Nice to talk to you. You're descended from Mahala Pollard Strode. What a nice coincidence! My daughter's name is Mahala. She was named for my Dad's paternal great-aunt, Mahala Hawkins Shields, who wasn't related to Samuel Strode. Later we discovered that my wife's great-great grandmother was named Mahala Nickell Blanton. My great-great grandmother was Martha Nickell Hawkins, Mahala Shields' mother. So, there's a possibility that these two great-great grandmothers may have been cousins, and that Martha named her daughter after her cousin, Mahala. Thus far, that's speculation, but we do know that those two Nickell girls were related to some degree, both being descended from John Nickell, who immigrated to Augusta Co., Virginia from County Tyrone, Ireland in the 1720s/30s. Everyone comments on my daughter's pretty and "unusual" name. I explain that it's a family name on both sides, and that "Mahala" was a very popular name for little girls in Kentucky in the early-to-mid 19th century. Thank you Ben for answering our post on Samuel and Nancy (Watson) Strode. This is all good information and will fill in some gaps. I had found Anna and John Hopper's marriage and so far the 1850 census for them. Their first child listed on the 1850 was born 10 years after their marriage so I know I don't have all of their children either. The big surprise here was that Elizabeth was pregant at the time of the seperation and did not know it or did not tell my father. We learned of the child when she was 21 and came to our house to find her dad. I was in the first grade and it was Christmas time. I remember it so well this many years later. Elizabeth named her daughter Elizabeth and she went by Betty when we met her. That is the only time I ever saw Betty but have often wondered about her. A few years ago I asked another half sister (my mother's child by her first husband) if she knew anything about Betty and she said yes that she and my dad had visited her several times over the years in Cincinnati Ohio. She could not remember Betty's married name. Elizabeth's parents were Frank M. (Aug 1874-March 19, 1960) and Ella P. Warder (Aug. 1879-May 18, 1969) Strode. Once again I am posting to see if anyone might have this lady in their files. Harriet HOSKINS, bn 20 Aug 1810 in Kentucky died 11 Sep 1891 in Sullivan County MO. By 1834 she was married to Hilery PICKERAL/PICKEREL/PICKRILL, bn 14 Jun 1811 in Mason Co KY died 23 Apr 1890 in Sullivan County MO. If we follow a traditional naming pattern, it is possible that her father was a William. Their first son was named Richard, which I believe is after Hilery's father.

Hi Carol, I have just been doing census on my Elizabeth's Strode line. Her father was Franklin, his father was Gilbert and Gilbert's father was Morgan B. These were all in Mason Co. As for my line going into Fleming Co. the first one that I can find there is Franklin but he was born and raised in Mason. Hi Carol, Another cousin of Tina's here also researching out Strode roots. We're gone back to Warinus de la Strode who went to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. I just recently learned that the Strode name came from the land he was granted by William after he became King William I of England. Of course, the Normans who invaded England spoke French which became the offical language of the land for some two hundred years after the invasion, and the "de la" is "of the" in French. So I guess that means Warinus was "Warius of the Strode", or some such. I would love to make the connection to the group that ended up in Fleming Co., KY. Our Samuel was in Mason Co., but I've found evidence that at least on of the children was in Fleming Co. How is the Fleming County line connected? Carol
Hi Tina, Am wondering how far up you have researched your Strode family. My father married Anna Elizabeth Strode March 16, 1927 in Maysville, Mason Co. They divorced about 3 years later, have not gotten to search in Maysville for the divorce. Both were born in Kentucky, both died in Fleming Co. Kentucky. If you or anyone else on the list know any more about Elizabeth (Betty), Elizabeth or her parents, please write me back at rdlwcl@alltel.net Thank you so much, Carol Lovitt ----- Original Message ----- From: "TINA REED" <chops57@hotmail.com> To: <KYMASON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 3:46 PM Subject: [KYMASON-L] Samuel and Nancy(Watson)STRODE/STROUD > > Hi List, > I am a descendant of Samuel and Nancy(Watson)STRODE. > Samuel b. 1754 d.1842 Mason Co. I may some answers for you, but I need to look at the rest of my GATES information. My Gates lived in Adams and Brown County. William Gates fought in the Rev. War and settled in Adams Co. about 1817. The connection to your Gates is just a theory, but I am going to work on it. I just looked at the 1880 census for your Joseph Gates. His father was born in Maryland according to it. In addition to Basset, there is a son named Anson and I do know that my William had a grandson named Anson. My Anson's father was also a William. The younger William was born in Maryland and married a Cyntha (born in Ohio). They lived in Adams County near Aberdeen. William's brother, Allen, did live in Aberdeen. William died in 1859. The 1860 census (Union Township, Brown County) lists his widow, Cyntha, living with the Ephraim Flaugher family. Her children are listed as G W (who I think is a George) age 13, and a Josias age 8. Her son, Anson, is listed as living with another family in another township in Brown County (I can't remember off hand which township). IDEA#1 - Is your Joseph my Josias? Would my Anson have been your Joseph's brother and therefore named his son after his brother? IDEA #2 - The 1920 census with Basset's family there is a son Allen listed. My William had a son Allen so there is another family name that may or not be coincidence. These are just ideas, but something to look into. This is strange as I tried for a long time to find more on my oldest William and struck out. I started back on him the other day and found a will and some baptism records for some of his grandchildren. Now your email gives me something else. If the connection proves to be true, I have pension records for the first William and other information that I can share. I am actually descended through William's daughter, Mary. Lynn, Thank you so much. I have been trying to find information on the gates for a long time and have not been very successful. I finally found some information when some kind soul sent me a census record. And when she did that I found Joseph and Bassett. I did a search on the Kentucky Death Records the other day and the only Joseph C that I found died in 1930 in Boyle County, Kentucky but the dates don't match with the birth I have, but the birth could be wrong to as I took the birth from the Census records. I am sending for the death certificate anyway because it will possibly help. You have been a great help. I had no idea anyone else was researching the Gates family at all. And, if I can be of any assistance to you please do not hesitate to send me an email. Again thank you so much for your help.
