I have a copy of a letter written from Paducah August 18 1888 which says: "Mr. Jones, Judge Gilbert has been in bed for a long time with inflammatory rheumatism and that case was not tried at the last term of court, but will come on at the September (1888) term. It is uncertain how it will go but if it goes against us we will take it to the court of appeals, and if necessary to the Supreme court of the United States. Yours jc Sgn. G. Faxon" I would like to know what this case is about and what the end result was. Any information, help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Laurel A. Dickinson Castle Rock, WA

My friends - Several subscribers have asked recently about information for burials in the Newton Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in McCracken County. I have located this cemetery in my "miscellaneous files" on the several hundred old 5 inch floppies that I mention here from time to time. I have converted it, and it is now ready for distribution. This is a large cemetery, with about 500-600 known burials, and it remains an active cemetery. The earliest birth year that I found was 1808, although there may be individuals buried there who were born earlier, as there are some illegible markers and some markers with no names. Surnames found in this cemetery include Kinsey, Ballentine, Smith, Gates, Roberts, Scoggin, Pugh, Fondaw, Grief(many), Burchett, Price, Glisson, Cunningham, Lindsey, Rudolph, Brewer, Stegner, Cumbee, Matlock, Milner, Mertcalf, Chumbler, Pendley, Holt, Helm, Cooper, Garrett, Thompson, Wood, Matthews, Wallace, McKinney, Holly, Jeter, Jett, Durrett, Stigall, Craven, Hodges, Simmons, Goldsby, Cannada, Allcock, Covington, Crawford, Wiley, Pitt, Haselwood, Burnley, Casey, Joiner, Newbill, Leasor, Myers, Brame, Holliday, Scott, Flint, Tomlin, Graham, Gamble, Wray, Oates, Stearns, Alison, Throgmorton, Ogilvie, Elrod, Pierce, Timmons, Williams, Lanier, Sullivan, Rogers, Morehead, Bass, Billington, McCorckle, Helton, Morrison, Hutton, Reesor, Boren, Cox, Terry, Powell, Ragland, Harper, Hunter, Barton, Shelton, Ray, Arnn, Long, Farmer, Skinner, Earnshaw, Gregory, Drury, Seaton, Duncan, Warford, Hook, Lynn, Foley, Day, Harris, Hankins, Scoggin, House, Edwards, Allcock, Thomas, Lewis, Feezor, Pennebaker, Pittman, Dowdy, Carroll, Wren, Dunn, McElya, Abernathy, Maupin, Weig, Anderson, Keel, Landing, Burnett, Fortson, Alexander, Pippin, Green, Steele, Pack, Austin, Yarborough, Klepfer, Dew, Clark, Snyder, Cannon, French, Cook and Turner. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken lists can obtain a copy of this file by sending a request directly to me. The file is available in Plain Text and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. The file will be sent as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF is specified. Due to the size of this file, it cannot be sent in the message body of an e-mail message("straight e-mail"). It must be sent as an attachment. The entire file will be sent. Time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract data about individual families. We will be resuming our regular schedule of data posts tomorrow. I hope everyone had a pleasant holiday weekend. -B =====================================================================
My friends - As we move into the Labor Day holiday weekend, I have been able to find some time to convert one of the files contained on the old 5 inch floppies that I call my "miscellaneous files", and it is now ready for distribution. This file contains the 1850 slave census for McCracken County. The file contains some 200+ names of slave owners, and the ages of the male and female slaves which they hold. Unfortunately, the census did not require that the slaves' names be recorded. Owners' surnames include Garrett, Chapman, Herring, Johnston, Stephens, Smith, Jones, Vanmeter, Venable, Boone, Anderson, Violett, Harvey, Pell, Enders, North, Lawson, Kelley, Fisher, Rasor, Smedley, Grose, Geno, Elam, Dinwiddie, Harner, Matthews, Bronson, Harris, Jacobs, Rogers, Long, Wallace, Small, Grave, Gaither, Cish, Gardner, Lett, Joyce, Hendren, Lane, Crockett, Mahan, Lewis, Davis, Boone, Hurt, Riggs, Bonuin, Given, Maurons, Slee, Singleton, McCarty, Sanner, Finch, Graham, P'Pool, Dunn, Ratcliffe, Campbell, Bayne, Ogilvie, Ritter, Husbands, Saunders, Cutler, Crozier, Woolfolk, Flournoy, Ritter, Fuller, Rankin, Marshall, Norton, Lawrison, Farrar, Patton, Thornton, Woods, Rogers, Searcy, Grimes, Best, Castleman, Donnell, Kimble, Case, Larmon, Barbour, Yeatman, Kearney, Matlock, Hearn, Coffee, Rayland, Hazelwood, Lacy, Holland, Birrell, Patterson, Wyley, Wright, Hobbs, Rennick, Durrett, Brown, Settle, Thornberry, Quisenberry, Huntsaker, Williams, Robb, Rabb, Morrow, Alcock, Titsworth, Rudolph, Stanley, Moore, Choice, Lay, Hinton, Boswell, Sherrell, Grundy, Wilcox, Craig, Hall, Stovall, McElya, Parker, Hughes, Carruthers, Perry, Blanton, Linzey, Young, Harper, McNeal, Broyles, Enders, Grigsby, Rouse, Calhoun, Lancashire, Cowling, Lilly, Terrell, Rollison, McClure, Baleu, Ross, Shinn, Milliken, Morgan, Hynes, Neal, Starr, Rice, Canada and Goar. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken lists can obtain this file by sending a request directly to me. Please request the "McCracken Slave Census" file. This file is available only in rich text format (RTF), or in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Because it contains a table that was originally constructed in RTF, that format must be used in order to maintain the table attributes. Any word processor can read an RTF file, so this should not present any problems for anyone in opening the file. The file will be sent as an RTF attachment to an e-mail message unless PDF format is specified. Because of the size of this file, and the table attributes, this file cannot be sent in the body of an e-mail message, so "straight e-mailing", without attachment, of the file will not be possible in this case. If time permits, I will convert another file over this holiday weekend. -B =====================================================================

Hi, am wondering if anyone out there is willing to do a look up for a cemetery. Am trying to find out where Margaret Isabel Wright Deboe is buried. She passed 3-10-1972 in McCracken Co. She lived there all her life and I am sure she is buried there. Also looking for burial of her mother Helen Corine Wright Curtis, passed 6-1-1982, probably in the same cemetery, thanks, Karyn
My friends - As I continue my visit to the JP region, we are going to look today at another biography from the "Memorial Record of Western Kentucky" series. Our subject today is Edmond W. Hubbard of McCracken County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Edmond W. Hubbard, attorney-at-law, of Paducah, was born in Caldwell county, Kentucky, on a farm, January 29, 1866, and is a son of James P. and Helen (Nichols) Hubbard, both natives of Caldwell county, Kentucky. The paternal grandfather was Butler Hubbard, also a native of Caldwell county, and his father was a native of Virginia, while the Nichols family came from North Carolina. The father of Edmond W. Hubbard was a farmer, and spent his life in Caldwell county and was successful in his work. In 1863 he enlisted in the Forty-eighth Kentucky Infantry, Union army, and served until the close of the war. His death occurred in January, 1901, aged sixty-six years. The mother still lives and makes her home on the old homestead, aged about sixty-seven years. The father was a Republican, and he and his wife early joined the Methodist church. They reared a family of eleven children, and gave them excellent educations, although they themselves had been denied that privilege. Edmond W. Hubbard was reared upon a farm and attended the country schools until he was seventeen years of age, when he entered Princeton (Kentucky) Collegiate Institute, where he spent two years. At the age of nineteen years he began teaching country schools in Caldwell county, and taught and attended schools alternately for some six or seven years, thus gaining a very liberal education. He became deputy postmaster at Princeton in 1892 and held that office for two years. In 1893 he was elected city judge of Princeton, and retained that office for three years. During the intervening years he attended the Louisville University of Law, from which he was graduated April 24, 1896, and, returning to Princeton, practiced his profession until 1901. In 1896 he was appointed master commissioner of Caldwell county, and discharged the duties of that office until March 1, 1898, when he was appointed deputy United States internal revenue collector, and in April, 1901, when he was transferred to the Paducah district, he removed to this city. May 1, 1903, Mr. Hubbard resigned the position of United States internal revenue collector, to again take up the practice of law, which he had suspended on coming to Paducah in April of 1901. He opened a law office in Paducah and thus resumed his profession. In December, 1901, he was married to Miss Cora Leibel, of Paducah, and one child has been born of this marriage, Elizabeth. Mr. Hubbard is a Republican in his political opinions. He has been a Master Mason since he was twenty-one years of age, and is a very energetic, enterprising young man." -Memorial Record of Western Kentucky Louisville: Lewis Publishing Co., 1904 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I got this email from one of my lists the yesterday. Aol has a new spam blocking tool where you highlight unwanted mail, then click on a "block" button. it then sends a report to Aol, and blocks any email from that address. Aol has sued several people as well as filed criminal charges. Sound great right??? Apparently, it has it's flaws. People have been blocking mail from the rootsweb discussion lists, instead of unsubscribing when they are no longer interested. Here's the email I received: Several days ago AOL began blocking all emails sent by USGenNet's server. : This means that list subscribers who have AOL addresses can't receive the : list posts. Also, USGenNet account holders with AOL addresses can't use : their email aliases to forward their site's mail to their AOL address. This : holds true for all domains hosted by USGenNet, including ALHN and AHGP main : sites, USGenWeb Census Project, Combs Families, and TNGenWeb just to name a : few. : All mail originating from our server to any AOL address bounces back with : this message: : : "The information presently available to AOL indicates this server is : generating high volumes of member complaints from AOL's member base. I called AOL Saturday and they specified what they felt warranted their : block, and I passed the information on to Jim Cole, our SysAdmin. Our server : is not open to indescriminate use or abuse and is very secure. : : Since I was told by AOL that the block will not ever be lifted unless : USGenNet corrects the "problems" they mentioned, it seems unlikely : that the block will be removed any time soon and those affected should act : accordingly. : : We are continuing our efforts to get the block removed, and will keep you : informed. : : Ginger Cisewski : President, USGenNet.Org : Melissa Foster-Rose "My Family Tree is Full of NUTS!!! www.angelfire.com/ky3/nuts FOR MORE INFO, SEE ABOVE WEBPAGE!! My friends - I had planned to move down to Graves County for today's post, but because of having received numerous inquiries about the Smith births in the McCracken County Vital Statistics birth records that I had said, in yesterday's posting, would be forthcoming at some point, I have decided to go ahead and post those today. The *entire record* for each birth is shown below in the listing - I have no additional information on these births beyond what is given. Tomorrow, we will have a biography of a Graves County individual from one of our several resources("mug books", as they are commonly called) that we are exploring. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Vital Statistics Records - Smith Births - 1852 - 1861 Smith, Ann, African-American, born 15 June 1852 in Christian Co., dau of ----- & Sophier --- Smith, ------, female, born 6 Aug 1852 in Christian Co., dau of George M. I have a "General Affidavit" in the matter of minor children of Elijah L. Jones Deceased, Lyon County, KY. Martha A. Campbell Jones who died 30 Jan 1901 at Oaks, McCracken County, KY. That Sarah A. (Jones)Housapple stepdaughter of Martha Jones has the minor children of Martha. Cordelia and Dora are the only minor children under the age of 16 at the time of their mothers death and are living with Sarah. She signed with a X and some signed it Sarah A. Housapple. I have tried to find Sarah and no such luck. Also R.N. Allcock is Guardian. I have also checked Graves County. I cannot find the name Housapple. I have tried sounddex and almost every way I think you could spell it. I hope someone out there can help me. I live in the state of Washington with limited resources. Thank you so much for any help. My friends - Today we are returning to McCracken County to continue our review of the Vital Statistics birth records for that county in the 1852-1861 time frame. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken lists can obtain the full dataset for a birth shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually contain the date of birth, gender of the child if not obvious, and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother. In some cases, the exact location within the county where the birth occurred is shown. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. The is a large number of births for the surname "Smith" in this group, and those will be provided in a separate message in the near future. Looking for a copy of a newspaper write up about "Speedy" who died back in the 1930s and was buried in the 1990s. Or to learn more about "Speedy". I understand that Speedy was walking across a river bridge at Paducah, fell in and drowned. He > was embalmed in a special way waiting for his family to claim the body. At the funeral home he** was standing up in a > hall closet with only a pair > of pants on. Recently a short program on TV about him but showed him with a tux > on. Hello and I was wondering if anyone had information on the folks that were buried in the Bauld Knob Cemetary in the extreme western part of Mccracken county near the Ballard county line area off Kelley road in Kevil? I have been told that alot of the areas earliest settlers were buried in this cemetary and are intermarried within many of the local families, including the Holts. I kept the article out the local newspaper and ran across it tonight, if anyone knows any or some of the folks buried here please let me know. Thank you Robin
I have several photocopied pages from a book that I found at the McCracken County Public Library in Paducah several years ago. The book contains brief biographical sketchs of prominent citizens of the county. I copied what appears to be a title page which has a picture of the statue of Chief Paduke in Paducah with the word "PADUCAH" written over the top and 1894 written underneath. Unfortunately this is all of the "source documentation" that I have. Can anyone tell me any other information about this book - correct title, publisher, date published, where I can buy a copy, etc? I'm looking for my uncle, Maurice Evans, my father's (Thomas Evans) half brother, of Paducah, KY. Maurice Evans would have born about 1931-33 and was in McCracken County, KY, when his mother Opal Louise (Jackson) Evans died November 4, 1956 in Paducah. She is buried in Graves County, KY. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Maurice Evans, please either contact me or contact him and let him know I'm looking for him. Thanks, Tom Evans, Jr., 8435 16th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55425.
Hello List, Has anyone viewed the FHL film of Virginia Nobles Scrapbook? It is to contain birth and deaths in Paducah from 1857-1920 with newspaper clippings etc. I am hoping that it is a good source to look through to find family. Also is there any source for wills or probate in Paducah from 1850-1900? I do not find anything filmed by the FHL Thanks Laurie
My friends - Today, we are moving up to McCracken County to continue our review of the Vital Statistics Marriage records for that county. Since we do have some new subscribers, I should probably mention again that these early vital statistics records are, at best, very incomplete and often inaccurate. Only about 40%-50% of the actual births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the counties in these early years ever found their way into the VS records. So any information found in these records should be carefully considered, especially if another source has conflicting data, and the absence of a birth, marriage or death from these early records should not necessarily be taken as a firm indication that the event did not occur. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken lists can obtain the full dataset for a marriage shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets usually include the names of groom and bride, the date of the marriage, the age of the parties, where each was born, and, in some cases, the location within the county where the marriage occurred. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. My friends - Today, we are beginning a new series for McCracken County. Counties in KY were required, at an early day, to establish a "poor house" (later known, more politely, as a "county sanitarium"). Associated with these poor houses there was usually an adjacent cemetery, in which were buried those who died in the poor house, or died after being taken to a hospital from the poor house. These poor house cemeteries are a challenge for family historians, since records on who was buried in them can often be slim or non-existent, and rarely were grave markers placed, other than small footstones or some other very inexpensive marker, if anything at all. We do have some records for burials beginning in the early part of the 20th century in the McCracken County Sanitarium/Poor House. We will begin in 1909(there are no extant records prior to 1909) and continue to about 1925. I will probably not post burials beyond 1925 or 1930, as we would be touching the edge of living memory if we go further. I have the records up to about 1965 and can check a later sanitarium death record, should there be a valid need. I would need to be contacted via private e-mail for that. Subscribers to the McCracken and JP lists can obtain the full dataset for a person shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. These datasets vary widely in their content, from containing a good deal of information to having almost none. All of them have the date of death; most of them have the place of death(such as "Riverside Hospital", "County Sanitarium", and, sometimes, an exact city address where the death occurred); some have a part or all of the birth date, some only have the age, while some have neither; a few show where the person was born; all show ethnicity(many are African-American) and some show the cause of death, as well as whether a Coroner's Inquest was ordered. Some also show the row and grave number in which the person was buried. Parents are usually *not* shown for the infants, although there are some that may read, "Infant child of Jane Smith, etc." As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to be with the request is appreciated.
