeannie has graciously allowed me to take over the Montgomery Co. KY list. I hope you will feel free to take the time to introduce yourself as well! I've had little time to turn my attention to my new list, as I travel during the week with my job. I've been researching my ancestors since 1990, traveling to many courthouses, libraries, cemeteries, etc. in those years to see the "source" records. The smell and feel of those old books when they are opened is just a part of being a family historian. Nothing like it! I enjoy the challenge of that "brick wall" and am thrilled with a small amount of information (a piece of my puzzle) to go forward with. I have been married 30 years and have three kids (2 in college - 1 taking flying lessons). There are currently 165 list members on the Montgomery Co. KY list. With that many people, we should be able to have some lively discussions on the families that lived in the Montgomery Co KY area from the time Kentucky was a state of VA to the present. Perhaps if each person would list their oldest ancestors who lived in the county, that would spark interest and discussion. Remember to give dates, locations, and as much info as you can on those dearly deceased ancestors. I hope each of you will be active participants and not just lurk in the background. One very important item is that I will not tolerate FLAMING by any method. "Flamers" will be immediately removed from the list and will not be allowed to subscribe again. Should there be a problem on the list, please contact me by private e-mail immediately. My e-mail address will appear in the tagline of many posts to the list. Occassionally I will post a question or request to generate conversation. I look forward to getting to know each of you. Let's get started with an informational roll call. (Not just a surname listing). Have a wonderful day of research! Robbin Harrison [email protected]
I am searching for Joseph Nickell. He was born in Augusta Co., Virginia, lived in Greenbrier Co., Va/WVa. and died in Montgomery Co., Ky ca. 1829. He reportedly served in Lord Dunmore's war under James Henderson, and participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant. I am searching for documentation on this. I am also searching for his gravesite. Any information will be greatly appreciated!!! Marcia Helton

Hello I'm looking for any information on the NEAL residents in Mount Sterling. Particularly Marshall Neal, my great grandfather. He died in 1957 but there are likely more of his relatives there. His wife's maiden name was Stanley.
I tried to contact [email protected] and all I got was mindspring. Should the .com be on his name? Or is that his email address without the .com? I am eager to order some death certificates. Thanks.....Carol

WASHDAY Years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe for washing clothes. It appears below just as it was written, and despite the spelling, has a bit of philosophy. This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrap book (with spelling errors and all). 1. Bilt fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. 2. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. 3. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in bilin water. 4. Sort things, make 3 piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags. 5. To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water. 6. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and then bile. Rub colored don't bile, just rinch and starch. 7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rinch, and starch. 8. Hang old rags on fence. 9. Spread tea towels on grass. 10. Pore rinch water in flower bed. 11. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. 12. Turn tubs upside down. 13. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings. * Paste this over your washer and dryer

In the early 1960s, the late Mrs. Hazel Boyd compiled a listing of all known cemeteries and graveyards in Montgomery County and the known graves in each. That listing was never published although a few copies are available. The original copy is maintained by her family, but a copy of it and her other papers are in the hands of the Montgomery County Historical Society which will do lookup and make copies of anything found for essentially the cost of the copies and postage/handling plus a small donation. The only other copy of which I know about is the one in the Library of the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort. I think this is a complete copy, but it may not be. Does anyone know if books exist with graveyard records in Montgomery county in 1840-1850? I know my family lived there...Stephen and Polly Senters/Senter/Centers. She is alive in 1844 per deed info, and not on the 1850 census. In 1850, it is just Stephen and son Brittain age 13. Thanks, Marilyn
