    1. [KYMCCRAC] Administratavia - List Guidelines
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Over the past couple of weeks, on various lists which I host, there have been postings appear which are off-topic and are, therefore, in violation of the list guidelines which are in place, and which all subscribers receive when they subscribe to one of the lists. Given the fact that we are currently living in very uncertain times, on a worldwide scale, and all of us are perhaps a little "on-edge" as to what may be facing us in the weeks to come, I think now is a good time to restate these guidelines, and remind all of us that they are in place, and are there for a reason. There are major national issues - some of them very controversial - before all of us right now, and they are all important, but they are not for our discussion or debate here. First, we do try to stay focused and "on-topic". For the JacksonPurchase-L List, "on-topic" means discussion about the history and genealogy of the families of the 8 counties in the region which carried the JP name. We do not discuss other counties in KY, TN or IL, except perhaps in a passing reference noting that a family may have lived in some other county before moving into, or after leaving, the JP region. For the county lists, "on-topic" means discussion of families and historical aspects of the individual counties themselves. Stories and other family "lore" need to go to the KYJacksonPurchase-Lore-L List, which was created for that purpose. Discussions about current national issues, or current religious or political subject matter, are off-topic. Second, virus warnings should not be posted to the lists. About 98% of them have turned out to be hoaxes over the years. If someone has a concern about a virus situation that he/she deems so critical that it is felt it should be posted to a list, send the information to me. I will investigate it, and if it proves to be an immanent danger, I will post the warning myself. Third, we try to stay away from "chatting" on the lists. This is perhaps a little more critical on a larger list, such as the JP List, but it can sometimes occur on smaller lists, as well. Once a posting has been made inquiring about a surname or individual, further back-and-forth conversation between contacts that are made should be done via private e-mail. We have built up an enormous "contact network" among the various county lists, and within the JP List especially, as is evidenced by the "thank-you" posts we see from time to time, reflecting that folks are always willing to help, and we have a lot of family expertise among the subscribers on these lists. I encourage the postings of surnames on which our subscribers are working, about every three months, so that new subscribers can contact, by private e-mail, those folks who are working on the same families. Additionally, we have the JP Surnames website, which contains the e-mail addresses of individuals cross-referenced to the family surnames on which they are working, which should also be a primary source to consult from time to time. The URL for that is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kyjpsurnames/ I do over to that site fairly frequently myself. I think it is a great resource. If you do not have your address posted there, and would like to have it included, there is a link to the webmaster on the main page. The information can be sent to her and she will get it posted. Finally, there is a hard, set-in-stone guideline which prohibits "flaming" - the posting of inflammatory, critical, insulting, obscene/pornographic or personal attacks on a list. The same is true for such messages sent privately to list subscribers as a result of posts which a subscriber has made to a list. If a subscriber receives such a message from another subscriber in private e-mail, that message should be sent to me - please do not respond to it yourself - and I will deal with it. Those who engage in deliberate flaming will be removed from the list(s) and will not be allowed to return. We have far too many good things that need doing, and flaming does absolutely nothing good at all. We have very little of this sort of thing that occurs, and, often, when it does occur, it was due to circumstances in which the actual subscriber may not have even sent the message, in cases where others have access to the computer in question. If cases of flaming do appear, please let me deal with it - and I *will* do so as quickly as it comes to my attention. Please do not send messages of outrage to the poster - or to the list - the person being "lambasted" may not be the individual who sent the offending message. These guidelines are generally those used by most RootsWeb based list hosts. They are not, in my view, "hard-nosed" or restrictive, but rather just some common sense things we need to do to maintain, and continue to have, productive and on-topic and focused postings. I am always open to suggestions or thoughts about these, as long as they are constructive and presented in a thoughtful, diplomatic manner. That's the "reminder notice" for this quarter - let's get back to what we do best - hunting down elusive forebears. -B ====================================================================

    1. [KYMCCRAC] JAMES C. LONG and EVA BEST
    2. Judy Koehl
    3. I am interested in finding the history of James C. Long, the proprietor of a livery stable in Paducah from at least 1850-1880, and his first wife, Eva (or Evalandes) Best, in McCracken County, and their ancestors before that. I am descended from the marriage of their daughter, Julia Carson Long (b. August 1842 in Paducah, d. 19 June 1877 at the home of a relative in Jackson, TN) and James William Cole, an Englishman who married Julia when she was 16, in 1858. While I have much information about his family on the Isle of Wight, and in the United States after Julia died, I have very little about her ancestors or siblings, and I have never done research in Kentucky. J. W. Cole moved his family of nine children to Florida and then to Georgia after his wife's death, so there is unlikely to be anyone from the family living there today. Is anyone else interested in James C. Long or his first wife, Eva Best? I know from the 1880 census, when James C. Long had another wife (he is said to have had three in all) that he was probably born in Virginia in 1812, as were both his parents. My father said that he was fairly neutral during the Civil War, until the Union forces came and took some of his prized horses. I know that there were a number of children from his first marriage, including perhaps twins. I do have at least one photo of Julia, as well as letters she and her husband wrote to his relatives on the Isle of Wight during the War which were returned to us in the 1950's by relatives there, as the Coles seem to have kept in contact fairly frequently, even though J. W. Cole never went back to visit. All suggestions appreciated! Judy Koehl

    1. [KYMCCRAC] McCracken County - Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1861 - Births - Part 22
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are moving back over to McCracken County to continue our review of the Vital Statistics Birth records for that county in the period 1852-1861. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually contain the date of birth, the name of the father and maiden name of the mother, and, in some cases, the location within McCracken County where the birth occurred. Your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is very much appreciated. Tomorrow, we will move to Ballard County for the data posting that was postponed from last week. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1861 - Births - Part 22 (M)=Male (F)=Female (NGG)=No Gender Given (AA)=African-American (ILL)=Illegitimate Roark, Elizabeth Jane Roark, Albert D. 3. Paducah's earliest cemetery was at 4th Street between Washington and Clark. When the City acquired Oak Grove Cemetery in 1847 remains were removed from the 4th Street area to Oak Grove, (however when the new city hall was built around 1964 they uncovered some bones). The Oak Grove section had been used 10 years prior to the city buying it. There are 6 volumes of McCracken County Cemetery Records. Most of the cemeteries have been copied, there are some small family plots that weren't found when they were being copied. Only part of Oak Grove has been done. All six of these can be ordered from Don Simmons. I checked for Dr. Andrew J. Watson and could find nothing on him in any of the cemetery books. The only thing I found was in "Oak Grove CemeteryVol. 6" Unmarked Graves 1811-1979 there is an Unknown Watson, date of death 1800's, age ?, in old addition, Section N Lot 161.

I was able to see the plot book and who bought the grave sites as far back as when my grandfather bought a family plot in the 1920s. This was Oak Grove. Hope this will help. Julia (Wright) Molitz

    1. [KYMCCRAC] KY Cases at Law - KY Court of Appeals - McCracken Co. - Thompson vs. Beadles, et al. - 1878
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are going to look at another Kentucky Court of Appeals case. This one originated in the McCracken County Common Pleas Court and was heard by the Court of Appeals in the January Term, 1878. As a side note, and before getting into the details of this case, I will mention that I have today assumed the host responsibility for the KYMcCrac-L mail list, which is the county list for McCracken County. I now host all of the county lists for the JP region, with the exception of Carlisle County. Also, those of you with requests still pending from yesterday's data posting will receive responses to those later tonight, or before the end of the day tomorrow. I have had an unusually busy day today, with some interruptions that caused loss of computer time. But I will get those items to you as rapidly as possible. Our Appeals Court case today involved another example of how valuable - and often interesting - some of these items can be to our research. In this case, there was a question of jurisdiction involving whether an equity court can recognize a will as being valid, when the law directs that such authority is apparently invested in the county courts. In this case, Alice Thompson appealed a ruling of the McCracken Court of Common Pleas, which had established as a valid Will, a portion of a letter that Mrs. Thompson's son, Andrew P., had written to them prior to his death, based upon the allegation that it was fraudulently suppressed. The Appeals Court ruled that the Court of Common Pleas did not have original jurisdiction in the matter and could not establish the portion of the letter in question as a valid Will, without action from the McCracken County Court admitting the alleged Will to probate. The case was remanded to the lower court with directions to sustain the objection of Mrs. Thompson. If we were researching this family, it would certainly be of great interest to us to know what was in that letter that Andrew P. Thompson wrote to his parents before his death. Since the KY Court of Appeals case files are generally intact from 1865, it would be possible to obtain the case file and it is likely that a copy of the letter would be contained within that file. I plan to try to obtain this case file, in order to review the documents contained in it, and I will keep you posted on what I find. It is an unusual case, and the fact that the mother wished to avoid having the letter admitted as a valid Will, peaks my interest in it. As is now customary, there will be no data posts to the JP List tomorrow or on the weekend. Since tomorrow is Friday, our booksellers may have some items to offer, in compliance with the guidelines set up for "Booksellers' Friday". I will hopefully have a report for you early next week on the Graves County Order Book G CD beta testing. I have had some preliminary reports from some of our testers and things seem to be going well. -B ====================================================================

    2. Bill Utterback
    3. I have today assumed the responsibility of host of the KYMcCrac-L list. I also host the KYJacksonPurchase-L List, covering all 8 of the counties in the Jackson Purchase area, and all of the county lists for that region, with the exception of the Carlisle County List. I am sure many of you are acquainted with me through your membership on the JP or other county lists in that region. This List will be handled by the same guidelines as those that apply to the lists which I host, and which I will post here in a day or two. I will be sending any posts which I may make to the KYJacksonPurchase-L list which pertain to McCracken County to this List, also. I look forward to working with all of you, and if I can be of service, please do not hesitate to call upon me. -BU ====================================================================
