Has anyone heard of a Harris County cemetery? I am looking for the burial site of Wiley Johnson Rudolph, whose's death certificate said he was buried in "Harris Grave Yard". I can't find that cemetery listed via the USGS geonames website ( http://geonames.usgs.gov) for McCracken county. Jason
Hello all! Does anyone know what schools were in the area of Paducah KY in the time specified above? I'm looking for photos of grandparent and siblings. Great Grandfather worked for the government on locks and dams. If anyone knows of info on that in the area I'd appreciate it also. Debra
KYMCCRAC-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Dear List! Just signed on to your mailing list! Hoping to find a marriage for Thomas BURTON (1848 Rockcastle Co. KY--died UNK) and Mary JARVIS (April 1851 Muhlenberg Co. KY--died UNK). "Our" Thomas Burton s/o Jesse and Margaret Brooks BURTON of Rockcastle Co. KY was born 1848. Thomas Burton is listed in the 1850, 1860 Rockcastle Co. KY Census. Since the construction of the RAILROAD drew many men to the Ohio, Grayson, etc. counties of KY after 1865, perhaps Thomas Burton met Mary Jarvis and they married along the RR route somewhere. Looking for any possibility.... <1866> Thomas Burton/Burden/Burtin/Burtan (various spellings) and Mary Jarvis Burton's first child Lue Burton born ca 1867 might be the first of 10 or 11 Burton children; Burton & Jarvis could have married <1866>. >1870< Thomas Burton is in the Leitchfield Grayson Co. KY 1870 Census in the HH of several men who are listed as "RR LABS." Thomas is 21; there is no info as to whether or not he is Single or Married. Also in the HH of Y. T. Pryor are Thomas Burton's two brothers, (Wm) Henry Burton, 17 and John Burton, 15; both listed as rail road laborers. There is a Levi Halensworth b NC living in this HH who also works for "rail road." Nancy Burton's was married to Levi Hollingsworth (date?); have no marriage info for Nancy Burton and Levi Hollingsworth. >1870< Thomas Burton's mother Margaret Brooks BURTON, widow of Jesse Burton, is listed in the Ohio Co. KY Census as a farmer. Also in Margaret's HH are "Mealy" (? Amelia), Mary Elizabeth (1857) and James S. Burton (1859?). Burton children missing from Margaret's HH: Elizabeth, Thomas, Wm. Henry, John, Sarah, (Mary) Susan and Nancy! Wm. ADAMS age 70 (74) is listed in this HH as a "farm hand." 1870 continued.... Thomas, Henry & John are in Ohio Co. Leitchfield. Sarah had married John Broughton ca 1867, Susan had married Emmit Quinn. There's NO info on Elizabeth or Nancy for 1870. >1872< August 5----Ohio Co. KY Caney Precinct----Thomas Burton's signature is on my GGparents marriage certf as a "witness," and on other marriage documents for his sister, my great-grandmother, Amelia E. (Permelia) Burton/Burden to marry John Clark/Clarke (b1848 VA-died 1901 KY). Amelia was days shy of being age 21 and needed permission from Margaret, etc...Both Thomas and (Wm.) Henry Burton's signatures are on statements supporting Margaret being Amelia's only living parent. Jesse Burton died ca 1863, location UNKN. >1880< Ohio Co. Hartford KY Census----"a" Thomas BURTON and Mary Jarvis Burton are now living in Hartford with these Burton children: Cordelia (?1868 KY), William H. Burton (?1870 KY), Maggie N. Burton (?1876 KY), Nulia/Neelia Burton (?1878 KY), Ruby Burton (?), Amelia Burton,(?), James Searcy Burton (1887-1957?), Mazzie Burton (?), Mary Jane Burton (?). >1880 continued... Margaret Brooks Burton, Nancy Hollensworth, James S. Burton and Nancy's dtr Anney Hollensworth are now living in ROCKCASTLE CO. KY for this census. Next door to Margaret are my great-grandparents John and Amelia CLARK/CLARKE, dtr Maggie (1874), Nanie J. (1877), John BEN Clark (1879). All of the Burton men---except Thomas Burton----and their brothers-n-law are in this 1880 Rockcastle Co. KY Census and all are coal miners. (NOTE: Martin McCarty/McCarthy listed as boarder in Margaret's HH. Nancy Burton Hollendsworth later married Martin McCarty in Rockcastle Co. KY. Have never found any marriage or death info for Levi Hollensworth/various spellings....) >1900< Ohio Co. Cromwell KY Census----Mary CALBERT, widow (bApril 1851), dtr Mary J. Burton, son James S. Burton, dtr Gay R. Burton (1893?). Mary Jarvis Burton married unknown CALBERT (Calvert, Colbert, Colvert, Albert, etc...) ca1893. The last Burton child born 1893. ALSO in Mary Calbert's HH is James A. Davis (1866 KY) and wife Amelia Burton Davis. James and Amelia m'd ca 1898. Thomas Burton drops out of the sight after 1880 Ohio Co. KY Census. There is "a" Thomas Burton/Burtan listed in the OHIO CO. KY marriage index with Mrs. Hannah Leach ca 1899. The age of this Thomas Burton is off, but we don't know whether whether "our" Thomas Burton & Mary Jarvis Burton divorced sometime after 1893 or if Thomas Burton died. We don't know when Mary Jarvis Burton married UNKN Calbert or when Calbert died--------or when Mary Jarvis Burton Calbert died. I have my 3 requests, so I have to cut off the offer now. I apologize, but I'm hoping to have a small amount of time at the Union County courthouse the same day, so the number of requests I can handle is limited. Jason
I'll be heading to the McCracken County Courthouse on Friday. If anyone needs anything simple (marriage license lookup or something like that), I'll take the first three respondents. Please limit yourself to 1 or 2 items. I will reply to the first three request I get to acknowledge receipt. Jason

My friends - I was made aware a few days ago of budgetary cuts recommended for FY 2006 that will directly affect our ability to continue to see further advancements in digital conversion of all types of records(including those related to genealogy and history). This will affect the National Archives & Records Administration, as well as the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, both of which are mainstays in the efforts to preserve and make available our national, state and local records. Below is the news release on this matter. You can see that some very influential groups, including the American Society of Archivists, of which I was a member for a number of years, are reacting to this budget cut proposal. While I rarely suggest on any list which I host that our subscribers become involved through the petition route or by other means, this situation is one that must be corrected before it occurs. The means and sites to express your opinion, if you care to do so, is included in the message below. -B ==================================================================== The President's budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2006 slash or eliminate more than 150 federal programs. In that budget, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has been targeted to receive NO funding. This includes no funds for the grants program and no funds for staffing to support the NHPRC programs. It effectively eliminates NHPRC. The Council of State Historical Records Coordinators, the Society of American Archivists, and the National Association for Government Archivists and Records Administrators are working collaboratively to address this threat to NHPRC and NARA. Archivists across the U.S. are rallying to save NHPRC while also ensuring that NARA has sufficient funding to sustain its current programs and continue to advance in areas that benefit all archival repositories and every citizen of the United States As part of our efforts to continue to express to Congress interest in restoration of funding for NHPRC, we have created an online petition. Please consider signing this petition, and please forward it to any listservs, e-mail groups, or organizations and people you feel would be interested in helping with this effort. It is a quick and easy way for many people to assist. The petition will be forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary in late May. The petition can be access at: www.savearchives.org Click on the "petition" button. If you have not received a previous action alert on this issue, we encourage you to also write a letter to your members of Congress. For information on writing letters of support, see any of the following websites: www.savearchives.org www.coshrc.org www.archivists.org Thanks for your efforts to save this important program for archives! My friends - Our Easter recess now having passed, I want to return to a series I started months ago concerning those Confederate veterans(or their widows) who were disabled or indigent, and applied to receive a state pension for their service in the War Between the States. The history of the enabling legislation is interesting in itself, and I will send a special posting on that at some point as we go along. The veterans or widows shown below resided in McCracken County at the time of their applications. In the case of widows for whom the maiden name was given, it will be shown in brackets[ ]. I have no additional information on most of these people, but the KY Archives holds the original applications and microfilm of them is available for a small fee through the LDS Family History Centers. This constitutes Part 1 for McCracken County. Additional posts will bring the names of others who applied from McCracken County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Confederate Veterans/Widows Pension Applications Simmons, Samuel R. From Ancestry Daily News March 23, 2005 Fast Fact SSDI Updated through February 2005 The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) at Ancestry.com has been updated to include the most current information available, including deaths reported through February 2005. The Social Security Death Index on Ancestry.com is generated from the U.S. Social Security Administrations Death Master File. It contains the records of deceased persons who possessed Social Security numbers and whose death had been reported to the SSA. In most cases a report of death was made in connection with Social Security death benefits.
Can anyone tell me: a) if the Butler Malone funeral home still exists in Paducah, and b) whether they would have records going back to 1925? Thanks! Jason
My friends - Today, I am making two additional files available online. The first is a compilation of information on persons who were living in McCracken County at the time of the 1850 census, who gave Tennessee as their birthplace. That file may be found here: www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/McCracken1850CenTennBirths.htm In addition, I have placed online a file containing the text of the instructions to marshals and assistant marshals concerning the taking of the 1840 census. That file may be found here: www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/Census1840Instructions.htm More files will be coming online as we go along. -B ====================================================================
My friends - Some months ago, I offered a file which contained the enumerations made in the 1850 Slave Census, for McCracken County. There was a considerable amount of interest in this file at that time, and I have now placed it online for the use of our subscribers and others. The file can be found here: www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/McCrackenSlaveCen1850.htm I intend to place other slave census records online as time permits. I have received a number of inquiries from some of our subscribers, inquiring about my well being and the fact that my postings have been far fewer than normal in the past few months. I appreciate very much the good wishes of these folks, and I can report that all is well here. I have been absolutely inundated with work related to the recent move which my wife and I made to a new residence here. I decided - after 39 years of research - that my files *must* be reorganized into something that is usable by others, in the event that, at some future point, a bolt of lightning or other event causes me to "depart this life", as the old documents often stated. I am renewing my acquaintance with correspondence which I had with others back in the early 1960's. Since many of the senior people with whom I corresponded have long since passed on, their memories and genealogical material which were shared with me takes on an even greater need to ensure preservation. I have, in the past few years, heard from grown grandchildren of some of these people, and I have been able to share the correspondence which their grandparent and I exchanged so many years ago. So, a good deal of my time has been devoted to this work recently. My List postings will increase in number as time permits. -B ====================================================================

If anyone has the time and has access to the Paducah newpaper, I would Love it if you could find either or both Obituaries listed below. JESSE JAMES BURNS Died Jan 5, 1989 ******** JOHN HENRY BURNS Died March 15 , 1968 I would imagine the obituaries ran a day or two AFTER the dates of death that I have. Thank You for any help. If you are related to these BURNS , please email me.
I'm wondering if anyone out there can share information on the Rudolph Family, which seems to be centered on the Massac area. Right now, I have a death certificate for Elijah Rudolph (31 May 1862 - 22 May 1925), listing his parents as Johnson Rudolph and Elizabeth Sherrou. Elijah married a Martha Harris, probably abt 1884. Elijah was the father of my Gr-grandfather, Anthony Edward Rudolph. Jason
