Hello Everyone Can anyone tell me the name of the Catholic church that served Mayville in 1853 ? My folks were Irish. Has anyone seen a parish register ? Thanks. Most of them are from either Fleming County or Lewis County, both of which were originally part of Mason County. Also, a good many Rigdons have settled across the river in Adams and Brown Counties, Ohio. There are still a few Griffiths in the area, too. My father's great-aunt, Mary Hixson married Evan Griffith, and some of their descendants still live in Mason County, surnamed Beckett and Garey.

(Aberdeen), Brown Co., OH is directly across the Ohio River from Maysville, Mason Co., KY, and families have frequently moved back and forth from one to the other since the settlement of the area. However the Drake family is generally associated with May's Lick, Mason Co., KY, 12 miles southwest of Maysville, it being the hometown/childhood home of Dr. Daniel Drake, a prominent Cincinnati physician in the 19th century, for whom Cincy's Drake Hospital is named.

Maysville, Kentucky: I stayed the night in the Ramada Inn (good accommodations for the price, -$51 plus tax). Maysville Probate Court, next to the Sheriff’s office. Maysville has a Museum, which contains a genealogy research facility. It is open Mon.- Sat., 9-4 Brown County Court House in Georgetown, Ohio. We first went to the Georgetown, Brown County Court House. The genealogy records are not in the Old Court House, but are in a new building behind the Rent-to-Own store. However, they have no marriage bond records. They told us that years ago they gave them to the Mormons that were in the courthouse photographing old documents. We found a map of Brown County for $2.25 in the drug store across the street from the Old Court House. I think you can get one for free at the courthouse somewhere. We got a free map of Mason County, Kentucky from the Circuit Court Judges office in Mason County when we were there. After our research in the Brown County government records we went to the Brown County Public Library in Georgetown. We found very little helpful genealogy information there. To make matters worse, the staff was very rude and not helpful at all. This library is pretty much a waste of time. The Ripley Public Library is on the opposite end of the spectrum. We went there Saturday morning. Their library is beautiful and their staff goes out of their way to help. This library is full of genealogy information. It is in downtown Ripley, and open Mon-Sat. 10:00 to 4:00 (they may be open on Sundays too). This library also has all the old Ripley papers on microfiche that has more ads, etc. There is a very nice lady who is full of information and owns and operates the flower shop across from the Ripley Library. The Brown County Genealogy Society research and museum facility in downtown Georgetown, 200 West Grant Avenue, in (on the corner of Cherry and Apple Streets. It is located across the street from the Old Court House in the Old County Jail building. The door is on the side with the driveway. You can contact them by calling: Dorothy Henton (937) 444-3521, Ann Kenney (937) 378- 2582, or Lvera Sipelt (937) 378-6413. The lady minding the genealogy society’s library was helpful. Go to the Ripley Museum. They are extremely helpful. They also have a newsletter that they put out called "The Lantern". Their address is Ripley Heritage, Inc., PO Box 176, Ripley Ohio, 45167, phone (937) 392-4660, web site: www.ripleymuseum.org. I plan to visit northern Kentucky and southern Ohio to try to get some insight on the parents and siblings of David Acklin, born Campbell County, 1792, married to Martha Maxwell, born Oct 27, 1795, married on Nov 11, 1817 in Campbell County, KY. At some point, for some reason, they (or their children) moved to Aberdeen, Ohio. Where should I start the investigation and where are the most promising locations? Thanks Jim Acklin (240) 683-1340 (301) 642-6870 (c) acklinj@aol.com

James, Is it possible that some of your Moore's may have wound up in Carroll County, IN? I realize that it may be a bit of a reach, but it might explain some things in one of my family lines. My Jones line 4th g-grandparents spent some time in Maysville, KY, probably about 1800. Some of them wound up in Carroll County, IN in the 1820's or 1830's where they married into the Moore's. My 3rd g-grand aunt married an Eli Moore there. May be nothing to it, but I thought I'd run it past you.
