Jim, There is a Jim who has Wesley White. Jim's William Wihte m. Lucy Cundiff in Bedford Co. VA. The Whites were in Pulask Co. KY and likely in Mercer and Lincoln. Wesley was originally a minister. He removed to Boone Co. IN. For whatever reason, Wesley became a bell maker. Maybe some can look very closely at those early censuses--and later ones that list occupations. This may help by narrowing in on the counties you mentioned. Shari

Surnames: Hall, Banta, Fallis, Pherigo, House Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gBB.2ACI/3374 Message Board Post: Since at least 1900, our family has cherished an old cast brass or bronze sheep bell, said to have been made by someone of our ancestors, and the assumption has been made the it had somehow come through our Banta family, but we can't seem to find any indicator that any Bantas did this sort of sandcasting. Some of our family names from Kentucky are Hall, Banta, Fallis, Pherigo, and House, and we have had connections in Mercer, Bourbon, Franklin, and Shelby Counties in Kentucky, and Jefferson County Indiana. Does anyone know of someone making cast bronze or brass sheep bells during the 19th Century in Kentucky or Indiana? We're on a fishing expediation here, and would appreciate any assistance in solving this old family anecdote. Jim Patrick tambaymar@aol.com tambaymar@aol.com

I am seeking info on Thomas Shannon. He was in Casey and Mercer Co. abt. 1810-1820. Thomas appears in estate papers for George White, d. 17 Feb 1824, Casey Co. KY. Apparently, Thomas took over the Executor duties of Thomas Hutchings/Hutchison as Thomas Shannon takes care of settling estate. Am trying to find relationship to George White--which they may have only been friends. Thanks, Shari
27 July 2005 Dear cousins, In spite of the high gas prices, some of the airlines have big, wonderful flight sales going on. We already have almost 70 cousins signed up for our Gathering of Dutch Cousins in Harrodsburg KY September 23-25. If you have not signed up yet because you thought you could not afford the airfare, take a look. Southwest Airlines specials flying from Phoenix or OKC into Louisville KY. Senior fare, non-stop, is $129 each way, Phoenix to Louisville. Leave Phoenix (PHX) 8:45 am arrive Louisville (SDF) 3:15 pm, (2 or 3 time changes) Only $106 for OKC, the return trip is only two hours! (one time change) The fares from some other cities to Louisville are even cheaper. We may decide to fly and cut two days driving each way off our travel time. Wanted to let ya'll know. Louisville is only 72 miles from Harrodsburg. The roads are great (more than halfway on Interstate), the views are fantastic, and it is only an hour 45 minutes, so you could fly into L'ville, rent a car and be there in no time at all! Frankfort (34 miles) and Lexington (32 miles) are both also close and have good airports. While making that quick drive you could think about how long it took our Dutch ancestors to make the same journey. Remember in the late 1700s and early 1800s, most of our people started overland in wagons, on foot and horseback from Conewago in Pennsylvania to around Wheeling (now WVA) where they tore down their wagons and turned them into flatboats which they loaded with all their household goods, farm animals and families. They waited for the spring rains to raise the river, then pushed their flatboats onto the water and away they went, headed for their "new Amsterdam" in Kain-tuck territory, then still part of Virginia. It was not just a leisurely picnic on a houseboat, they had to worry about Indian attack and the dangers of river travel, such as submerged trees that could wreck their boat. In Vince Akers book, "The Low Dutch Company," page 13 tells about the Westerfield migration in 1785, when the party was fired on by Indians near the Indiana shore. Several animals were wounded and James Westerfield received a bullet in the abdomen. He recovered and they reached "the falls of the Ohio" near present day Louisville. They tore down the flatboats and rebuilt the wagons to haul their goods to the Mercer County Dutch Station. On the way they encountered another Indian attack and James Westerfield Jr, was killed. Pretty peaceful journey now! No danger from submerged trees or Indian attack now. Come and hear more of our family's exciting history at the Gathering of Dutch Cousins. Items to Bring: Family Pictures and/or Antiquity Piece with story. Registration is only $20 for the 3 day event. Need more info or a new registration blank, send an email to Buffalo234@cox.net. Other flights, $29 - $119 one-way, 3-day advance purchase in select markets. For more info, go to Southwest.com For other airlines, check priceline.com, expedia.com or lowestfare.com. Diedre, I have Pg. 123 of Gaines Tax list for Casey Co. KY, 1814. There was a Lindsey Wright. Don't know if he might fit in with your Obadiah somewhere. There was also an Averilla WRITE. Several pages of documents I received from Harrodsburg-Mercer Historical Research Library shows different spelling variations for same people. One time they will show has Hutchings, the next as Hutchison--or Hewenton then Howenton/Howerton. Casey formed from Lincoln Co. abt. end of 1806, and Mercer formed. Lindsey shows as the only person (whites over 21) and had one horse. Total value was $30.00. Ha, this is funny. The column for Total value has this: (except stud horses, jack asses and billiard tables). Had no idea they had billiard tables in 1814!! Shari

Don't forget our Dutch Cousins reunion to be in Harrodsburg KY September 23-25, 2005. Deadline for the discounted registration is just a few days away – so if you have been procrastinating, better send it in quick. We now have 250 names and addresses in our Dutch Cousins database, including 118 on the email list. A colony of Low Dutch settlers – 50 families in all – first came to Mercer County KY in 1781 from Conewago Colony in Pennsylvania. Banta, Bergen, Bodine, Brewer, Demaree, Dorland, Duree, Cosart, Cozine, Monfort, Rider, Shuck, Smock, Terhune, VanArsdale, Van Nuys, Voris, Vorhees, Westervelt/Westerfield are some of the surnames associated with the Kentucky Low Dutch Settlers. Our group adopted the term “Low Dutch” to distinguish themselves as being from the low countries of Holland and Europe instead of Germany. Plan to bring your whole family – aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren, cousins, and all — to stay at least three days Friday September 23 through Sunday the 25th. You won’t want to miss a minute of what we have planned for you. Please register as soon as possible to be admitted to all the special events. Registration is only $15 each if mailed before July 15th, and $5 for spouse or companion. For more info email Buffalo234@aol.com.
