    2. To get married in the earlier period of the colonies and United States, the principles who wanted to get married were required to post a bond to ensure the marriage took plage. I know in Tennessee, it was $1250.00 and later $1500.00. If the marriage took place the bond was returned. If the marriage did not take place the bond was forfeit. Quite often, relatives would pay the bond and give consent to the marriage. Most of the Mercer Co., KY marriage records have been either filmed or available on book from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
