    3. My DAR ancestor, Hezekiah Smith, was born in Delaware 18 April 1763 and died 26 August 1824 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Continental army at Granby MA in Col. Marshall's Regiment--4th Hampshire, and, as a private, was in nine battles. His eldest brother, Daniel, was killed in the Revolutionary War. His brother Simeon was also in the Revolutionary War and also served in the War of 1812. My Hezekiah Smith (there were several who fought in the Revolutionary War) married Mary Ann Rector, who was "raised by her uncle, Presley Neville" near Pittsburgh, after the death of her mother. This fact is, however, in dispute since her Rector family also has ties in Kentucky--which I will pursue later. Following the war, Hezekiah Smith did surveying along the Ohio River. After Hezekiah Smith and Mary Ann Rector married, they moved "to Mason County, Kentucky, near May's Lick, Bluelicks, Nicholas County, Kentucky, on a farm on Indian Creek." (This combination of counties is confusing to me.) In 1820, they sold the farm in Kentucky and moved to Marion County, Indiana and settled in the woods on 27 October 1820 where they became one of the earliest pioneers to settle in Marion County, Indiana. (As a result, I am a member of the Society of Indiana Pioneers.) Nowhere have I been able to discover information about Hezekiah Smith's family. (The National Archives has no record; New England Genealogical & Historical Society could find no record; Massachusetts and Delaware forums could find no information.) In the Latah County, Idaho, in a bio of his grandson, Marques L. Smith, "His grandfather, Hezekiah Smith, fought under George Washington, for six years in the Revolutionary War. The great-grandfather," (also named) "Hezekiah Smith, was murdered by Tories and Indiana while his son, Hezekiah, was fighting for the independence of the colonies." Several Hezekiah and Mary Ann's children were born in Mason County, Kentucky, including my great-great grandfather, Daniel Rector Smith. Can anyone assist me in finding what information might be gleaned from Kentucky records about my ancestor? Otherwise, he remains my family's brick wall in tracing our Smith ancestry. Marian P.S. Sorry about the length of this inquiry but I am trying to get all of my information into one request...

    3. I should have mention a mapping site that I like to use a lot. The USGS National Mapping Information site has a great query feature: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=116:1:17608539488834603008::NO::: Query for Indian Creek in Nicholas co., KY gives this result: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=116:3:17608539488834603008::NO::P3_FID:494935 Looks like Indian Creek runs just north of Cynthiana in Harrison county, as well as Nicholas county. You can click on the links in the "Mapping Services" in the box on the right and get different kinds of maps displayed. Then Nicholas was formed before they moved off to Indiana. I googled around a bit looking for "Indian Creek" Nicholas KY and came up with this site: http://www.shawhan.com/stations/hinkson.html It has some interesting research info on that creek. Maybe you want to take some research tips from that site and try finding the "Virginia Surveys and Grants" book. I know the government gave land to Rev. War soldiers after the war was over and maybe you'd find Hezekiah listed in that Virginia Surveys book. Kentucky was originally part of VA and it's a good idea to check Virginia records for info on early Kentuckians. Happy researching, Kathy

This is all very sketchy. William enlisted for the Rev War in Winchester, VA and served a year. He then married Grizzy Ann Bell from MA and he, Grizzy, John, and others lit out from what is now eastern WV to the now Maysville area of KY. Whether other family members came along or eventually followed no one knows. He and the others built a fort near Blanchard's Pond. Later on he and Corneilus Washburn crossed the Ohio R and built a log cabin at Logan's Gap, now Ripley, OH. The others eventually followed and he and Grizzy lived in what is now Adams/Brown County, Ohio until their deaths in the first third of the 18th Century. Grizzy 1 March 1825; William 10 January 1838. Their male children's names were John, Will Jr., Amos, Josiah, Thomas, James, and Harrison. Samuel is also listed as the last, but a debate exists whether he was a son! or a grandson. The daughters were Nancy (Hawk), Hannah (Robbins), and Elizabeth (Mann). Do any of these names ring a bell? Over the years the surname switched back and fortbetween Dixson and Dixon, finally settling on Dixon. George

I know they were in Mason Co. as early as 1816 because most of their 14 children were married there and James signed for the girls. James died in 1836 and Mary in 1826 in Mason Co.
