This information is from the New England Historical and Genealogical Society eNews Vol. 7, No. 21 Whole #220 May 25, 2005 NHPRC Funding in Danger of Elimination The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is the grant-making arm of the National Archives and Records Administration. Through the course of four decades, the Commission has awarded $153 million to thousands of archives, colleges and universities, and individuals to preserve and publish important historical records that document non-Federal American history. President Bush’s budget recommends that all grant funding and staff support for NHPRC be eliminated in the next fiscal year. Such an event would vastly decrease the preservation, let alone the availability, of records for genealogical research. For more information on how this will impact genealogists, and how you can help, visit the FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee at http://www.fgs.org/rpa/formalactions.htm. More details can also be found on a website developed to dissemination information specifically on this issue at http://www.savearchives.org.
