I was just re-reading your note and you certainly have given us a lot of information here. I didn't realize how much information until I just re-read it. With this information we can maybe find them on some of the census, and the Rev. War info sites. Hmm. You said that they made a movie about the Newton Boys. Do you know if that was the name of the movie? or? I would like to see it if it is in the rental stores. :) Thanks.. Annie (and my sissy) Barb

    1. Re: Shaker Records? Jacob and Lydia Kulp, 1840-1880 era
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SHAKER RECORDS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gBB.2ACI/3401.1 Message Board Post: I will try to answer your question on Shaker records as I am also interested in the religious sect. My direct ancestors were among the first to join when the group formed in 1805...of the first five family names, four were my family lines and two of the four were my direct lines. It is virtually impossible to obtain original records for Pleasant Hill as many were destroyed either on purpose or accidentally, not knowing the importance of the journals. However, these places have some of those found intact and are available for the public to view. Filson Historical Society in Louisville, KY has the largest collection of the original journals....33 in all. They are kept in the manuscript dept at the Filson and they are quite strict in letting them be viewed. I have read all 33 over the last few years and they are a wonder to read. The earlier journals have exquisite handwriting and one is purported to have been kept by my gtgtgt grandfather, though only cirumstantial evidence and gut feelings by the curator of Pleasant Hill and myself, tell us, Francis Montfort did keep it. The Filson has a website.... www.filsonhistorical.org, think that is it. The Harrodsburg Historical Society in Harrodsburg, KY, county seat of Mercer County, where the Shaker village is located, has perhaps 11 original journals and they are available on microfilm at several places in KY...the Filson, Harrodsburg Historical Society, among others.... I am not sure if they are available for purchase however. They have also made copies of the journals and have put the originals in storage. U of KY has Shaker records on microfilm from the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio....some refer to Pleasant Hill, but not many. Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, has a collection but most refer to the Eastern Shakers with very little on the societies in KY> Western Kentucky University at Bowling Green, KY has in their archives records of the Shakers in Logan County at South Union....and they do have their journals on microfilm. You might contact the archives dept at the WKY library for information. I bought a copy several years ago and it was about 35.00 at that time. It does have some info from Pleasant Hill, but most of it refers to the South Union Shakers. The director of the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, in Mercer County, KY also has some journals, but have not had the chance or time to sit and read them. MS Larrie Curry is the director and may be able to help you with information on your family. Her email address is found at the website for Pleasant Hill. Those are the main sources of information and if there are any other journals out there, they are in private collections and no one knows of them. There is a book written by Marc Rhorer, which I don't think is in print any longer, but a copy can be found at the Filson and the KY History Center in Frankfort, KY, that I am aware of....plus a copy I have in my collection. I have found your names in it with the following.... Abner Kulp b. 7/1/1830 MontgomeryCO, PA, arrived at PH on 5/21/1838 John Kulp b. 5/31/1837 Bucks Co, PA, arrived PH on 5/21/1838 and absconded on 5/11/1862 Lydia Kulp b. 8/18/1808 Montgomery Co, PA arrived at PH on 5/21/1808 Thomas Kulp b. 12/24/1834 Montgomery Co, PA arrived at PH on 5/21/1808 and absconded 9/17/1855 The information is taken from original journals and are subject to error as I was cautioned by MS Curry. In my case, a date is in error on one of my ancestral lines and I had other means to disprove it....sometimes it was a typo error and a reading of the original journal gives you the correct information. I have a large collection of books on the Shakers..currently doing an inventory and am at 50 plus and still countin. If I can help any more than this, please let me know. I will tell you that you are on a wonderful mission if you are studying the Shakers....fascinating society. As I said my own family were the Bantas and Monforts who went to the Shakers in 1805 and were part of the Low Dutch Colony that went to KY in 1780. Pleasant Hill is the largest restored Shaker village in the U.S. with over 33 buildings restored to date. Most have rooms for staying overnight and I highly recommend it....it is the most tranquil place I have ever been, the nights are so quiet and peaceful....the land surrounding the village is absolutely beautiful. The rooms are restored with Shaker style furniture, comfortable and clean. I had the pleasure of staying in the East House where my gtgtgt grandfather lived his last 19 years and was buried from there in 1867 after being a Shaker for over 60 years. If you go for a visit, be sure to take in the program in the Meeting House where they sing the old hymns of the Shakers...it will send chills up your back, I guarantee. In the fall they stage a Shaker funeral, very moving experience. I attended last fall and it was like I was following my gtgtgt grandfathers casket to the cemetery and paying my own respects. If I can answer any questions on the Shakers, fire away....I am not an expert, but have about 15 years experience researching the Shakers and give talks locally about the Shakers to various historical groups. If I don't know the answer, I can check in my own book collection and see if that helps. Would like to hear from you....perhaps I can be of more help than this. Barbara Whiteside bobbeo60@yahoo.com PS I am answering this on ancestry where you had your posting so others may also know the answer, but have sent you an email, hopefully, to your address listed. I've got a plan so cunning, put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

Spencer. In two Volumes, Vol II. Printed for the Author, 1886." p. 314: "Benjamin Kelley was of Irish extraction, and the name was originally written O'Kelley. His grandfather was the only child of Irish parents, and was born on the Ocean, as his parents were emigrating to America. The parents settled in Virginia, and the child grew to manhood, married, and raised a large family. His father returning to Ireland to see after his estate, was supposed to have been lost at sea, as his family never heard from him afterwards. "Benjamin Kelley was born in Bedford County, Virginia, not far from 1763. At about the age of fifteen years, he came to Kentucky, and sheltered himself from Indian fury, with the first settlers of the country, at Boonesboro. In January 1778, while with a party of 27, headed by Daniel Boone, engaged in making salt at Blue Lick, he, with the whole party, was taken prisoner, by the Indians. He fell into the hands of the tribe of which the notorious white renegade, Simon Girty, was the Chief. "An old squaw adopted him as her son, and he remained with the Indians about six years. At the expiration of this time, aided by his foster mother and an old Indian, he made his escape, and returned to his parents, in Virginia. Here he married the daughter of David Jerrell [sic], and afterwards emigrated with his father-in-law, to Kentucky. "The next information we have of him, he was pastor of Mt. Pleasant Church in Ohio county. He probably gathered this church, which was constituted in 1814, and ministered to it about ten years. His labors were greatly blessed in bringing sinners to Christ. His last sermon was preached in the midst of a great revival, during the continuance of which, about 100 had been added to the church. After baptizing some converts, he went home, and was taken down with a violent fever. He finally recovered from the fever, but he was bereft of reason, and so remained till about two hours before his death, which occurred, about 1824. After his reason returned, he talked freely of his hope in Christ, and departed in joyous triumph." An article entitled "First Settlers of Fordsville And A Short Account of Their Lives; First Hand Corn Mill taken to Hartford; History of Yates and Others" was written by Edwin Forbes and originally printed in The Hartford Republican on October 8, 1909; it was reprinted on November 11, 1982, on page 3 of the Times-News, Hartford, Kentucky in the "Lineage Lines" column by Harry D. Tinsley. A portion of the article follows: "Fordsville, Ohio county, Ky., was settled by three early Kentucky settlers, viz:-Benjamin Kelly, Ancil Hall and Richard Huff...Huff settled on the northeast side of what is now the town of Fordsville. Hall settled on the west side. Huff settled about the year 1793, but it is not known at what time Kelly and Hall settled their farms, other than that they were among the first settlers of this part of the State. Benjamin Kelly, when a small boy, was one of Daniel Boone's party, taken prisoner by the Indians while making salt at the Blue Licks in Nicholas county, and was taken to Detroit, Michigan where he made his escape, taking with him an Indian tomahawk, presented to him by Colonel McKee, the British Indian agent and principal advocate of the war then existing between the United States and the savages. This tomahawk is now owned by a grandson of Benjamin Kelly, living near Fordsville. "Ancil Hall was a prominent Baptist preacher of his time...Each of these early settlers had a graveyard on his farm and their remains and many of their relatives and friends were buried in them. The Kelly graveyard is the Fordsville cemetery. The Huff graveyard is on Cedar Hill, near the western corporation line. "The early name of Fordsville was Kelly's Precinct in honor of Benjamin Kelly and so remained until the year 184, when Galin Crowe of Hartford established a post office at Fordsville in honor of Elisha M. Ford at that time the main business man of Hartford and the first man to establish a mercantile business at Kelly's Precinct..." NOTES & INFO: In 1777, when Benjamin Kelley, age 15, left Virginia with settlers to go to Boonesboro, Kentucky, John Kelley probably went with him. On October 14, 1779, the settlers at Fort Boonesboro signed a petition in regard to land titles. John Kelley is on the list of those who signed the petition. October 16, 1779: A petition from Boone's Fort lists Benjamin Kelley and Joseph Kelley, indicating that they had been killed in defense of the fort or while hunting. Benjamin, however, had been captured by Indians but not killed. Joseph Kelley was probably killed. Among other names of those still alive was John Kelley. BOONESBORO, KENTUCKY settler: The following is from "Boonesborough. Its Founding, Pioneer Struggles, Indian Experiences, Transylvania Days, and Revolutionary Annals with Full Historical Notes and Appendix," by George W. Ranck. Filson Club Publication No. 16. Louisville, Kentucky: John P. Morton & Co., Printers to The Filson Club, 1901. [Numbered 444], pp. 107-108: [The following describes Boonesborough in the year 1779.] "Urged by their necessities and encouraged by a prospect of at least temporary immunity from invasion, the settlers about Boonesborough made unusual efforts to clear and cultivate the land, devoting by far the greatest part of it to corn. The crops, as often before, were in many cases made in common by companies organized for the purpose. A tract was signed, directors elected, and the members appeared every morning at the sound of a conch or beat of a drum, some to work in the field and others to guard those who did work. A member failing to comply with the contract forfeited his claim to the crop. A list of the members of one of these companies is preserved. [Footnote:] The list includes Benjamin White, Jesse Peake, James Anthony, Nathaniel Hart, John Cartwright, Robert Cartwright, George Maddern, Nicholas Anderson, John Harper, Peter Harper, William Johnson, Whitson George, Edward Hall, William Hall, John Kelley, Edward Williams, and Jesse Oldham. [U.S. Historical Register]" DEATH & BURIAL: In the old Kelley cemetery located near Fordsville, KY in Ohio County, is a tombstone with the following inscription: "John C. Kelley, Died Sept 11 1851, Age 85 yrs." Copied by John Blackburn on April 22, 1972. Benjamin Kelley, an original settler of Ohio County, and original owner of the land where the cemetery is located, is buried in this cemetery also, but his stone is missing. Cemetery is now called the Fordsville Cemetery. Benjamin and John were brothers. It seems likely that this tombstone identifies the brother of Benjamin. WILL: Benjamin Kelley's last will and testament was signed and sealed by him on 7 June 1826, witnessed by J. W. Flanagan, Harbin P. Cole, and John Smith. He named all of his children as follows: David J. Kelley, Lydia Lyon, heir and representative of Ann Lyon, deceased, Amy J. Crow, Benjamin (H.?) Kelley, Sarah A. Whitenhill, Mahala C. Kelley, and William R. Kelley, his "youngest son, Norval C. Kelley" and his wife, Nancy Kelley. He appointed Josiah Haynes, John B. Haynes, and Nancy Kelley (his wife) executors and executrix. He apparently died sometime prior to November, 1828; his will was proved in the November County Court, 1828, Ohio County, Ky. 1. Shaker Records?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gBB.2ACI/3401 Message Board Post: My 4x great grandparents Jacob and Lydia Kulp converted to Shakerism after they had kids (thank goodness) and lived at Pleasant Hill from the 1840s or 50s until I guess the 1880s. From what I can tell they apparently had 2 sons, Thomas and John. Thomas was my 3x great grandfather. I know little about John. I just saw him living in Pleasant Hill in the census and assume he was their son also. Thomas, at least, appears to have rejected or become indifferent to his parents' faith by 1857, when he had his first child. He did live in Mercer county at the time, it appears. I think he had at least 2 children there, Ellen (c. 1857) and Julius (Jan 1861). Jacob was considered an Elder of the Shaker community by 1880, and died there in Oct 1885. He lived in a 3 person dwelling with a minister and another man at one point. I'm wondering if there are any records available that the Shakers kept that I might be able to obtain. Knowing that Pleasant Hill is preserved to this day, I'm wondering if I might be able to learn what house(s) my family members lived in and visit them. Also, I'm wondering if Mercer County or some sort of historical society down there might have marriage records from as far back as the 1850s. I am not certain that they married in Mercer County (Thomas' wife, Mary, was apparently from S.C.) but it's worth a try if the records would still exist. If anyone would be kind enough that lives down there to perform a lookup of some sort or to check cemetery records for my family, I'd much appreciate it, but general answers to my broad questions would be great too. I don't have any reason to believe my family lived there past 1885, but it's possible, since I still don't know what becamse of John Kulp.

He is supposed to have a large monument on his grave but I cant find where he is buried I have been there and looked in as meany grave yards as I can but no luck that's my major project I did see a picture of it but the man who had it was gathering information for the show little house on the prairie and wouldn't say where it was located. Then thay made a move called the newton boys and that was it I couldn't get the information any more. If we could find the grave marker we might get some information on her hope it helps some I know its not much. Take care George
