    1. Monroe Co School Census
    2. Doug Moore
    3. Since there is no existing 1890 census, the school census for the late 1800s is an important substitute database for that census. I have spent a lot of time at my local LDS Family History Center reading the Monroe Co school census on microfilm and wishing that someone would transcribe it for me. A transcription now exists. Dayton Birdwell and Shelta Shrum have prepared a book containing Monroe Co, KY, school census records from the 1880s and 1890s along with some other material from that time period. 1. Geralds in Monroe Co
    2. Doug Moore
    3. There are some surnames that we study diligently, while other surnames tend to filter into the mix little by little over a period of time. The Fitzgerald line keeps finding its way into my database, and I now have quite a lot on the Mudlick (Monroe Co) Fitzgeralds. There is another Fitzgerald clan that originated in the Center Point area. As far as I can tell they have different origins. The Fitzgeralds have for the most part modified their name to Geralds (Gerald, Gearlds, etc) through the years and some families seemed to have switched back and forth during the 1800s in Monroe Co. It is not always clear which is the best version to use for a given individual. The progenitors of the Mudlick clan were 3 siblings from Washington Co, TN, whose father was a George Fitzgeralds, about whom I know nothing. They were 1. Mary Jane Geralds 2. Akin Geralds 3. William "Randolph" Gerald (often called Rudy) Mary Jane Geralds married Mahlon Jones in Washington Co, TN, and they came to Monroe Co around 1822. Akin Geralds married Jane P Colley and they came to Monroe Co about 1835. Rudy Gerald married Molly Hunt, went to Sullivan Co, TN, for a while and then to Monroe Co in the 1850s. I have printed out a descendancy chart for this line and it can be viewed at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/files/fitzgerald/geralds.txt If you are interested in the Geralds of Monroe County, then you may wish to comment upon or make corrections to this data. 1. Re: [KYMONROE] William G. Martin
    2. To the person who wrote me about the Martin, Lewis and Newman families, I thank you so very much. You didn't list a name so I don't know who to address. This Mary S. Lewis is the right age to have married my Martin. the son, William G. Martin, lists his father as Doc Martin on his marriage certificate and I don't know if this is a nickname or an occupation. William's death certificate is difficult to read but the name of his father looks like "Fenord". Someone on the list suggested in might be Nimrod and I've searched for Leonard also. William G. Martin was a widower at 27 when he married Nora Eaton so I'm trying to find who the first wife was and where it took place. Another marriage certificate might reveal more about his father. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it so much. You've given me new hope! Lynn

    2. Wayne Benton
    3. Lynn, my grandfather was a Lewis. The Lewis, Martin, and Newman families of Monroe county were related thru several marriages. If this helps, I have a Rebecca Newman bn. abt. 1824 marrying an unknown Lewis and having two daughters with him. Jane Lewis bn. abt. 1852 and Mary Lewis bn. abt. 1855. In the 1860 census, Rebecca Lewis and her two daughters are living with Rebecca's brother, John Newman. Rebecca's husband, unknown Lewis, is not listed and I have presumed is dead. In the 1870 census Mary S. Lewis age 15 is still living with her uncle John Newman along with her cousin Mary Newman Martin, age 23, who has married a James Martin, age 26. If this Mary S. Lewis, age 15, is the Mary you are looking for, it would probably tie-in with her marrying a Martin also. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, June 05, 2006 8:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [KYMONROE] William G. 2. I don't know if this will help much or not, but I found a WWI Draft Registration Card for a Will Martin, born 3/6/1888, age 29, that was registered in Barren County, KY. On this he states that he was born in Allen County, KY and that he was married. Then on the 1920 Barren County, KY Census (ED# 21, District 2, Tracy, Page 5B, Household 115) there is the following: William G. MARTIN, head, age 31, KY,KY,KY Nora E., wife, age 19, KY,KY,KY William H., son, age 1 9/12, KY,KY,KY Vera M., daughter, age 0/12, KY,KY,KY I've looked on the 1900 Census in both Allen and Barren County, KY and have not been able to find any Martin that would match his name and birth date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a message dated 6/6/2006 10:00:16 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: X-Message: #1 Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2006 21:11:35 EDT From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: William G. 3. Hello, I am seeking information on Elizabeth Bailey b.1788 in S.C. who married a Porter. She died in Monroe Co. Ky. Feb.17,1877. She can be found on the 1870 census living with Isaac and Nancy Sprouls. Wondering if Thomas B. Porter is her husband? If not he, who is? Is Nancy Sprouls her daughter? Thanks for any help. 3. Thank you Doug. I am looking for the burial of Grace McMillin Bailey, and Ellen McMillin Bailey. Grace would be wife of William Bailey, b. 1794 S.C.son of William and Elizabeth Robertson Bailey. Recently proven thru death certicates obtained on their son William Jackson Bailey, born in Monroe county in 1833. Grace was not in the Kansas territory with William and his boys in 1855 or after, he was in Platte Co. Mo. in 1846 and is buried in Hudespeth Cemetery in Rushville, Buchanan County Mo. But Grace is not there. Ellen McMillin Bailey would be the first wife of John P. Bailey b. 1804 in S.C., son of Martin and Susannah Bailey. He has a proven son named Newton and Milton. Ellen McMillin came back as mother on death certificate of Milton. She died prior to 1838, when he married Barthena Bailey a cousin. WE know they somehow come from Daniel McMillins line, but do not know who. We suspect that Grace's mother is Grace McMillin listed on 1820 census of Monroe County, but do not know who her husband might have been. If anyone has any info. we would love it. If anyone could tell us where we might look to find them we would appreciate. Thanks in Advance Jeanette Bailey Independence, Mo.

    1. VA to KY PATH
    2. Hi Susie; I have a wonderful map that was in the back of a book "Master Index Virginia Survey and Land Grants 1774-1791" pub. by the Kentucky Historical Society in 1976. The map is entitled: "The Great Settlement Area" and covers the land grants in the publication. The map shows a migration from Wadkin's Ferry on the Potomac River; down the Wilderness Rd. between the Shenanoah Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains to Staunton, VA and then (still on the Wilderness Rd.) to Cumberland Gap and then into KY. and all the way up to Crab Orchard and the Ohio River. The map shows the locations of the forts along the routes (very important) and the waterways and settlements and stations along the route. I'm sure that this was the route taken by my Campbell's who migrated from Amherst and Augusta Counties of VA. This has been a invaluable book for me in my research, and most libraries have a copy or you can request one with a library loan. Hopefully, the map is still in the pocket of the book inside the back cover, as it is separate from the printed book. Phyllis Pengilly in CA

    3. Looking for any information or someone that is researching a Obediah Vaughan that was listed in the 1820 Monroe County, Ky Census. He should have been born about 1795 to 1804. More then likely his father was a Obediah Vaughn that show's up in the 1810 Barren County, Ky Census. Also looking for a possible family connection to a Celia Wood that was born in 1793 in this same Ky area. She would have married a John D Vaughan around 1808-1810 by the birth of their first child being born around 1811 in Smith - Macon County TN area. Thanks and Good Luck on all your family searches!!! 3. For Monroe County, KY reasearchers: My Belcher and Biggers ancestors in Monroe County arrived there is 1816 with a group of others from Franklin County, VA. They may also have lived in Patrick County, VA, where their marriage was recorded. My gggrandfather, John Belcher inlisted in the War of 1812 at the Rocky Mount courthouse in Franklin County. I got this information by writing to the Military Archives for his service record from the War of 1812. There were several papers in his file, including his widow's application for a pension after his death. On this application, she listed the date of their arrival in Monroe County. I believe they came to Monroe County as a result of his militia service where he earned a land warrent as payment. Much of Ky was made available for those who held land warrents for service in the Rev. War and also in the War of 1812. 2. My ancestor, Abraham Hiestand, moved to Frederick (now Page) County, in 1743. About 1765, he moved to Washington County, TennesseeHe then moved to Jefferson (now Cocke) County, Tennessee and was a member of Big Pigeon Baptist Church. He then moved to Kentucky about 1798, first to Green County, and by 1800 was in Barren (now Monroe) County, Kentucky, where he joined his friend, John Mulkey and the Mill Creek Baptist Church. I found that a number of families in the Big Pigeon Baptist Church migrated to what is now Monroe County and became members of John Mulkey's church. John Mulkey is also an ancestor, but his family moved to Tennessee from South Carolina. I hope this helps.
