Clark captured it from the British. The troops stayed at Corn island for a short time which is near where Louisville Ky is today. I don't think the troops were too friendly with the indians at that time. Since Peter's wife couldn't write her name (her signature does not appear on any of their deeds etc.), I'm wondering if her name was Conway or something like that and the spelling just got all screwed up.

Barb Terhune Dear Barb & All: I found an old note I wrote while at the Library some time in dim dark past which said: Quarter Session Ct fo Mercer Ck,KY 1793-1805 Abstract of Deed Book 4 QS (1989 "KY Ancestors" v. 25 #2. I found a Lincoln County militia roll that has your Nathan Lyn listed as active March-April 1781, and several other names known to be associated around McAfee Station including McAfee men as well.(At this time all this area was Lincoln County) An account of the attack on McAfee Station is found in the writings of Robert B. McAfee, and a list of defenders is also available, Nathan Lyn is not listed in either of these. However, the McAfee account describes the relief party arriving and driving the Indians away, in further pusuit an ambush was made at the Salt River and 1 man was killed. Nathan Lyn was known to be in area, and known to be a militiaman, and all of the other known responders were also milita at one time or another. Since your date and location of death is May 9th 1781 at McAfee Station, I am convinced that he was the 1 man killed at the river. Please respond with comments Luther D.

    1. RE: [KYMERCER] John Riley and Jalilah.....? NOT Darnel!
    2. JHigdon
    3. I have Bentley's index of Fauquier Co., VA marriages 1759-1800 and find no listing for a groom with the Riley surname. There is a will for John Riley, written 21 Jan 1791 proven 23 Dec 1791. Six sons, 3 daughters and several grandchildren named. No surviving wife, therefore he most likely was a widower by time of his demise. Of interest a Robert Bramlett witnessed the will. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of kariley1@sbcglobal.net Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2006 8:50 AM To: KYMERCER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [KYMERCER] John Riley and Jalilah.....? Surnames: Riley, Darnall, Darnell, Bramblett Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gBB.2ACI/3423 Message Board Post: Here is the transcription of the letter referring to the marriage between Jalilah Bramblett and John Riley. The lady who sent it to us said "It was sent from Kentucky to the courthouse in Fauquier County, and is asking if there is a marriage record on file for them. I came across it in the courthouse on one of my visits; it's indexed in the chancery records, I believe. It's actually a separate book that is kept on the counter of the clerk's desk." I don't know what, if any, response, Robert McAfee received. I assume he wrote this letter as part of preparing Jalilah's widow's pension application for John's Revolutionary War service. No proof of their marriage is included in the copy of the Revolutionary War Pension file we received from the National Archives. If I understand correctly, the parish registers of the Fauquier County have not survived. Also, no mention of the marriage is made in Alcock's book "Fauquier County Familys" so I doubt that an official record still exists. I have taken a few liberties with the punctuation as Robert is not clear when he is ending one sentence and beginning another. The handwriting, on the other hand, is fairly legible so I think I have faithfully reproduced the content of the letter. I have, of course, kept the original spelling as much as possible. Harrodsburgh, Ky, Jany. 15th 1839 Sir, Sometime about the year 1771 or 2- Mr. John Ryley was married to a Jalilah Bramblett, in Faquier County, Virginia. I wish some record or proof on this subject, will you be so good as to attend to this business as soon as possible after you get this letter. If it was not usual to record marriages in those days please to send me your certificate of the fact, directed to Harrodsburgh Kentucky- yours with high regard- Robt b. 1. Marriage Lookup Short and Wariner or Warren
    2. Charlotte E Flock
    3. I'm looking for a marriage record of William Boyd Short, married to Caroline Wariner or Warren. Their only child, Charles McPherson Short. On Charles death certificate it mentions his parents names.. The closest that I can figure out that William probably got married in the late 60's but no later then 1872, because that's when Charles McPherson Short was born. I have not been able to place William Boyd Short on the 1870 census. So I want to think that he was married after 1870 but no later then 1872. Remember Charles was born in 1872. If you happen to have a marriage record book on hand could you please check the index. for William Boyd Short and Caroline Wariner or Warren. Charlotte
