    1. Re: [KYMERCER] Early churches of Mercer County?
    2. Judy, The Shawnee Run Baptist Church was one of the earliest churches established in Mercer Co., and is still in operation today. It was established in the 1790's [can't remember the exact date], but definitely before 1800. My g-g-grand-parents, George and Millie WRIGHT, were members until about 1835. It's been a while since I've visited the area, but I think it's located on the road between Burgin and Shakertown. There is a very old cemetery adjacent to the church. Perhaps someone on this list will have more information on this church and cemetery. There is a microfilm of the early church records available at the KY History Center, and also, I believe, through the LDS Family History Centers. It's been a few years since I researched this information and I'm relating this all from my on-again-off-again memory. 8-) Hope this helps, Joyce Carey ------- > From: gjsmith58@comcast.net > Date: 2006/01/30 Mon PM 05:50:18 EST > To: KYMERCER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [KYMERCER] Early churches of Mercer County? > > Would anyone know which were the early churches of Mercer County? 3. New Providence is one of, if not the oldest church in Mercer and was established in 1784-5. This was the church founded by the McAfees and McGees (Mrs. McGee and Mrs. McAfee were sisters) and these two families were among the first to settle Mercer Co (then Lincoln Co). The Chaplin River is far away from this area - perhaps a day's ride by horseback. The original McGee House is still standing, so it is very easy to find their land. Travel north on US 127 from Harrodsburg about 6 miles to the Jackson Pike, turn left onto Jackson Pike - travel a few miles - the old McGee property is on right side of Jackson Pike, both sides of the present railroad and on both sides of the salt river. The portion which has the old stone house passed out of the McGee family long ago, but the section before the railroad - was owned by the McGee descendants until just a few years ago. The old house has 3 foot thick fieldstone walls, huge sold cherry beams, two stories - The DAR erected a large plaque at the home. gjsmith58@comcast.net wrote: >Would anyone know which were the early churches of Mercer County? 3. Judy Perhaps you have seen this http://www.ole.net/~maggie/trimble/smithy.htm I got it by simply googling < "thomas Smithy" mercer county kentucky > without the brackets of course. There were several "hits" on this family. I'd do "smithy" and "smithey" as you get different responses. At any rate, the "address" of the writer is described as "I am still living on Thomas Smithy's place where James Thompson lived. Joseph Hybarger is still living on the same old place. William and Lenard are living between Providence and the bridge on William McAfee's place. G. Washington is living at Taylors front on the Ohio River." Further it is from: Eldorado Mercer County, Kentucky January 10, 1852 With a "return" of McAfee, Kentucky, Jan 12th/52 Now "Eldorado" is apparently near McAfee, which is about six miles north of Harrodsburg, on Highway 127 towards Frankfort. Here is the letter: Letter written to Fielden L. Smithey from his father, Richard Smithey on January 10, 1852 >>> Eldorado Mercer County, Kentucky January 10, 1852 Dear Son, I again embrace the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to inform of our present state of health. William and Lenard are living between Providence and the bridge on William McAfee's place. G. Washington is living at Taylors front on the Ohio River. Elizabeth's child is living with Willham his father. Willham is married again to James Thompson's daughter Margaret. The child's name is Richard Thomas. There are only 5 books, starting 1878 through 1932. I asked there & they didn't know if they were indexed w/the rest of the deeds, but I did see an index book in the front of the #1 book. They are on the left wall as you go in @ the end of the most recent deeds.

I could send 1 @ a time so as not to overwhelm your email. From the road it looks like there is a door going into the cave now. This was a cove spring, meaning it came out of the side of a hill. Most local historians think that possible early uses for caves (like for those that had the original Settlement or Preemption) would have been a place to actually live until their house was built. The spring would have been their water source & a main reason they selected that area to build. Many times they only used a lean-to before they built but a cave was much more preferable...i.e. safer from animals, Indians, weather, etc. At the McBrides Station they had the best situation...a cave & a spring. There was a school about 2 miles away on the Old Faulkner Rd. but I haven't yet found when that would have been built, but most probably after 1830 as th! at is about when Public Education came into existence in Mercer Co. Up to that point tutors were popular & the tutor was almost treated like a member of the family.
