The Watkins family was very prominent and well-to-do in Maysville, owning significant and well-located commercial properties downtown. To the best of my knowledge, the last surviving member of the family was Amelia Watkins Lane, who died over 20 years ago. Although she had some distant cousins in New York, being childless, as was her late brother, William C. Watkins, she left the bulk of her estate to the local Knights of Columbus, St. Patrick's School, and the Diocese of Covington. There are, or were, some family pictures of the Watkins family hanging upstairs at Knights of Columbus Council #1377 in Maysville (the Watkins family home), as well as some pictures of William Watkins in storage at Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1564, also in Maysville. He was a longtime officer there, and I think Bill and Amelia's father was a charter member when the Aerie was formed in 1907, in which case his name is on the charter, which I think hangs in the Aerie meeting room. I hope t! his is helpful. "R.W. Shore" <bob@chimneystones.us> wrote:I have a link to Mason Co through the marriage of WATKINS Charles and LITTLEJOHN Jane on 30-Oct-1821. Yes John died in Bath County Kentucky after 1930, because he is in the census for that year. He would have been in his 70's. But Laura was a previous wife before he married my great grandma Bell Moore. I am new at this and I am learning a few ways to try and get info on my ancestors!! I do know that John and Laura had a son named Noah b. abt. 1883, in a place called Pete in Bracken Co. KY. I really appreciate your help. Thanks so much!! Wilma
Hi R.W., The Mason County Museum keeps surname files and updates them periodically. You might want to contact them and ask them for copies of the material they have in the WATKINS and LITTLEJOHN files. http://www.masoncountymuseum.org/articles/home.asp Kathy in MN "R.W. There are only three Graham families: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymason/data.html Did John & Laura (Graham) Parks die in KY? Thanks, Kathy. I will research this information. Looks like there sure are/were a lot of Hezekiahs, and a lot of Smiths. Marian

Nathan, do you know of other Stewarts with Joseph in 1790? I have a William Stewart who married Catherine Poisal, likely around Martinsburg WV, about that time. Their son William N. Stewart was apprenticed in Mayslick, Mason, Ky in 1801. Martinsburg in nearly in PA, so they definitely could have come down the river. Thanks for any help you can provide. Any idea who Joseph's parents were or where they came from? Bob Stewart >>Dear Jim: I have been following your emails on the Gray family with interest. The Grays and the Stewart family of Brown, Adam and Mason counties were related through early marriage. Matthew Gray and Joseph Stewart are contemporaries. I believed the Grays and Stewarts knew each other before they arrived at Limestone...probably in Pennsylvania. I believe Joseph Stewart was in the Tenmile Country, possibly at Morgan Township, Washington County (at that time) at least by 1784. Our family history says the Stewarts joined four other families and journeyed by keel boat from Braddock, Pa. to Limestone in the Spring of 1790. I have wondered if the Grays were one of those families. Joseph Stewart's daughter, Mary Stewart married John Gray in Mason County in 1797. Their first child and son was named Joseph Stewart Gray. That family tradition of daughters using the Stewart name as a middle name for one of their children still holds today. My name is Nathan Stewart Brown. I look forward to hearing from you, Stewart
Could someone please direct me to the proper place to possibly locate marriage information for Hezekiah Smith and Mary Ann Rector, which marriage date was 08 October 1881? They moved into Eastern Kentucky, to Nichols or Mason County, and owned a farm there. All of their children were born in Kentucky prior to their selling the farm and moving to Marion County, Indiana. Sorry...NOT directly related. Joseph and William are not related as far as I know.
Dear Bob I don't think William and Joseph are directly related...though I may be wrong. I find no mention of other Stewarts traveling with Joseph. That area around the borders of WV, PA and VA were full of Stewarts about this time. I have seen mentions of William Stewart in the Tenmile Country...and I believe that your William Stewart was in the Mason County very early. I have seen the grave stone of a William Stewart in the Maysville cemetery. It is tough following a common Scottish surname such as Stewart, and they didn't make it any easier with given names such as William, Joseph, John or James. Stewart

Looking for any Information on Matthew Gray who was born in Pa about 1747. Died about 22-DEC-1836 in or around Mills Creek in Mason County, KY. Married Ann Nancy born about 1750 in Penn? Died about 28-Jan-1852 ? Thanks for your help. Jim

There have been Edgingtons in Mason County for as far back as I can remember. I went to school with Julie and Cindy Edgington at Maysville First District Elementary School (long since defunct). I think Julie would be about 48, now, and Cindy about 45. I believe Cindy still lives in the Maysville, KY/Aberdeen, OH area. Their father, "Popeye" Edgington occasionally worked for my Dad, who was in the taxicab business. Also I remember a Captain Edgington, a retired river tug pilot. My Dad was born in 1907, and Capt. Edgington seemed ancient compared to him, probably 20-30 years older, I'd say born about 1880 or so. Seems to me there was a feature article in the Maysville newspaper about him, probably in the late 1960s or early 70s. Anyone out there remember? edge0504@yahoo.com wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
