Samuel and Nancy Watson Strode were my paternal grandmother's great-grandparents. Samuel Strode served as a sergeant in the Virginia Militia in the American Revolution under General George Rogers Clark. Samuel first came to what is now Mason County, Kentucky in 1775-6. After the Revolution he received a large land grant on both sides of the North Fork of the Licking River in present-day Mason and Fleming Counties. He and Nancy resided near Lewisburg, Mason County, Kentucky on what is now "Strode's Run Road". Their bodies are buried on the old Fred Adams III farm on Strode's Run. The more famous "Strode's Station", in Clark County, Kentucky was established by Samuel's cousin, John Strode. Samuel and Nancy Strode's daughter, Ann, born 1814, married John Hopper, a settler from Virginia. I do not know the names of all their children, but three of their sons were Morgan B(ryan), Francis, and Lewis Hopper. Morgan Bryan Hopper was my great-grandfather. He served as a sergeant in the Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (USA), while most of his Strode cousins volunteered for the Southern Confederacy. He, like his uncle, Morgan Bryan Strode, was named in honor of Samuel Strode's uncle (by marriage), Morgan Bryan, Rebecca Bryan Boone's father, hence Daniel Boone's father-in-law. My grandmother, Daisy Hopper Hawkins, was the daughter of Morgan Bryan and Martha Hixson Hopper. I hope you find this information helpful in filling in some of the blanks. Sincerely, Ben Hawkins rdlwcl@alltel.net wrote: Hi Tina, Am wondering how far up you have researched your Strode family. My father married Anna Elizabeth Strode March 16, 1927 in Maysville, Mason Co. They divorced about 3 years later, have not gotten to search in Maysville for the divorce. The big surprise here was that Elizabeth was pregant at the time of the seperation and did not know it or did not tell my father. We learned of the child when she was 21 and came to our house to find her dad. I was in the first grade and it was Christmas time. I remember it so well this many years later. Elizabeth named her daughter Elizabeth and she went by Betty when we met her. That is the only time I ever saw Betty but have often wondered about her. A few years ago I asked another half sister (my mother's child by her first husband) if she knew anything about Betty and she said yes that she and my dad had visited her several times over the years in Cincinnati Ohio. She could not remember Betty's married name. Elizabeth's parents were Frank M. (Aug 1874-March 19, 1960) and Ella P. Warder (Aug. 1879-May 18, 1969) Strode. Both were born in Kentucky, both died in Fleming Co. Kentucky. If you or anyone else on the list know any more about Elizabeth (Betty), Elizabeth or her parents, please write me back at rdlwcl@alltel.net Thank you so much, Carol Lovitt ----- Original Message ----- From: "TINA REED" To: Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 3:46 PM Subject: [KYMASON-L] Samuel and Nancy(Watson)STRODE/STROUD > > Hi List, > I am a descendant of Samuel and Nancy(Watson)STRODE. > Samuel b. 1754 d.1842 Mason Co. Thank you Ben for answering our post on Samuel and Nancy (Watson) Strode. This is all good information and will fill in some gaps. I had found Anna and John Hopper's marriage and so far the 1850 census for them. Their first child listed on the 1850 was born 10 years after their marriage so I know I don't have all of their children either. Tina and 2 other ladies and I have been e-mailing off the list for days now so if you want to join in on our e-mails please write me back at rdlwcl@alltel.net We have been doing this so as not to over flow the list.
