Well, the names mentioned in the 1860 and 1870 censi sure seem to match up pretty well with the info in the original query. Not exact, but close considering language differences/translations, and the way details get altered over time. The census data seems to confirm the connections beteen Alsace and Bavaria. The next time there is a Gallenstein family reunion in and around Maysville, one might be able to get some more details there (the DeFosses are related). Bear in mind also that throughout history, Alsace has been part of France, Germany, and the old Holy Roman (German) Empire. The Hillenmeyer family of nursery fame in Ohio/Kentucky is an example of a very Germanic sounding name, but descended from Frenchman, Louis Hillenmeyer. So, it's not surprising to find Germans with Gallic names and vice versa. Your Elizabeth is apparently a sister to Frances ( Fanny) Pepper Allen from whom I descend. According to information I have she was born abt 1752, m. John Elliot abt. 1775 and d. abt 1822. She is the daughter of Samuel Pepper and Elizabeth Holton. I have information and a copy of her will from Mason Co records if you will contact me Marion Jenkins Daly _Mdaly61503@aol.com_ (mailto:Mdaly61503@aol.com)

Dear Listers, We are looking for a woman by the name of either Elizabeth DE FOSSET or Elizabeth BURKHART, who died on 7 Nov 1910 in Maysville and she was buried on 9 Nov 1910 in Washington. Also, we do not know, if she was married or what her married name was. Where can we write for an obituary? Since we have her death date, maybe they can find her obit by looking for someone named Elizabeth, whose obit is in a newspaper near those dates. The 1910 Census for Mason County lists an Elizabeth HIEL living with a Harry BURK family. She is listed as the mother-in-law and she was 60 years old at that time. Our Elizabeth was born about 1848 in Bavaria in Germany. Her parents were supposedly, Caspar DE FOSSET and his first wife, Elisabetha SIEFERT. Ye Olde Dutch Inn is still in business, albeit it has changed hands several times. It was probably owned by the late Bob McNutt in the era your interested in. A bar now for many years, it was originally a "Dutch Oil Company" gas station and garage. At the corner of 4th and Plum Streets, this was a major thoroughfare in the late 20s and early 30s, before Coughlin Blvd. and the Kehoe Viaduct was built. It was the original KY Highway 11 leading to Flemingsburg and points beyond. joycegish@aol.com wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Doug, You pondered why the number of children appear on tax list. In 1821 Ky law required tax list to indicate # children ages 4-14 1840 this changed to age 7-17 Perhaps changed further in 1840's Best I can figure out, this was probably to determine the need for schools in each area. Barb
