    3. Dear Les : For over 100 years, Mason County's leading florist was "C. P. Dieterich & Bro." The business began in 1965, and closed in the early 1970s, after C(arl) Perry Dieterich passed away. I believe that he was the third generation to operate the business. "Dieterich's" was not only a florist, but operated their own greenhouses and nurseries. His widow and children moved to Lexington following his death, and I think several of them worked for Hillenmeyer Nurseries, there, for a while. The eldest son, Carl Perry Dieterich Jr., was a career Army Reservist, I believe, but I don't know what he's doing, now. I'm not sure what happened to son, Charles Philip Dieterich, but I think son, William Dieterich II may still be involved in some kind of floral or nursery-related career in the Lexington/Nicholasville area. He and I went to school together as children. There were two or more daughters as well, but the only one whose name I remember is Johanna, who is a year younger than ! I. As far as I know, the reason for the business name of "C. P. Dieterich & Bro." was a family tradition of each generation giving 2 sons names with the initials, "C. P." (see above). I think the elder Mr. Dieterich belonged to Maysville's First Christian Church, while Mrs. Dieterich, an O'Neill, was a parishioner at Maysville 's St. Patrick's Church. I seem to remember Mr. Dieterich being active in the Ringgold Lodge I.O.O.F. (OddFellows), which owned the building where the florist shoppe was located. The greenhouses and nursery were located in the East End of Maysville, abutting the Cemetery and the railroad. Please note the family's spelling of their name, with the second "e", "Dieterich", as opposed to the much more prevalent "Dietrich". Not sure, but the Dieterichs, like the Hillenmeyers, may have been of Alsatian-French origin rather than German, hence the unusual spelling. Hope this is helpful, but, if not, I enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce.
