May still be, I'd have to go look. The spring is still there & was considered quite large in the olden days...was their main source of water but probably is not quite as large now as it was then. When there's a good rain now you can really tell where it is. The area still is quite country but I'm sure not as wooded as then. Very pretty area....I could take a few pictures & send to you if you like. Yvonne

    2. Fern
    3. Thanks for sharing Barbara. I am not a Shaker descendant but was interested enough to visit that place in 2002 on a research trip to Kentucky. We stayed in one of the houses that had the rooms upstairs and during the day there was a wood worker doing his thing on the bottom floor. Good thing we are early risers as he showed up for work at 8:00 am sharp and started banging away. I use a cane when walking out and about and it is a very special one my sister gave me. (I have MS) He took it and made a replica of it. Very nice man. We stayed for a week and used it as a local residence while researching the area. What I really liked was to look out our windows and see the horses (BIG horses) in the pasture next to our house.. We were there for the sheep shearing which was interesting. The food was fantastic and we ate there every night we were there. We had the same table every night at 7:00 pm. It was an experience I wont forget even though I thought their beliefs were a bit creepy. To each his own!!!! Take care, Fern in Colorado I am researching the families of BUFORD - McCLUNG - McDOWELL - CRAIG - ROBERTSON - DUKE to name a few. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bobbeo60@yahoo.com> To: <KYMERCER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 1:38 PM Subject: [KYMERCER] Re: Shaker Records & Mercer Co. Thank you for the kind words and adding to other things to be seen at Shakertown. I am hoping to get down again, stay once more in Grandpa Francis home and learn more about his life. The funeral reenactment is said by Ms Curry, the director, to be the most well researched of their reenactments done at Shakertown. I have to agree, as I attended one last year and to follow the wagon with the casket to the cemetery was like attending the funeral of Grandpa Francis, the one who fascinates me the most. Other Shakertown, as it's known here in Mercer Co, things to enjoy....their food is wonderful!! much of it grown on their grounds. During the summer, for a small fee, they have a wonderful draft horse drawn carriage that takes you on a tour of the grounds & give you some of the local history. If you have horses, you can transport there & they will let you ride them over much of the 1,000 plus acres they own, as long as you close the gates behind you!! Beautiful country to ride in! Shaker's Landing, across the road from Shakertown, has a Ferry which will take you down the river, give you history of the area & also to see High Bridge... have snacks on board....just a wonderful quiet, scenic, interesting trip. The Harrodsburg Historical Soc. does research for a small fee. They can be reached at 859 734-5985 Tu thru Sat 1pm-4pm.
