Randy, Phil and others, You are really making me ENVIOUS! Don't forget for those who do have access to a computer, Randy has sent many records, picutres, etc, and they are now scanned and posted in the Job(e) albums. These can be printed out quite easily. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ajobebrown/jobe.html For any who haven't checked this site lately - look at the above link and UNDER Randy's picture. And I've got my fingers crossed for the Jobe to be accepted. Dorcas Jobe, at Mulkey, is my DIRECT ANCESTOR! Randy, Maybe we can meet up at Dovie's for a burger and some heartburn afterward. Phil Hmm, think I'm gonna go defrost the last two I have in my freezer from my last trip home. Shirley, There aren't alot of pre-1850 records available. The major extant record group is the Tax Lists for the period of 1820 to 1850 (and beyond). These are fairly complete with only a few years missing. Following this are the land grants. I believe these start in the late 1820's and continue to the 1900's. Many are unindexed while others are missing the index or have only part of it remaining. These are located in the County Court Clerk's Office. Some deeds were re-recorded after the first fire and are found interspersed among the deed books. You're best bet here is to start with volume one of The General Cross Index to Deeds. One of the Deputy Clerks in the office should be able to help you find it. There are a very small number of marriages from the early 1830's to the early 1840's. The original book these were contained in has been lost but Dayton Birdwell made a typescript copy which can be found in both the Clerk's Office and in the Library. These marriages were performed by William Howard and are mainly of individuals who lived in the south western part of the county. The Harlan Memorial Library is open Monday through Saturday. As I recall it opens around 9:00 am and closes at 4:30 pm with the exception of Monday when it closes at 8:00 pm and Saturday at noon. For a small library it has quite a nice collection of microfilm, including all known back issues of the Tompkinsville News, and local family histories as well as reference books for many surrounding counties and states. The last time I was there they did not have a working microfilm printer so bring plenty of paper just in case. The local LDS also has a library but I don't know what the hours are and what the scope of there collection is outside of film available from the FHL. Hope this helps, Phil P.S. Just in case you search later marriage record be aware that Marriage Register #1 and #2 and Minister's Returns 1910-1914 record the actual date of the marriage. The date given in the Marriage Books (actually bond and license books) is for the bond not the marriage. Around 1914 the Marriage Returns started being recorded in the actual marriage book as opposed to a separate volume. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2003 4:28 PM Subject: [KYMONROE] Researching in Monroe > What all is available on Monroe websites now? What all is available on Monroe websites now? I am very new on this list and am glad to see that the old tax lists and Old Mulkey memberships are online now. Also, I am planning a research trip to Monroe next week. This Monroe visit came up very suddenly, and the only time I can go is during spring break next week. Could anybody please tell me what kinds of pre-1850 county records have been reconstructed at the courthouse. I was there many years ago when I didn't know to ask about things like reconstructed deeds, and the people at the courthouse did not volunteer any information in that regard. I understand the only marriage and death records available are for broken periods after 1852. Could somebody also please tell me where the genealogy library is, and what their hours are. I really appreciate any help anybody can give me. Trying to track my Malone family from Monroe back to South Carolina is my brick wall. Thanks, Shirley Malone Fritsche
Hello Sandy, In case no one answered your question, here is the link for the KYgenweb site. Half way down the page in the middle you will see the links for the Old Mulkey membership lists. http://geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4335/Monroeco/monroe.html
Do any of you have a list of the original members of the old Mulky meeting house??>.Thanks Sandy Wainwright

Hello again Phil, There is also a Pioneer Banquet on Friday, April 25. I believe at the First Baptist Church in Tompkinsville. At this banquet, the festival organizers are going to recognize some of the pioneer families of Monroe County. These families had to be nominated by someone who could prove the family was in Monroe County before 1820 and that they have a significant number of descendants still living in the county and the surrounding area. Selection of families will be made by the Monroe County Heritage Committee. The deadline has passed though as it was March 3. I was unaware of it until last Friday and managed to get six families in before the deadline. I only had time to submit the 1820 census records for another eight families including our England family. Regretfully our Fords came about twenty years too late. I sent the Ford information to you about a year ago. And yes your emails were going out to the list. <g> Sorry you are unable to make it. I am going to try as it sounds very nice. The DAR and SAR are both attending. I was told that both Tenn and KY SAR and also some National Officers will be present. Without knowing, I assume it is because of the Revolutionary War graves/memorials at Old Mulkey. Gary
Here is some more information that was passed on to me recently. I have just heard that some type of genealogy/history conference is planned for a Saturday in April at Old Mulkey Meeting House State Shrine. I don't have many details but a "sunrise breakfast" is planned and the NSSAR will be doing demonstrations/reenactments. I have a couple of queries out and will post the full details when I recieve them. Phil
It isn't very easy to sort out the Hagans in early Monroe(Barren) County. To help with this task, I have copied Hagans from the Barren Co tax lists (1799-1819) and the Monroe Co tax lists (1820-1840). If you have some interest in Hagans, this may be useful. You can see these tax records at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/files/hagan/HaganTax.txt Doug Moore -- |==================================================================| | J.Douglas Moore Mathematics.. http://math.la.asu.edu/~moore | | [email protected] Genealogy.... http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore | |==================================================================| | Math Department Office: (480)965-3720 HOME: | | Arizona St. U. If, you have not already heard the news, the Kentucky Historical Society is again looking for a new director. As a member of the historical society, and a patron who spends several hours at the facility each week, I'm concerned with the direction the society seems to be taking. A couple of years ago the historical society moved into a new facility which ranks at the top or very near the top of the finest research facilities in the country. Unfortunately, since the move to the new building it appears as though our membership has dropped! In the time that I have been using the library, never once have I seen any mention of the Kentucky Historical Society, its library, or the many services that are provided in ANY of the genealogical magazines that I have and do continue to subscribe too. I have attended conferences, and seminars outside the state in which we should at the very least be represented by a speaker! It seems for whatever reason we are a very well kept secret! Interest in our society needs to be revived! It seems as though the time has come for a director who wants the society to grow and expand. I for one would like to see not only the first floor of the library stack area filled with books, but also the addition of a second floor! The last director was brought in from out of state, which to me doesn't make a lot of sense. It is time that the director of the historical society is a Kentuckian, with knowledge of the history of the state, a vast knowledge of the genealogical holdings within the state, the ability to understand the needs of genealogical, and historical researchers, and the ability to work with our state legislature for the benefit of the society. I wish to nominate Mr. Ron D. Bryant as the new director of the Kentucky Historical Society. Ron D. Bryant not only has seventeen years of experience with the library, is a ninth generation Kentuckian, but is also extremely knowledgeable of the history and genealogical holdings in Kentucky. He is a noted librarian and lecturer on Kentucky, having written over eighty articles, and is the author of Kentucky History - An Annotated Bibliography published in 2000. If Ron D. Bryant becomes director of the historical society, he has stated that he will continue to help patrons with their research in the library. He believes that the director needs to be aware of the patrons needs, and that we must increase our membership. As I mentioned above, I wish to nominate Ron D. Bryant for this position, but I can't do so with your help. If, you agree with me, please send letters to the following gentlemen advising them to name Ron D. Bryant Director of the Kentucky Historical Society: Selection Committee c/o Mr. Walter Baker 917 S. Green Street Glasgow, KY 42141-2086 Selection Committee c/o Mr. Richard L. Taylor 335 Holt Lane Frankfort, KY 40601 Selection Committee c/o Mr. Thomas D. Clark 175 Kentucky Ave. Lexington, KY 40502 Many thanks for your help. Shelby A. Williams

I have a book titled -Poems and Addresses- by Manlius T. Flippin published in 1892. I bought it because Flippin was the main speaker at several Union Soldiers reunions in Tompkinsville and Fountain Run in Monroe County, KY during the 1880s and his speeches were published in this book. In the book is - Address Of Welcome, Delivered At The Re-union Of The 9th Kentucky, Volunteers, Infantry, At Fountain Run, September 18, 1885. One paragraph on page 188: Soldiers of the Ninth, there are many memories of the long, weary marches, of lonely nights when the earth was your bed, and the sky your covering - memories of battle-scenes and tragedies, that are engraved on your minds above the tidemark of the Lethean wave. You will not, you cannot forget them. Perhaps some of you saw the gallant HAGAN fall at Adairville, or SHORT, or FULKS at Kennesaw Mountain. Possibly some of you saw PIPKIN or FAULKNER or WALKER or PITCOCK stricken down at Shiloh. There may be some comrade here today, who bore the dying of HOLLAND, STAR or MAYHEW from the hard-fought field of Pickett's Mills. Some of you may have seen DIXON or BUCHANNAN fall at Chickamauga. Perhaps some of you bore the dead or dying body of BRAY or TOOLEY or ENGLAND or BORDEN or JENKINS or MURPHY to the rear, when the lightning flashed and the thunder rolled over the awful field of Stone River. This website will give you more information about the above listed names: http://home.okstate.edu/homepages.nsf/toc/9th.htm Manlius T. Flippin is always listed as one of the most prominent Monroe Countians. He was born July 29, 1841 near the forks of Indian Creek in Monroe County, KY. He was a lawyer, a representative to the Kentucky House of General Assembly, Monroe County Judge, Surveyor of the County, published poems, and was an eloquent speaker. He is listed in the History Of Kentucky, 1886.
