    1. Possible visit to Mercer Co.
    2. Linda Thomas
    3. Thanks to all who have emailed, both on and off list, giving me suggestions and ideas for my visit. I have printed them out and will be taking them with us. I still haven't decided for sure which county to go to, but am leaning towards Mercer, mostly because it's more "on the way home" than Bath. No matter which county I go to, though, I'm sure I will have fun searching. And I know that somehow I need to make a return visit to spend more time and hit all the areas that I need to, so all suggestions will be kept for future reference to aid in my researching. Thanks all! Linda Thomas "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace." ---Numbers 6:24-26---

    1. Visit to Mercer County
    2. Linda Thomas
    3. I may be visiting Mercer County Monday, May 23. (Or I will be going to Bath County... unfortunately, I will only have time for one place, so I have to choose.) I am specifically searching for the Wingate family. Elizabeth Wingate married Joseph Divine/Devine. I have perused through everything the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana has on Mercer County. I am thinking that the best thing I can do while there is to actually go to the court house and look through land records and other court stuff. I notice that the historical society is closed on Monday, so I know I can't visit there. Are the land records at the court house? Does anyone know what else may be available there? Any suggestions welcome as to where to go or what to look through. I will not have a great deal of time, perhaps only about 4 hours. We will be returning home from Resaca, Georgia after demonstrating at the Resaca CW reenactment and driving a large pick up truck and hauling a trailer. Does anyone have suggestions as to where to park. Sometimes that can be pretty hairy with such a large outfit as we will be driving. We're leaving for Georgia early Thurs. morning, so any emails after that will not get to me in time. :\ Thanks in advance. Linda Thomas For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13

    1. Headley family
    2. shari
    3. Does anyone have Headley family lines in Mercer Co. KY? Am trying to track Sarah Headley and Joseph White. Believe James White in 1820 Casey Co. KY was son of Joseph and Sarah or related to them through other family lines. Sarah is listed as Hadley in Churchville Pres. Church records in Bucks Co. PA, but was actually Sarah Headley (m. Joseph White on June 10, 1765. License was taken out on June 8. Transcription error (?). Thanks, Shari

    1. WILEY WHITE
    2. shari
    3. Someone contacted me abt. 2 wks. ago abt. Wiley White. I am sorry to say my e-mails got deleted. I have been researching my George White, s/o Joseph White Jr. and Sarah Headley. I learned that Sarah was listed as HADLEY in the Churchville Pres. marriage records in Buck's Co. PA. After finding many names associated with George White from Anson Co. NC and Washington Co. VA---not to mention Bucks Co. PA, I am thinking that Wiley White was son of Joseph White III and Sarah Unk. Joseph White III was born abt. 1766 to Joseph White Jr. and Sarah Headley. Joseph and Sally Unk. I think this might be Sarah Hutcheson/Hutchings. Joseph and Sarah White had sally, John, Betsey, WILEY, Joseph IV, Mary, and WILLIAM. Joseph White Jr. was s/o Joseph White and Margaret Leeth. In will of George White for 1824 (Casey Co. KY)--and probated in March Court of 1824, executors were Thomas Hutchings and William Minor. Witnesses were Jacqueline Ambler Lewis, Thomas Thomas, and Jacob Johnson. Appraisers were Leonard Taylor, William Cobb (Lobb), and HENRY HARPER. I now have some connecting names for these Whites some names in the will. George White m. Eunice Dungans in Washington Co. VA. This name can be found connected to the Headley line as well as the Cobb line. I have also traced the surnames of Drake and Bunting/Buntin/Bunton to Crawford Co. IL where my George Washington White died in 1895. He did not show up there until 1851. Others from all these family lines followed to the area about the same time. Averilla HARPER was last wife of Joseph White Sr. I am not sure how Henry Harper was connected to her. Some have Averilla as born abt. 1707, yet she shows in Joseph White will in Anson Co. NC for a date of 1804. DAR has her listed as marrying! Joseph White Sr. abt. 1800. This would make Averilla very elderly, but Joseph Sr. lived to a ripe old age!! I do not have documents for Joseph White. A lot of info I am gathering with the help of many---whom I give a BIG THANK YOU to. I hope to order these docs. soon. Joseph Sr. was brother of Carolus White (sons of Old Moses). Carolus White descendents come into Crawford Co. IL just about the time my George Washington White did. Many of these descendents show born in OH, IN, TN. My own George W. has three conflicting places of birth--TN and NC.and KY. He was b. May of 1817 in Casey Co. KY. In Casey Co. KY marriages I received from Harrodsburg-Mercer Historical Research Library, there was a Henry White who married Elizabeth Rossen in 1808. There was John White who married Lucinda White in 1817. I am wondering if anyone knows who this Henry and John White were. Many of these White lines married cousins. I think John White was son of William White and Jane Lusk--and Lucinda was d/o Stephen White Jr. and Theodosia White. According to the will of George White, he requested his sons to be bound out to learn trade or business when he died. All of his children were quite young when he died in 1824. I am wondering if many of these White lines blended together by children being sent to live with relatives. My George Washington White was sent to be with Elijah Webster----who m. Jane Rains. Nathan W. White appears to have gone to Spencer Co. KY with a Craften/Grafton family. Nathan shows up in Clark Co. IL sometime before 1880. Hope this helps whoever contacted me about Wiley and William White. These White lines traveled a lot---Scotland, England, Delaware, PA, Washington and Smyth Co. VA (with some going to Montgomery Co. VA), Anson Co. NC, Perquimans Co. NC, and possibly Johnston Co. NC (for a short time). in Mongtomery Co. VA, there was Richard and Hezekiah. I am thinking this Hezekiah was the one who m. Susan JACKMAN in Mercer Co. Marriages. They were in Rev. War--and Hezekiah had a very odd spelling for his first name. Shari

    1. Clay Hill
    2. Eric James
    3. Clay Hill is still standing. It came for sale a couple of years and was sold. It appears to be occupied currently. It is surrounded by a large parcel of land and sit adjacent to a cemetery, overlooking it. A parcel that large could become subject to subdivision. It was in pretty rough shape when I saw it for sale. There's been additions over the years and it has a swimming pool. Its main portion of the house remains a fine example of early federal architecture.

    1. M. Marshall
    2. shari
    3. Laura, The Early KY Landholders, 1787-1811 page, only shows M. Marshall as prior assignee. This was for land on Rolling Forks (Forkland) with dates from 23 July 1800 to 30 July 1806. There was a Benjamin White for Casey Co. KY on 18 Aug 1807 and for 1808 on Fishing Creek. Prior assignee was a White. The Forkland boundary changes from county to county shows residents of once Mercer Co. as "now residents of Casey Co. KY. They were owling (1st name not shown on page), Arthur Northcut, George White, Matthew Coulter, John C. Goode, Ephriam Cunningham, John Gee, Jacob Johnson, George Hunter, Martin Conder, Charles Kirkland, Leonard Taylor, William Hewenton, Thomas Hutchison, Thomas Shannon, Matthew Flory, William Sealet, William Clements, Arthur Jones, John Christian, Henry Harper, William Taylor, Jacqueline Ambler Lewis, and William Tabb. This area was 3 1/2 miles from the southwest corner of Mercer Co. I am having a problem with some of these surnames. Hutchinson appears on the! same page as Hutchings (and in will of George White, 1824). Hewenton is anything from Howenton to Howerton. Sealet becomes Seals and Sears. Tabb becomes Tibbs in some things--and back to Tabb. I know the English pronounced the river Thames as Timmes. There is the Tamme farm. Our McGinnis family cemetery sits on the Tamme farm land (once owned by William McGinnis. So, English Tabb may be Tibb. I have a feeling there may have been more than one George White in early Casey-Lincoln-Mercer Co. KY. The land holder page shows George White getting land on 25 June 1787, with prior assignee as ? White. Thomas Hutchings, Henry Harper, Jacob Johnson, Jacqueline Ambler Lewis (m. Eliza Hutchings), Thomas Shannon were in will of George White. The Hutchings line was heavily connected to the Blagrove/Blagrave line. Jacqueline Ambler Lewis may be associated with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court line of John Marshall. Just an assumption on that one. I have tracked these peop! le to Lunenburg and Washington Co. VA. I am certain George White m. E unice Dungans in 1795 in Washington Co. VA. I am currently in the process of locating documents for them. Also, George White bound out his sons (except for James) to learn trade or business. George Washington White was bound on 6 Sept 1824 to Elijah and Jane Rains Webster. Jane is from the Rains and Ownes line---and the Owens appear to have been in Washington Co. VA. Benjamin Logan was there also. If anyone has Nathan, William, John, Andrew, Eson, and Ely White in family lines would love to know. At this time, it appears that Nathan W. was living with James Craften family---and removed to Spencer Co. KY--where he married Eliza Jane Craften. Eson lived and died in Mercer-Casey Co. KY. He married Cyrena Coulter. I can find nothing on other sons and daughters, Catherine, Isabel, Esther, Salley, Polly, Patsey, Nancy. I have a feeling they were step-daughters---or born to wife Jane after 1820 and before 1824. Some of these family lines go into Crawford Co. IL (from IND and ! OH) about 1850s--the same time my George Washington White appeared in Crawford Co. IL. Elijah Webster d. in 1826 in Mercer Co. KY, so suspect George W. was living with another family after Elijah's death---possibly James rains and Nancy Owens Rains. Harrodsburg-Mercer Historical Society has not marriage for George White. they do have a marriage for Henry White to Elizabeth Rossen in 1808 and John White to Lucinda White, 2-27-1817. I believe John and Lucinda to be in the line of Stephen White and Agatha Bramblett. In Crawford Co. IL, the name of Bramblett becomes Bramble. Sure would like to find out who the Benjamin and Henry White were. Just two more names to add to the state of near insanity. I know the George W. White in Casey Co. 1830 and 1840 Census as Head of House is not mine. Nor is Randolph White and James White. George W. was s/o James White--and my understanding they removed to Overton Co. TN. I think James was m. to Linday Graham (marriage page I have), 3-16-1815. Also, Henry White disappears. Am wondering if the name of Rossen was Rosser or Ross at some point. One Hezekiah White m. Susan Jackman in Mercer Co. abt. 1809. They removed to Howard Co. MO--and divorced--or Hezekiah died. Susan remarried into what appears to be an influential line. I found a Hezekiah White in! Montgomery Co. VA (next to Washington and Smyth Co. VA) in Daniel Triggs Co., Rev. War. There is a page that shows variations in spelling of names. Hezekiah was Herckiah and Herckekiah White. Richard White was Whitt and White. I believe this Hezekiah to be the one who m. Susan Jackman. Aren't I having fun now!! Would you believe the surname of Benjamin was Bingaman. Just hoping someone will have a name that appears in this posting. Each little thing helps me. Shari
