    3. Amy\\John : There is a road in Mason County, KY named Cahill Pike. Perhaps this may have been named for John Cahill. Hopefully, someone with more information can verify this one way or another. Although I do not know anything about John Cahill's parentage, I can tell you that the surname, Cahill, is of Irish origin. This isn't much to go on, but I hope this may be of some little help to you. Married Eleanor Butts in Cuplpepper, VA in 1795 and died 10-31-1812 in Mason, Co, KY in 1812. He was a mounted volunteer for KY in 1812 and mustered out of St. Marys (OH I presume). All I can find is that he served about a month with the Volunteers commanded by Capt. Charles Ward in the regiment commanded by Col. Richard M. Johnson. He enlisted in August for only a 1 month term. He died in October of the same year, 1812. This info I found in a copy of an application for bounty land in Franklin, Co. MO in 1851 signed by Eleanor. In this application, she had to state when her husband served and his death year. What I would really like to find is: John's cause of death, burial place and his parentage. I am most willing to pay someone for time and postage. 3. Thank you Ben. I did know of the Irish heritage. I have not connected anyone with Ireland....yet. This John Cahill could well have been born in Ireland, I don't know. However, my gut tells me that it was his parents that were from Ireland (if anyone in my family was).. His wife, Eleanor, I think I read somewhere (and then lost it) had parents that were from Ireland. Her father was William and her mother was Eleanor. And...I forgot to mention, John CAhill was listed as John COhill on the marriage register in Culpepper, VA Thanks, AMY ben hawkins wrote: > > There is a road in Mason County, KY named Cahill Pike. 3. Amy, Do you happen to know John Cahill's wife's parents' surname? My gut feeling is that you are correct, John Cahill's parents may have been born in Ireland; and if he was, he probably emigrated from Ireland to Virginia with them when he was a small child. My early Virginia Irish ancestors included Butlers and Nickells(Nicholl, Nichol, Nickle, MacNiochaill, etc.) The Nickells, from Lower Bedoney, County Tyrone, settled in Augusta County, VA, which had a predominently Irish community . Also, Simon Kenton, the locally famous pioneer generally credited with founding the Mason County, Ky settlement was the son of Irish immigrants. Mary Ingles, also well-known in eastern Ky history, was Irish, too, her maiden name being Draper. Also, Fleming County, which was formed from part of Mason county, was founded by the half-brothers, George Stockton and John Fleming, whose parents were from Ireland. Anyway, the whole point of this is that a large number of the early Mason County (and ! its offspring) settlers were first and second generation Irish-Americans, and this is sometimes reflected in local geographical names.
