Surnames: GATES, HARMON, PORTER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WBB.2ACI/3018 Message Board Post: My grandmother is Myrtle Douglas Gates. According to the birth certificate of her daughter Genevieve she was born in 1914 and also according to the 1910 Census. Myrtle(Myrtie) had two brothers and one sister. Cahen (b. @1913), Clarence (b.1919) and Mary (b. 1926). Myrtle's parents were Bassett Gates and Mittie L Unknown. Bassett was born in 1879 according to the 1880 Census. Bassett's parents are/were Joseph C Gates and Mary Conely. I have Joseph being born in Aberdeen, Ohio (b. 1856) and Mary being born 1849 in Ireland. Joseph and Mary were married on April 1, 1875 in Maysville, Kentucky. Does anyone have any information on this family? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help

    3. I may some answers for you, but I need to look at the rest of my GATES information. My Gates lived in Adams and Brown County. William Gates fought in the Rev. War and settled in Adams Co. about 1817. The connection to your Gates is just a theory, but I am going to work on it. I just looked at the 1880 census for your Joseph Gates. His father was born in Maryland according to it. In addition to Basset, there is a son named Anson and I do know that my William had a grandson named Anson. My Anson's father was also a William. The younger William was born in Maryland and married a Cyntha (born in Ohio). They lived in Adams County near Aberdeen. William's brother, Allen, did live in Aberdeen. William died in 1859. The 1860 census (Union Township, Brown County) lists his widow, Cyntha, living with the Ephraim Flaugher family. Her children are listed as G W (who I think is a George) age 13, and a Josias age 8. Her son, Anson, is listed as living with another family in another township in Brown County (I can't remember off hand which township). IDEA#1 - Is your Joseph my Josias? Would my Anson have been your Joseph's brother and therefore named his son after his brother? IDEA #2 - The 1920 census with Basset's family there is a son Allen listed. My William had a son Allen so there is another family name that may or not be coincidence. These are just ideas, but something to look into. This is strange as I tried for a long time to find more on my oldest William and struck out. I started back on him the other day and found a will and some baptism records for some of his grandchildren. Now your email gives me something else. If the connection proves to be true, I have pension records for the first William and other information that I can share. I am actually descended through William's daughter, Mary. 3. Lynn, Thank you so much. I have been trying to find information on the gates for a long time and have not been very successful. I finally found some information when some kind soul sent me a census record. And when she did that I found Joseph and Bassett. I did a search on the Kentucky Death Records the other day and the only Joseph C that I found died in 1930 in Boyle County, Kentucky but the dates don't match with the birth I have, but the birth could be wrong to as I took the birth from the Census records. I am sending for the death certificate anyway because it will possibly help. You have been a great help. I had no idea anyone else was researching the Gates family at all. And, if I can be of any assistance to you please do not hesitate to send me an email. Again thank you so much for your help.
