People use to ford the river. You may still see the concrete pad which is between Yamacraw Bridge and the railway trussel. Has anyone know the origin of the name, Yamacraw? I heard it was an Indian tribe from South Carolina.
Added information regarding the bridges at Yamacraw. I have found a brochure called 'The Big South Fork.' This brochure is on the Big South Fork National River and Recreation area, Kentucky/Tennessee. This brochure was printed in 2000. The map that they show in the brochure, names the bridge that I described being at the mouth of Wolf Creek and The Big South Fork that was built in the late thirties and early forties, is now being called The 'Yamacraw Bridge' in this brochure. Kenneth D. Jones
In reference to the bridge at Yamacraw: The main bridge was built by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company for the K & T Railway (Kentucky/Tenessee), and was owned by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company. It was for railway only. People did foot walk it. This bridge is still standing to this day. There are no tracks on the bridge. The only other bridge at Yamacraw to my knowledge is the Raised Ford Bridge, meaning the bridge was raised up just above the water. That is the only name I have ever heard it called. When we crossed the river, the expression was, 'we forded the river.' This may be where the name came from. The bridge was built by the CCC. The road to this bridge no longer exist. If the water was low enough you forded right through the water. I was told by my mother that in the winter sometimes the water would be so frozen that people with their wagons and other vehicles of that time, actually were able to cross right across the ice. The road from Hill Top (where I was born) down to the Yamacraw Raised Ford Bridge, was also built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). The Raised Ford Bridge was down stream from the railway bridge by approximately 500 to 1000 feet, plus or minus. At first the Raised Ford Bridge was the only way for traffic to cross over the Big South Fork River to Walls Town; Comargo; Koger Hallow; Oz, later called Paint Cliff; Co-op and Bell Farm. These are all mining communities. From Bell Farm there was a wagon trail all the way to TN. I have walked it many times as a teenager. In the late thirties and early forties, the bridge that crossed over the Big South Fork at Wolf Creek was built (KY Hwy. #92) to Monticello. This is the only bridge that is traveled today. Kenneth D. Jones Born and raised at Hill Top, KY
Im not absolutly sure of this, But..... There used to be another bridge called that. It IS on the dividing line, always has been, and its on the South Fork. In looking for info about people who used to live in that area (mine are some of them) you need to bear in mind that the old bridge was a little south of where the current one is. Im not at all sure of where, exactly ,it was but several of my Cousins who lived in the area have mentioned the Old Bridge as a point of refrence. Hope this helps a bit. I think the Yamacaw Bridge has something to do with the dividing line of Wayne Co. and McCreary Co. Yamacaw River. One side of the bridge says or did say entering Wayne Co. and the other side entering McCreary Co. Maybe the U. S. Forest Service people can come up with something on the subject and the history of it. ??
dont know if this is much help or not,but as a boy back in early 40s i remember the county line as being west of yamacraw bridge towards monticello just before you start up the mountain (hill) to us abt 1-2 miles past bridge ,at that time it was gravel road david ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenna Austin" <KennaAustin@highland.net> To: <KYMCCREA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 10:28 PM Subject: Re: [KYMCCREA] Confused Here, nothing new > JR- was the area Wayne or Whitley Co., KY before it becames McCreary Co., > KY? > > > > > > "Remember to the world you are just one person, but maybe to one person you > are the world." > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "JR Jones" <jrjonesky@msn.com> > To: <KYMCCREA-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 9:01 PM > Subject: Re: [KYMCCREA] Confused Here, nothing new > > > > My grandparents ran a grocery store in the hilltop area, they were Luther > and Hattie Jones, yamacraw river was just below the store area, this would > be Mccreary Co. > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: Sch3111@aol.com > > Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 8:58 PM > > To: KYMCCREA-L@rootsweb.com > > Subject: Re: [KYMCCREA] Confused Here, nothing new > > > > Was the river the dividing line between Wayne and Whitley Counties before > > 1912 when McCreary County was made? > > I'm not sure either, but I thought all that area, Yamacraw and Hill Top > were > > Wayne County. > > Sue > > > > > > > > > > ==== KYMCCREA Mailing List ==== > If you wish to unsubscribe from the KYMCCREA Mailing List, send only the word > UNSUBSCRIBE to KYMCCREA-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM or if you are > on the Digest List to KYMCCREA-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

Clear DayI've been in and out of to many censuses. I was thinking that Yamacraw was located in Wayne Co., KY before McCreary Co., KY was formed. I figure that Worley, KY is Worley Hill Top comm. If it is then I believe that Worley would be Whitley Co., KY back then. Does anyone know? April 23, 1910 Stearns/Yamacraw KYApril 23, 1910 Stearns Coal Co. Mining Camp near Worley, KY So was this camp in Whitley or Wayne Co., KY?????? Thanks, Kenna

Hi all! Christmas is just around the corner and if you are like me you have at least one or two people that are just impossible to buy for. We never know what to buy them. I received this e-mail from a friend of mine who is laid up at home for surgery. She is a great lady with a great talent. Read below for those hard to find and hard to please christmas gifts with a very reasonable price. I put pics of some of my dolls on the web site at http://www.geocities.com/dsizemore2003/dolls.html But I couldnt put anything about selling them on there, just for viewing. Here is my info. I will make the dolls whatever color they want,if I can get the colors! I make two sizes, some have real full skirts to set on bed, others are smaller so you can put them on a shelf. I make bride dolls, butterfly Barbies,Pixie Barbies,Gone With The Wind style Barbies and or any theme they want. One lady wants Winnie The Pooh colors, another sunflowers, whatever they want. Prices: The store where I am trying to sell them is selling them for over $130.00 to $250.00 dollars, but I will sell them cheaper as I really need to sell some soon! And I need to stay busy while I am down or I will go crazy.Plus I wont be on the PC for the first 4 weeks. Bride Dolls are $75.00 because I have to use 5 spools of Crochet thread ,pearls, sequins yards of hand crocheted lace.etc. Angels,Pixies,Butterfly Barbies are $65.00 Most others $ 50.00 it depends on what they want. Plus they will have to pay shipping cost. The pics do not do them justice as they are breath taking when you see them.I am so proud of them. Dear List Members, I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of those working in the courthouses. I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year.
