    1. Albert Collier - Son of John Ramsey Collier
    2. Mark and Linda Collier
    3. All, I found a record of a burial at Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah for Albert Collier (1896 - 1982) on the Find A Grave website http://www.findagrave.com. I tried to contact the person who contributed the information to the site, Connie Thomas, but my email was returned undeliverable. I have been doing genealogy research on Collier families in the Jackson Purchase region of Western Kentucky for several years and I have an Albert Collier in my database born 11 July 1896 in McCracken County, son of John Ramsey Collier and Jay T. White. I suspect this is the same man. Does anyone have any information about this family? Happy New Year! Mark A. Collier Italy

    1. McCracken County - Burials - 1888
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, I am posting a short list of burials in McCracken County, as handled by the funeral directors in the February 1888 time frame. These records have the date of death and the date of the burial and, in most cases, the individual arranging the funeral. This list does not contain all of the deaths and burials in McCracken, of course, in February of 1888, since private burials were still performed by families, without the assistance of undertakers. I hope to have several posts this week for the JP List, as I work toward resumption of our past, regular schedule of postings. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Burials - February 1888 =================================================================== Name of Deceased Individual Handling Arrangements Death Date Burial Date =================================================================== John Edmons(infant) John Edmons 2/14/1888 2/15/1888 Minerva Edwards C.Jones 2/1/1888 2/2/1888 Mrs. Hook P.H.Hook 2/13/1888 2/14/1888 C.B.Thompson W.C.Shrieve 2/3/1888 2/5/1888 Mrs. Biffel John Biffel 2/6/1888 2/7/1888 Belle Wallace J.W.Roper 2/1/1888 2/2/1888 Mrs. Yarbro E.M.Yarbro 2/17/1888 2/18/1888 Harry Husbands Ben Bowers 2/17/1888 2/19/1888 Willie Rice W.Rice by E.B.Richerson 2/19/1888 2/20/1888 Florence Ida Boaz J.R.Collier 3/1/1888 3/2/1888 ~to be continued~ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    1. Update on Maps
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Pursuant to my pledge to keep the lists advised concerning maps of the region, I am happy to report that duplicating masters have now been created for the large KY Geologic Society maps which were created in the 1920-1931 time frame, and are, therefore, ready for copying for those who have an interest in them. I have created a web page which has the map descriptions and ordering information, which can be found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/KentuckyCountyMaps.htm So far, I have located maps for Ballard, Carlisle, Calloway, Graves, Fulton, Hickman, Marshall, McCracken, Todd, Christian, Lyon, Livingston, Caldwell, Hopkins, Logan, Warren, and Crittenden counties in western Kentucky. Those who are interested in the area known as the Land Between the Rivers(today known as The Land Between the Lakes) will be able to see the area before it became a national park, with the forced eviction of the inhabitants, on the Trigg, Lyon and Livingston maps. I also included the 1880 Proctor rectangular survey map of the JP region on the web site, in the event that someone may be need a copy of that item. I believe it is possible that I may have a few more maps of various counties in Kentucky in storage, but, for now, the above is the current inventory. The time I would normally have spent on preparing a data posting for today was used in getting the web site prepared and ready to go. Tomorrow, we will have another selection from Dr. Gordon Wilson. -B ====================================================================

    1. Report on Available Maps
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Last month, I had committed to giving a report to the JP List, and the county lists which I host, concerning the 1920's era county maps which I have had in storage, after such time as I was able to inventory them to see exactly what was present in the collection. I have now completed the inventory. For the JP region, I have maps in the 1921-1929 period for Ballard, Carlisle, Calloway, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Marshall and McCracken counties - that is, all eight counties comprising the Jackson Purchase region. I also found that I have other maps for the same period covering Trigg, Caldwell, Lyon, Livingston, Warren, Hopkins, Crittenden, Christian, Todd and Logan counties - which are most of the counties in the western part of Kentucky, although these latter ones do not fall into the JP region. My thought at this point is to create a web site showing each of the available maps and their general contents and provide ordering information in that fashion. Some of the maps are in a fragile condition and care will have to be taken when duplicating masters are created. I might consider putting a PayPal option on the web site if there is any interest in using that route to speed up the process. It seems to have become a very popular utility. I will supply county libraries a gratis copy of their county map upon request. Over the next week or so, I will begin having duplicating masters made of the those maps for which one has not yet been produced. Those of you who have an interest in one or more of these maps can drop me a note off-list, so that I can better determine how many actual copies may be needed. Unless problems occur in creating duplicating masters from those originals which are fragile, the costs should remain constant with what we have been seeing - $12.00 for a single map, $21.00 for two, $30.00 for three, etc.(i.e., $9.00 for each map beyond the first). Some postage costs can be saved by sending multiple copies in a single mailing tube. I probably should say again that I am not attempting to generate any profit on these maps, but I do try to cover my costs in creating the masters, duplicating the maps on archival paper and postage and mailing tubes. I've been asked numerous times why these maps cannot be placed online. The primary difficulty is their size. Most of them range in size from 2 feet by 2 feet up to 3 feet by 3 feet. A special plotting scanner would be necessary to create a digital image of each map, and each image would be huge and generally not very workable for us genealogists, especially if one wanted to print the image. It would probably require 15 or 20 "pieces" that would have to be printed and then taped together in some fashion. Reducing the size of the original map before creating a digital image is not really an option because of the loss of detail and the inability to read the place names. And I think, too, that most of us genealogists like to use the full size maps. I much prefer them myself. That is the latest on the map situation for now, and I will continue to update the lists as I begin to get the web site up and items listed. -B ====================================================================

    1. Pierce JONES
    2. Linda K. Jones
    3. Hi folks, Hopefully you can help me. Family stories are that we are related to a Pierce JONES (he would be my gg uncle) and was living in Paducah with his sister Mary JONES HEWETT/HEWITT WILSON, and near his sisters Malinda JONES PETERS and Lucinda JONES JOICE/JOYCE. I found a reference in a section on City of Paducah in: Battle, J. H, W. H. Perrin and G. c. Kniffin. (1885). Kentucky: A history of the state. Chicago, IL. F. A. Battey Publishing Co. p. 94. "The ground for Oak Grove Cemetery, some thirty-six acres, was purchased April 19, 1847, at $3 per acre, Hiram SMEDLEY, J. CAMPBELL and W. McKay LAMBDIN being a committee of the council appointed for that purpose. It was surveyed and platted by Adolph MILLER. The lots were valued at $5 each. Ornamentation of the grounds began five years ago. The first grave on the ground was dug prior to its purchase for cemetery purposes, it being that of Pierce JONES (my underline), who was killed in 1837 by a man named COOKSEY. The people of the living city feel justly proud of their 'city of the dead." Now the questions: Are there records from that date? If so, where do I find them when I visit? Are there newspapers from that time? Also, where do I find these? Are there indexes, etc. of this cemetery? Who do I contact? Thanks for any help you can give me. Linda K. Jones Seattle

    3. Bill, thank you so much for the time and effort you are putting into this project. I have been working in PA and TX for years and am now moving into KY to research various lines around Paducah - WILSON, JONES, PETERS, JOYCE/JOICE. 1. Maps Update
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. This is a quick note to say that the expression of interest in the Marshall County and McCracken County maps did reach the minimum quantity to allow me to go ahead with the preparation of duplicating masters, and then reproduction copies, for these maps, and I should have them in hand by Monday. I believe I have contacted everyone by private e-mail who expressed interest in one, or both, maps. Those who desired a Calloway map, but postponed getting one until the Marshall and/or McCracken map(s) were ready, can now get both, or all three, sent in a single mailing tube. If I missed anyone, or there are questions, please contact me off-list. I have had quite a number of questions from subscribers concerning maps for other counties in the JP, and especially Graves County. I now believe that I very likely do have maps in this same series for most or all of the other JP counties, but I will not be certain about it until I finish inventorying my storage vault, which I hope to do by the end of September. I will keep the lists posted on what I find. I admit to a bit of embarrassment in not being able to simply say, from memory, what I have or do not have, but I have been collecting genealogical odds and ends for the JP region for nearly 40 years, and the fireproof vault in which I store a part of it contains about seven 4-drawer file cabinets, three 4-drawer lateral files, about 50+ file boxes, and various other containers with materials in them(and I have an almost equal number of filing cabinets here in my home, as well). I do not work with all of these materials all of the time, and, as a result, I have to refresh my memory of what is present in storage every few years. I will return with a posting to the JP List shortly. -B =====================================================================

    1. Confederate Pensioners from JP Region - Part 2 & Maps Update
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are returning to our review of Confederate pensioners in the JP region. The list below is the second installment in this series. The name of the pensioner and/or his widow is given and the county in which he resided when he, or his widow, applied for the pension. I have *no additional information* on these people, other than what is shown below. I have been reminded, too, that the Pogue Library at MSU also has these pension application on microfilm and that they do have a microfilm copier. Those who reside close to Murray should be able to visit Pogue and get copies of these pension applications. An update on the map situation, relative to the Marshall and McCracken maps - at this point, we have not reached the minimum of 25 for each map that is needed for the process to go forward in preparing a duplicating master and then having reproductions made. However, we are close to reaching that minimum for the Marshall County map, and the McCracken map is not far behind. I suspect that we will reach both minimums in the next 24 hours, as more folks express their interest. I will keep the lists continually posted on that matter. Tomorrow, we will have another biography from "History of Kentucky in 5 Volumes". -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Confederate Pensioners from JP Region - Part 2 Parham, William T. 1. Further Question on Maps - Marshall & McCracken Counties
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - After the offering of the Calloway County 1929 map, I have had quite a number of inquiries about the availability of other county maps in that same series. As I continue to work my way through the multitude of items which I have in storage, I am looking for other maps of the JP region in this, or other, map series. I have now located a map of Marshall County, and one of McCracken County, in this same series. I know that we have interest in these maps, because of the number of inquiries I have received. But, as I always try to do, I want to inquire about our subscribers interest in each of these maps before I take steps to have them reproduced. The Marshall County map measures about 2 feet by 2 feet. Like the Calloway map, it presents a sort of "last glimpse" of the County prior to the TVA's dam project, which flooded a portion of the eastern side of the county. Some of the not so well known towns seen on this map include Dogtown, Jonestown, Hiatt, Birmingham, Tatumsville, Scale, Iola, Sharp, Glade, and Little Cypress. The schools which are shown include Van Zora, Joppa, Johnston, Liberty, Jackson, Darnell, New Constitution, Enterprise, Minter, McCain, Collie, Howard, Pinnacle, Pugh, Bald Knob, Beechwood, Stahl, Lone Valley, and many more, as well as perhaps two dozen churches. The larger creeks and rivers are identified. The McCracken map is approximately 2 feet by 3 feet. Some of the lesser known towns which appear on this map include Krebbs Station, Epperson, Reidlawn, Camelia, Temple Mill, Futrell Switch, Grahamville, Massack Switch, Rossington, and Cecil. Lovelaceville, though in Ballard County, is also shown, as is Metropolis, IL, across the Ohio River. Some of the schools shown include Kettler, St. Johns, Staub, Rosebower, Hovecamp, Shinbridge, Sunnyslope, Massack, Ridge, Camelia, Lamont, Simms, Burnley, Lee, High Point, and others. The Blizzard Bottoms Dredge Ditch is shown, as well as Owens Island, Cuba Towhead and other landmarks, and, as with the Marshall map, may churches are shown. Please let me know, by private e-mail(off list) if you have an interest in either or both of these maps. The cost remains steady as $12.00 for each map requested individually, which includes the First Class postage and mailing tube. However, for those who would like both maps, or who have waited to get the Calloway map until the Marshall and/or McCracken maps became available, I can send all of the maps in one mailing tube. As a result, each map beyond the first one can be reduced to $9.00. Thus, 2 maps going to the same address would be $21, 3 maps would be $30, etc. If there is sufficient interest to warrant reproducing these maps, I will let everyone know and proceed with having that done. We will return to our Confederate pensioner series tomorrow. -B ====================================================================
