Could someone tell me if there is a Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church in Mason County that would have records of parishioners dating back to the 1800s? I am interested in my relatives, Daniel Worsham Osborne and John Watkins Osborne. Thank you. Larry
There are at least 3 Disciples of Christ congregations in Mason County, most likely more. The largest is First Christian Church, 606-564-5568, 18 East Third Street, Maysville, KY 41056 - C. Wayne Barnett, Pastor. Also Mill Creek Christian Church, 606-742-2259, 6861 Ky Hwy 11, May's Lick, KY 41055, and May's Lick Christian Church, 606-763-6203, 5083 Main Street, May's Lick, KY 41055. By the way, Walter Scott, one of the men credited with co-founding the Disciples of Christ (along with Alexander and Thomas Campbell, and Barton Stone), is buried at May's Lick. My late mother was a communicant at First Christian Church for many years after coming to Maysville (she was baptized at North Middletown Christian Church in Bourbon County), until turning to Catholicism shortly before she died. St Patrick's Catholic, Nativity Episcopal, and First Christian are in close proximity to one another and have worked cooperatively for many years on projects such as Bible School, etc., so the! re's been a pretty high degree of intermarriage and conversions between them. Many of my paternal grandmother's relatives were Disciples, too, especially Hoppers and Hixsons, although she was a Methodist. If you're ever in Bourbon County, Kentucky, be sure and stop by the Cane Ridge Shrine. It's a must for anyone interested in the history of the Disciples of Christ. Cane Ridge is considered the birthplace of the denomination. I have a copy of a book printed in 1948 "A History of the Christian Church - Maysville, Ky" by Gayle Anderson Braden and Coralie Jones Runyon. There are a couple of Osbornes mentioned in it, but not the two Osbornes that you mention. I haven't ended up using this book too much as the families I've been researching ended up having attended different churches.
