Good to hear from you. There must have been a reason for this migration. In my William White Sr's family 6 of his 8 children went to Mason Co KY before 1800. Must have been something to do with William's military service. Ginny K
"Kentucky was part of Virginia until 1776. Prior to this time, 1 Dec 1772 to 31 Dec 1776 the area was Fincastle Co. VA." "The three original counties of Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln were formed in 1780. Together they encompassed all of current day Kentucky." aken from Kentucky Ancestry by Roseanne Hogan. This book explains much of the changes and developments. Kentucky became a state in 1792 having 6 additional counties now. Along with the original three above there was Nelson, Woodford, Mason, Madison, Bourbon and Mercer. I am not sure how much I can quote legally but the next paragraph describes the boundaries better for Lincoln which covered most of the sourthern part of the state. excepting what is was taken for Madison Co. Jefferson was reduced by the creation of Nelson Co. Together with what today called the Jackson Purchase ( Chickasaw Indian Hunting Grounds) it made up all the counties. All other counties sprung from with in these counties. Boundaries moved tremendously for some and minimal for others. The last boundary change was in 1912. 120 counties were created the last was McCreary Co. Fayettes area was split to form Mason, Bourbon and Woodford. It is also suggested you acquire or read Willaim Dollarhides Census Maps of Kentucky and Rones Historical Atlas of Kentucky and her counties Rone 1965.. I have not seen this second one but have used the first one. Mason Co. was formed from Bourbon Co. and 19 counties have been formed from Mason Co. . That ought to give you clue as to where to hunt. :>) Hope this helps some out there. SusiCP@aol.com
I was only guessing to you that it may have been part of Ohio Territory at that time. I should have taken the time to look it up before 'guessing wrong '. Sorry. First Census of KY 1790 published by Stevenson's Genealogical Center of Provo, Utah, originally published in 1940 and compiled by Charles B. Heinemann. This book has a large fold up map of Counties of KY in 1792 in respect to modern counties. References; Acts of Virginia Assembly, Kentucky Topography maps, and Kentucky Land Grants. Looking at map from right to left. entire right end of map is called Mason Co adjoining Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia. The county is laid out on the diagonal. Directly below Mason Co is Bourbon County from bottom ALMOST to top of county. At top of map adjoining top end of Mason and Bourbon Counties is Woodford Co. Directly below Woodford co is small Fayette Co and below Fayette Co is Madison Co going south on this map ALMOST to bottom of map Completely across BOTTOM of this map is Lincoln Co Adjoining Woodford Co on west side in Jefferson Co and squeezed in under Fayette and Jefferson on south end in Mercer County. Adjoining Bourbon Co from Fayette Co at top and Lincoln Co on west side is Madison Co Across middle top of Nelson County above Lincoln Co. *** There is a section called Jackson Purchase acquired in 1818 on Western end of KY. below Illinois and above TN. The Mississippi River seems to run along western end of the section called Jackson Purchase. ** If you find this difficult to follow, maybe jotting down as above typed will put the state in better prospective for 1792. There is a note on this map page stating; The PRESENT boundary between Washington and Mercer- and Marion and Boyle should lie on division line shown here referring to the section called Jackson Purchase above mentioned. ***************************************************** White surnames listed in this census of 1790; Andrew Lincoln 3/30/1790 Catherine Fayette 2/26/1790 Charles Madison 1789 Daniel Lincoln 3/25/1790 Elizabeth Jefferson 9/2/1789 George Lincoln 6/18/1790; Madison 1789 James listed 6 times Fayette 5/9/1789; Fayette 7/8/1789;Fayette 2/26/1790; Madison 1789; Nelson 11/8/1792; Woodford 5/22/1790; Jeremiah Fayette 1/11/1790 Joel listed 3 times Fayette 5/16/1789; Fayette 11/1789; Woodford 3/19/1790 John listed 4 times Fayette 1/11/1790; 1/11/1790; Lincoln 8/3/1790; Madison 1789; John Jr Madison 1789 John Sr. Fayette 1/11/1790 Stephen Bourbon 3/1791 Thomas Fayette 1/11/1790 William Fayette 5/9/1789 *** I wonder if those duplicate names above are mostly same men owning more tracts of land. I never heard of KY being part of the Ohio Territory. It was originally Kentucky Co., VA. http://www.kygenweb.net/counties/formation.html Mason County itself started out as Fayette County. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyclark/countymaps.htm Kathy -----Original Message----- From: Virginia L. Mason County lines were changed several times, I think, maybe people didn't move, just the county lines. Virginia L.
