    1. Early churches of Mercer County?
    2. Would anyone know which were the early churches of Mercer County? Was there another local church before the New Providence Church? Was the beginning of the New Providence church about 1822/23? Would there have been a type of church on the McGee property? When did the Hopewell church begin? The Unity Church? Searching for a church the McGee families and others in that Salt River and Chaplain creek area may have attended in the early 1800's, before the New Providence Church.. Judy Smith/Colorado

    3. New Providence is one of, if not the oldest church in Mercer and was established in 1784-5. This was the church founded by the McAfees and McGees (Mrs. McGee and Mrs. McAfee were sisters) and these two families were among the first to settle Mercer Co (then Lincoln Co). The Chaplin River is far away from this area - perhaps a day's ride by horseback. The original McGee House is still standing, so it is very easy to find their land. Travel north on US 127 from Harrodsburg about 6 miles to the Jackson Pike, turn left onto Jackson Pike - travel a few miles - the old McGee property is on right side of Jackson Pike, both sides of the present railroad and on both sides of the salt river. The portion which has the old stone house passed out of the McGee family long ago, but the section before the railroad - was owned by the McGee descendants until just a few years ago. The old house has 3 foot thick fieldstone walls, huge sold cherry beams, two stories - The DAR erected a large plaque at the home. gjsmith58@comcast.net wrote: >Would anyone know which were the early churches of Mercer County?
