Hello, I am searching for the parents of Lydia Smith, that m. in 1827 to Zedekiah Wood in Clermont Co. Ohio. Clermont is right across the Ohio River from Mason County. Thanks, Carolyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marian M." <MarianMM@cfl.rr.com> To: <KYMASON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 16, 2005 11:30 AM Subject: [KYMASON-L] Hezekiah Smith My DAR ancestor, Hezekiah Smith, was born in Delaware 18 April 1763 and died 26 August 1824 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Continental army at Granby MA in Col. Marshall's Regiment--4th Hampshire, and, as a private, was in nine battles. His eldest brother, Daniel, was killed in the Revolutionary War. His brother Simeon was also in the Revolutionary War and also served in the War of 1812. My Hezekiah Smith (there were several who fought in the Revolutionary War) married Mary Ann Rector, who was "raised by her uncle, Presley Neville" near Pittsburgh, after the death of her mother. This fact is, however, in dispute since her Rector family also has ties in Kentucky--which I will pursue later. Following the war, Hezekiah Smith did surveying along the Ohio River. After Hezekiah Smith and Mary Ann Rector married, they moved "to Mason County, Kentucky, near May's Lick, Bluelicks, Nicholas County, Kentucky, on a farm on Indian Creek." (This combination of counties is confusing to me.) In 1820, they sold the farm in Kentucky and moved to Marion County, Indiana and settled in the woods on 27 October 1820 where they became one of the earliest pioneers to settle in Marion County, Indiana. (As a result, I am a member of the Society of Indiana Pioneers.) Nowhere have I been able to discover information about Hezekiah Smith's family. (The National Archives has no record; New England Genealogical & Historical Society could find no record; Massachusetts and Delaware forums could find no information.) In the Latah County, Idaho, in a bio of his grandson, Marques L. Smith, "His grandfather, Hezekiah Smith, fought under George Washington, for six years in the Revolutionary War. The great-grandfather," (also named) "Hezekiah Smith, was murdered by Tories and Indiana while his son, Hezekiah, was fighting for the independence of the colonies." Several Hezekiah and Mary Ann's children were born in Mason County, Kentucky, including my great-great grandfather, Daniel Rector Smith. Can anyone assist me in finding what information might be gleaned from Kentucky records about my ancestor? Otherwise, he remains my family's brick wall in tracing our Smith ancestry. Marian P.S. Sorry about the length of this inquiry but I am trying to get all of my information into one request...

I do see some parallels between your Hezekiah and one I found in a will for Champaign County, OH. There is a will for a Peter Smith who died in Champaign County, OH in 1817. Some one in this will may have been the benefactor for my ancestor Reuben Corder who m. Matilda Shockey in ChampCo in 1839. Peter S's wife was Catherine, son - Ira.. His other heirs were Samuel, Sarah, Hezekiah Smith, heirs of Elizabeth Faris, heirs of Nancy Johns, Abraham, Polly and Rhoda Smith. Another researcher just pointed out that Indian Creek runs just north of Cynthiana, KY. A John Corder was living nearby as early as 1820. His dau Cathrine m. a Mahoney (probably related to his wife Elizabeth Mahoney). An Austin Mahoney lived near them in Shenandoah County, VA. He m. a Smith. John and Elizabeth's son Thomas m. Sarah Lemon, dau of John Lemmon in Cynthiana. A John Lemon worked at Isabella Furnace in ShenCo, VA. A Peter Smith was living in Harrison and Henry Cos. in 1810. The Maho(r)neys moved to Henry Co. A James Criswell was in Harrison and a Robert Criswell was in Henry Co., VA. James Corder m. Rhoda Criswell in Shenandoah County, VA in 1801. Criswells have been in Washington Co., PA since 1790. 1850 Census for Amwell Twp. Washington Co., PA page 383 hh 229 James Reese 50 PA Rachel do 48 PA Robert Wilson 26 PA Lucinda do 23 PA Hh 230 James Corder 25 OH Phoebe Smith 52 PA Elizabeth do 16 Wm do 18 Sarah Reese 16 Many people migrated from Mason Co., KY to Champaign County, OH. There was also a migration from ChampCo OH to Grant and Marion Cos., IN. My gr-gr grandmother's parents were Abraham and Nancy (Rector) Shockey. They m. in Maysville, Mason Co. KY in 1801. Nancy's father Chas Rector migrated to Miami Co. IN. If you are interested, I'll send more. Smith is so hard to follow, I usually leave this surname alone. Nancy Halvorson
Clermont County is NOT right across the river from Mason County. Mason County KY borders only Brown and Adams Counties in Ohio. Clermont County is across the Ohio River from Bracken, Pendleton, and Campbell Counties in KY.
