    1. [KYMCCRAC] HODGES - THOMPSON Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Martin & Carrie HODGES taken at the Allison & Moore Studio in Paducah, Kentucky. The photograph was probably taken in the 1880's with Martin and Carrie 3-6 year of age at the time. In addition to their names it is also noted on the back of the photograph that Carrie later married Gene THOMPSON. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Any information or stories on these folks is most welcome. We have been trying to find out some history on the home. Thank you Robin

    1. [KYMCCRAC] Jackson Purchase Vignettes - McCracken Co. - William Harrison Reeves
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Since I am travelling this week and using my laptop for communication, this week's postings will be entirely from the Jackson Purchase Vignettes series. Our subject for today's post is William Harrison Reeves of McCracken Co. Please hold any requests from data posts of last week until I return home at the end of this week, at which time I will again have access to my resource material and can respond to them. I failed to mention yesterday when I posted the announcement from Sherri Hall about the KY Vital Record Project that any information or questions should be directed to her at: ldrbelties@earthlink.net -B ========================================================================= Jackson Purchase Vignettes - McCracken County - William Harrison Reeves "William Harrison Reeves stands pre-eminent among the energetic citizens of Paducah. His parents removed from Halifax County, Va., and settled near Richmond, in Madison County, Ky., in the early part of the present century, and there William H. was born, in 1814.. George Reeves, his father , was a soldier under Gen. Harrison in the war of 1812, and in consequence of his admiration for his veteran commander, gave the name to his son. William H. was left an orphan when a mere lad, and also dependent on his own efforts for sustenance, which prevented his obtaining even a common school education. His first effort at self-support was a position on a keel boat on the Green River. When eighteen years old he came to the Purchase and located in what is now Ballard County. Having an elder brother (Jesse B.) in that vicinity, he made his home with him until the brother's death, which occurred a few years later. Here William H. engaged in the lumber traffic for a time, then operated a wood-yard for a period of six years, and then opened a small general store in the interior of Ballard County. After four years he sold this business, and in 1840 was made county constable, from which time he was for many years engaged in the official business of the county, either in the office of constable or sheriff. Though beginning life without means, he soon accumulated a handsome fortune, and gradually developed into one of the most substantial farmers and traders of western Kentucky. Mr. Reeves has ever been noted for his stern and unflinching integrity and fidelity to any public or private trust, and while he has been largely connected with the public weal of his section, he has been also entrusted with the adjustment of many private estates and with the guardianship of orphaned children. For many years, he has been a member of the Masonic order and of the I.O.O.F. He was first married in Ballard County, in 1843, to Miss Penelope White, daughter of Rev. Willis White, now of Clinton, Ky. She died in February, 1879, leaving a family of seven children: Mary A., wife of Dr. Charles Hinkle, of Ballard County; George W., now of Montana; Susan J., wife of Hon William J. Pucket; W. T. Reeves, a lawyer of Blandville; Martha, wife of W.W. Morris; Fannie B., wife of William O. Coffin, of Illinois, and Robert L. Reeves, of Paducah. Mr. Reeves was married to his present wife, Mrs. Fannie Marrs, of Paris, Tenn., in 1881. In 1880, Mr. Reeves retired from his farm to Paducah, and there effected a business connection with T.F. Terrell, under the firm name of Terrell and Reeves, and as such they are doing an extensive business in the tobacco trade." 1. [KYMCCRAC] Thomas Myers and Mary Ann Collins Family
    2. Jo Pace
    3. Hello I am looking for information on THOMAS MYERS, born about 1828 and MARY ANN COLLINS, born about 1833 in Kentucky. MARY ANN COLLINS was a sister to my gg grandmother, ELIZABETH REBECCA COLLINS who was married to JACOB VONDACH (FONDAW) from France. According to my research, THOMAS MYERS was probably married before he married MARY ANN COLLINS. I found a marriage record for THOMAS MYERS and MARY ANN COLLINS MARKS in McCracken County October 14, 1867. MARY ANN COLLINS was possibly married before she married THOMAS MYERS to JACOB MARKS (MARX). Based on the 1870 McCracken County, Kentucky census, THOMAS had at least two children prior to his marriage to MARY ANN. MARY ELLEN MYERS, born about 1852 who married THOMAS HENRY ELROD and JOHN MYERS who was born about 1855. THOMAS and MARY ANN had at least two children together, LAURA MYERS, born about 1869 and CHARLES THOMAS MYERS born about 1870. Who was THOMAS MYERS married to prior to his marriage to MARY ANN COLLINS? Also, I would like to know MARY ANN COLLINS parents. All I know is that her mother's name was Mary ?, and her father died in 1838. THOMAS MYERS died between 1870 and 1880 and I do not find MARY ANN COLLINS MYERS after the 1880 Ballard County, Kentucky census. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to share anything I have. 1. [KYMCCRAC] New Series - McCracken County - Commonwealth Court Cases - 1836 - Part 1
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are beginning a new series which will deal with what are termed "Commonwealth Cases" in McCracken County. These are criminal court cases in which the Commonwealth of Kentucky acted as prosecutor. The case would be styled, for example, as "Commonwealth of Kentucky vs. John Smith". The names in the listing below are the defendants in these cases in McCracken County, as taken from the docket index. Unfortunately, other than the year in which the case was brought, there is no other information in the index as to what the charge may have been, or anything further concerning the case. As a result, I have *no* further information beyond what is shown below. Nevertheless, this sort of information is useful in some situations in placing an individual between census years. If you see a name in which you have an interest and would like to obtain the case file connected with that individual, and which will contain the petition, subpoenas, verdict, and often some depositions, the Kentucky Department for Libraries & Archives is the repository which holds these case files for McCracken County in this period. Criminal case files are somewhat less likely to contain family information than are civil case files, but one never knows what may appear in one of these files. I once examined such a file that came out of Fulton County, in which am an was charged with polygamy. He had three wives - one in Fulton Co., one in Cairo, IL and another in Massac Co. IL. The file contained the love letters he had written all three of them, the dates of marriages for each, the names and dates of birth of all of his children by the three wives, the maiden names of the wives and who their parents were, as well as other information on the husband's family. That was an unusual case, of course, but it does show what can sometimes be found in these criminal case files. Feel free to contact me off list if there are questions about accessing the case files. Tomorrow, we will move to Graves County. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Commonwealth Court Cases - 1836 - Part 1 [et al. = "and others"] Commonwealth of Kentucky vs.: A. 3. Listers: Can anyone do a look-up for Cynthia Ann Taylor? She was born 22 January 1851, and died in McCracken County 1 December 1924. I would be very interested to find out where she is buried, and if there might be an obituary. She was married to Hartwell Marable Taylor 18 August 1869, and it looks as though she may have moved from Trigg County, Kentucky to McCracken County after her husband died. Perhaps she was living with one of her children. Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Alice in Arizona

    1. [KYMCCRAC] Hartwell and Cynthia A. McWaters Taylor
    2. Alice N
    3. Hartwell Marable and Cynthia A. McWaters Taylor are/were my gggrand uncle and aunt. According to my information, Hartwell died and was buried in Trigg County, KY on 3 February 1885, but I have my doubts. However, Cynthia Ann is said to have died in McCracken County in February of 1900. Hartwell's father was Forest "Farris" W. Taylor; his mother Susan Vaughn from Montgomery County, TN. Cynthia's parents were: Samuel C. McWaters and Eliza M. Boatright. Hartwell's siblings were Elizabeth F., Samuel William, Susan Mary Jane, Zachariah, Irene Rebecca, Darthular Tennessee and Forest W. Jr. Cynthia's siblings were: Susan F., William M., Mary Louisa, and Livingston F. McWaters, and Thomas Tennessee Watson - (must have been a stepbrother.) Is anyone familiar with this family? I would be very interested to talk to you and share information. Thanks in advance. Alice in Arizona

    1. [KYMCCRAC] McCracken County - Vital Statistics Records - Marriages - 1852-1859 & Various Other Years - Part 37
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - As we resume posts today, we are going back to McCracken County to continue our review of the vital statistics marriage records for that county. These records cover the1852-1859 period, primarily, but there are scattered records for 1874-1878, as well as 1893-1894 and 1903-1904. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken lists can obtain the detailed information on a marriage shown in the listing below by sending a request to me. The information detail on the marriages usually includes the date of marriage, ages of groom and bride, and where each was born. As always, your continuing assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with the request is appreciated. As an aside, from time to time I am reminded about the need to always look a little askance at family stories and legends. There is often a fragment of truth in those stories, but, over the generations, they often lose much of their truthful beginnings, since storytelling was an art form in the 19th century and those who repeated the family lore were expected to embellish it to some degree to enhance the drama. I wonder how many of us have a mental picture of, for example, the famous Kentuckian Daniel Boone as a tall, muscular man, holding a musket. Those of us old enough to remember Fess Parker as Daniel Boone on the old television series can also recall the words to the theme song of that series: "Daniel Boone was a man; yes, a big man; with an eye like an eagle and as tall as a mountain was he." Daniel Boone was actually 5 feet 8 inches tall, with red hair, and weighed between 150 and 195 pounds at various times in his life, according to his son Nathan. His short and perhaps a little heavy stature did not prevent him from performing phenomenal feats, however, and most other men of his time knew better, regardless of his stature, than to take him on in a fight. But the true nature of his physique is a far cry from the legends. Tomorrow, we will move to Calloway County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Vital Statistics Records - Marriages - 1852-1859 & Other Years - Part 37 Smith, Albert Lovelace, Josie Proctor, john W. 1. [KYMCCRAC] William Collins Kentucky to Illinois
    2. Jo Pace
    3. I am researching the family of WILLIAM COLLINS, born about 1828 in Tennessee. His sister, ELIZABETH REBECCA COLLINS, born about 1819 also in Tennessee, was my gg grandmother. ELIZABETH was married to JACOB VONDACH (FONDAW) and she died in 1857 in McCracken County, Kentucky. I would like to know the father of these two, William and Elizabeth. I do know their mothers name was MARY and in 1842 she married for the second time JEREMIAH ELROD in McCracken County. In 1860 census for Massac County, Illinois, I found WILLIAM COLLINS age 34 with his wife Hannah age 33. Next door to WILLIAM is his mother MARY ELLROD (ELROD) with some of William's other siblings, James, age 26?, Saphrona, age 21 and Barbara C. Elrod, age 14. I noticed all the women had the occupation of seamstress on this census. I wonder what was in Massac that employed so many seamstresses? I did find a marriage record for WILLIAM COLLINS in Massac County September 22, 1853. His wife's name was HANNAH DYE. In the 1850 census for McCracken County Kentucky, Hannah Dye is a neighbor to William Collins. I have been unable to establish who William's father is since his father died in the 1830's. I also cannot find any of this COLLINS family after 1860 census. I would like to know what happened to all these people after 1860? Where did they migrate to next? Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated and I am willing to share any info that I have. Jo Pace, Denver, Colorado JoPace46@comcast.net Scanned by Norton Antivirus Firewall by Zone Alarm Pro 4

    3. My friends - Today's post takes us back to McCracken County and our review of the Vital Statistics marriage records for the period 1852-1869, with some scattered items in the 1874-1878, 1893-1894 and 1903-1904 time frames. Please bear in mind that, especially in the 1850's and 1870's, these early VS records are woefully incomplete and inaccurate. Only about 40%-50% of the actual births, marriages and deaths that occurred in those years ever made their way into the VS records. Subscribers to the JP and McCracken list can obtain the expanded information on a marriage in the listing below by sending a request to me. The detailed information usually contains the date of marriage, ages of groom and bride and where each was born. In some cases, the location within McCracken County where the marriage occurred is also present.
