I have posted before, but since this board seems to be so active this month, I am trying again. The 1880 census shows my gggrandfather, John Frank Donovan, was born in 1826 in Mason Co., KY. I can find absolutely nothing more in KY about him. If anyone has anything about Donovans in KY, I surely would appreciate the info. Thanks, Jeannie

Good morning John and Carolyn: Two things to keep in mind when searching for the burial sites of your Civil War dead: (1) Only Union soldiers are typically buried in national cemeteries. Some southern towns did perform burials of Confederate soldiers, usually just within the local public, church, and/or farm cemeteries but (rarely) in a cemetery that the locality specified for Confederate soldiers. (2) Kentucky is a Commonwealth, so counties there are very small -- so your relatives, either Union or Confederate, may be buried in an adjacent county. Good Luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dick Watters" <r.watters@att.net> To: <kymason@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 14, 2006 8:27 PM Subject: Re: [KYMASON] Maysville & Mason Co. cemetery "New Part" A-G only > John & Carolyn, > Paintsville is in Johnson County in Eastern Kentucky. > > Dick > > John & Carolyn Carson wrote: >> I had two gr-uncles who died in the Civil War at Paintsville,KY, Milton >> Flint and Luke Flint. Is anyone researching the Flahertys and Davis families in Mason County ? James Flaherty and Agnes Davis married in Mason Cty in 1852. I could not find them on the 1860 census so they may have moved. Thanks for all replies. Sue in Tampa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

All I know is that in approximately 1852 Patrick Sheridan, born in Ireland in 1828 married Margaret May McVay who was born near Washington, in Mason County, Oct. 2, 1831. Her parents were George McVay and Elizabeth Spencer, both born in Pennsylvania. Patrick Sheridan and Margaret May McVay had children in Kentucky between 1850-1862 and by 1865 they had moved to Ohio and had chidren there. I'm trying to find out where the Spencers and McVays came from. Thanks very much, Pat

Several of Wm's children are buried at Mt Carmel. I thought that's where he was buried too, however, I have a transcription of the cemetery, published by the Lewis Co, Hist Soc, and William is not listed. I also check Mt Gilead and he is not listed on that one either. Sorry!

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WBB.2ACI/906.2 Message Board Post: John, William was married twice. His first wife was Mary "Dolly" Asbury. Their marriage record was filed in Adams Co, OH, (from: Some Marriage Records of Adams County OHIO 1797-1894, published by the Adams Co, OH Genealogical Soc. in 1988). After her death, William married Frances Thomas in Fleming Co, KY, (from: Marriage Bonds of Fleming Co, KY 1798-1825 by Gareth L. Mark). Frances' father's name is given as James in the book. The clerk's office in both counties should be able to furnish you with copies of these records. I have a transcription of a letter written in 1909 by Laura Goodman McElvee of Sigourney, IA. She was a granddaughter of John Wallingford, son of Nicholas. She was born in 1833. In the letter she named all of the children of Nicholas. The children, as she named them, are: William, James, Marcus, John, Hiram, Lewis, Thomas, Prudance, Sara, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, Julia and Sophronia. She also stated she knew all of them but Sophronia. The children by Nicholas' second marriage are named in his will, as well as James, John and Mark. Laura would have been about 32 or 33 when William died. I'd say her identification of William as a son of NIcholas, is probably correct. I also have a transcription of William's Family Bible that lists both wives, however, I'm not sure how true of a transcription it is. I located the transcription in the Wallingford family files at the Mason Museum in Maysville, KY. I have never found any proof that Alice's maiden name was Hayes. William's brother, Mark, died in 1858 in Lewis Co and his death record does identify his mother as being named Alice, however, her maiden name was not given. Nicholas & Alice were most likely married in Berkely Co, VA (now WV). Unfortunately, that county's early marriage bonds are missing.
