Hi, I'm wondering if anyone on the list lives in McCracken County and would be willing to search for a couple of obtis where I have the exact date of death. I could do a small reimbursement for your time and copies. Thank you!
I have uploaded a genealogy file I made by converting the census transcription project at http://files.usgwarchives.org/ky/mccracken/census/1850/ into a GEDCOM file, which can be imported into any genealogy software (Open a new folder to import into.) and read by a variety of utilities. This free file is a finding aid for the transcription project. It is uploaded at http://gedcomlibrary.com/gedcoms/v209018.ged and linked at http://gedcomlibrary.com/vitals.html Tom Alciere

My friends - I want to take a moment to remind our subscribers about the Jackson Purchase Surnames Website, which is maintained by our good friend Mary-Ann Vandaveer. I was told, in a message from one of our subscribers yesterday, that, of eight e-mail addresses shown for one surname, half of them were no longer valid.. This is a great tool for networking between descendants, and it is important that we keep our current e-mail addresses on that site so that contacts can be made. Some of our newer subscribers may not even be familiar with this site. If you have registered your surname at the site, and are unsure if your current e-mail address is shown, or if you need to register there for the first time, please drop by the site at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyjpsurnames/index.htm Please allow a little time for any changes or additions to be made, since Mary-Ann handles these as they come in, and, often, after I make one of these announcements, a flood of changes or new registrations may come in, which take a few days to work through. There is a link on the site to which to send the information. In another area, in the months to come, I am going to begin digitizing microfilm of unpublished records from the Jackson Purchase region, and from other parts of the country, as well(such as the "feeder states" for Kentucky. If you have particular records that you would like to see digitized(for example, "Circuit Court Records for Calloway County in the 1870's", etc.), please let me know, via private e-mail, what your preferences would be. If enough of our subscribers have needs in the same groups of records, I'll prioritize them. And, by the way, the remainder of the Graves County Circuit Court Order Books in the 1853 - 1891 time frame will be high on the list for digitization. Many of you will recall that I digitized the first of these books(Order Book G - 1853-1856))some years ago, and made it available on CD-ROM. These are the only known complete surviving county-based public records for Graves County, before the horrendous fire in December of 1887, which destroyed 99% of everything in that courthouse. They had been misfiled at the KY Archives, where I discovered them in 2000, and had them all microfilmed. Just as a bit of a personal update for our charter List subscribers who may have been wondering if I had disappeared from the face of the earth<g>, I am still very much alive. I have devoted a lot of my time to teaching various genealogical subjects through our local college here, and I am considering the possibility of seeing if it would be feasible to do some online courses in county court and appellate court research, and research in law libraries. The latter two areas are tedious work, but can be gold mines of information if "pay dirt" is found. I still host 12 mail lists, of which the JP List remains the flagship list, with over 700 of the finest subscribers of any list to which I have belonged. I also host all of the other JP county lists, excepting only the Carlisle County List. Good hunting! -B ===============================================================================================================
I'm looking for a contact who is knowledgeable and willing to do some McCracken Co research for me for a reasonable fee. Primarily I need some marriages looked up mostly in the 1900s, some earlier. I also need a few obits from the Paducah newspapers and perhaps a few cemeteries (maybe Moody Cemetery) Anyone have a resource who could help me? (I told my cousin Terry Strick who sent me this I would forward it on for her to the list, please pass it on ! ) Thank you Robin Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Preservation by Betty L. Johnson Mt. Pleasant Cemetery has immediate need for preservation of approximately 100 historic monuments dating 1800's to early 1900's. These beautiful old significant monuments need repairs such as foundation work, resetting, cleaning etc. Some restoration repairs can wait until spring but some must be given attention before winter deteriorates and damages them further. Pictured are some examples of monuments that have broken off, become discolored, or have fallen over into the ground This picturesque, remarkable cemetery is located on a hill next to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, between Kevil, LaCenter, and Bandana, Ballard County, Kentucky. To some people, it is probably just a graveyard where the dead are buried...to others, it is a peaceful resting place for loved ones, friends, and neighbors from early ancestors to war hero, Morris Eugene Crain, Congressional Medal of Honor Winner. Mr. Boyce Pickett oversees the maintenance of the cemetery grounds, i.e. mowing and receiving donations from families who have loved ones buried there. Unfortunately, many of the families have either moved away or are no longer living. Therefore, there is not enough money available for the repairs and preservation of the cemetery. My interest is to establish a separate fund for cemetery preservation to restore the old monuments in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. I would like to organize a group of interested individuals to form a board and incorporate. This group would do business as Mount, Inc. (Many Old Unique Needy Tombstones). This organization is necessary to receive contributions and operate as a group of interested individuals in preserving our heritage documented in this historic cemetery. The Kentucky Department for Local Government (DLG) is currently offering Cemetery Preservation grants. These available grants are "matching grants", meaning that for every dollar requested, we must "match" with donations that can include cash, in-kind labor (volunteers), materials, or equipment use. It was announced in late September that the $38,000 grant money available for 2008, will be distributed among 120 counties in Kentucky from $500 to $2000, first come first serve. The recently appointed Ballard County Cemetery Board must submit our grant application to the DLG between Nov 1 and Dec 31, 2008. Awards will be announced in late January 2009. An estimate given from a professional preservationist for restoration of the approximately 100 monuments is between $7,000 and $8,000. Much of this work can be completed by volunteer laborers under the supervision of a monument company experienced in restoration and preservation. An organizational meeting will be set up within a week or two for individuals, including service organizations, interested in this worthy historic cemetery preservation project. If you can help in any way, please contact me at email blj2000ky@brtc.net or call cell 270-210-3538 after 4. p.m. I look forward to hearing from all.
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Helen Lucile PETTIT which was taken at the Riley and Cook Studio in Paducah, Kentucky. The photograph appears to a have been taken in the early 1900's with Helen likely about 1 year old at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information: Helen Lucille PETTIT b. 31 Jul 1906 in Metropolis, IL, married Adolph Byron BURNETT (b. 3 Apr 1906 in Peyette, ID) on 28 Jun 1928 in Mesa, ID and together they had a son, Robert Byron BURNETT b. 6 Apr 1937 in Caldwell, ID.. Helen died 27 May 1976 in Richmond, VA. Census records provide the following: 1910 census of Paducah, KY: Edward J. PETTIT, age 30, married 4 years, born IL, parents born Canada/KY, a Druggist Lillian R. PETTIT, wife, age 24, married 4 years, 2 children/2 living, born OH, parents born OH/WV Helen L. PETTIT, dau, age 3, born IL Edward J. PETTIT Jr., son, age 1 year and 9 months, born KY 1920 census of Paducah, KY: Edward J. PETTIT, age 39, born IL, parents born Canada/KY, in Drug Business Edna R. PETTIT, wife, age 33, born OH, parents born OH/WV Helen L. PETTIT, dau, age 13, born IL Edward J. PETTIT, son, age 11, born KY I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this beautiful old photograph can be returned to the care of the family.
