I may be visiting Mercer County Monday, May 23. (Or I will be going to Bath County... unfortunately, I will only have time for one place, so I have to choose.) I am specifically searching for the Wingate family. Elizabeth Wingate married Joseph Divine/Devine. I have perused through everything the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana has on Mercer County. I am thinking that the best thing I can do while there is to actually go to the court house and look through land records and other court stuff. I notice that the historical society is closed on Monday, so I know I can't visit there. Are the land records at the court house? Does anyone know what else may be available there? Any suggestions welcome as to where to go or what to look through. I will not have a great deal of time, perhaps only about 4 hours. We will be returning home from Resaca, Georgia after demonstrating at the Resaca CW reenactment and driving a large pick up truck and hauling a trailer. Does anyone have suggestions as to where to park. Sometimes that can be pretty hairy with such a large outfit as we will be driving. We're leaving for Georgia early Thurs. morning, so any emails after that will not get to me in time. :\ Thanks in advance.
